A report published today concludes that Irish will no longer be the primary language in any Gaeltacht community in ten years.

The research, commissioned by State agency Údarás na Gaeltachta, is based on census figures for 2006 and 2011.

The authors conclude that the social use of Irish in the Gaeltacht is declining at an even more rapid rate than predicted in their last report in 2007.

Very depressing news. Not all that surprised.

Conamara: Strongest Gaeltacht, much of it strong.
Tír Chonaill (Donegal): Parts of it strong
Corca Dhuibhne (West Kerry): Only most westerly part of it is strong.
Iorrais (Mayo): Weak enough, only Ceathrú Thaidhg is strong.
Rath Cairn (Meath): Reasonably strong, but well behind the big three.
An Rinn (Waterford): Only reasonable.
Múscraí (West Cork): Parts of it very weak, tiny part of it reasonable.
Uíbh Ráthach (South Kerry): Very weak. Shouldn't be a Gaeltacht.
Baile Ghib (Meath): Shouldn't be a Gaeltacht at all.

twohands!!!

What are the advantages of being granted Gaeltacht status?

Everything I've ever hear suggests it's a money thing(grants), but does anyone know what exactly the areas get out of this?

Wasn't every aware of the following places as Gaeltachts

QuoteRath Cairn (Meath): Reasonably strong, but well behind the big three.

If the percentage speaking or "claiming to speak" Irish in a certain area drops below a certain area is that a possibility of it losing it's status? On the other side of the coin can an area gain Gaeltacht status if there is a certain number speaking Irish there?

Was there some talk about a Gaeltacht being set up in Dublin somewhere at one stage?

Erris should be stripped of it's Gaeltacht status. But all the best to Cill tSéadhna regardlesd.

That's a bit harsh. Firstly Erris isn't a Gaeltacht. It was a Barony. Parts of Erris are considered Gaeltacht areas. Eachléim for example probably has twice as many Irish speakers as Ceathrú Thaidhg, should they all be 'stripped' of Gaeltacht status? Also Mayo has 2 other Gaeltacht areas outside Erris.

Anyone know if this is getting special "Gaeltacht" funds?

I remember reading Jack O'Connor's book and he had an account of a team from Kerry who had close to zero Irish taking part and the prime motivation seemed to be a weekend on the piss?

TourmKeady is one. Where is the other? Is it down by Leenane and Killary Harbor?

For anyone who hasn't been the Comortas is one of the great GAA weekends away.
