General discussion / Re: Irish on U.K. T.V.
August 14, 2010, 01:16:25 PM
This is a non thread. If you take a job in British television, or French or German or wherever then you use "we" to refer to the place where you are. Paddy O'Rourke refers to us winning a game although he doesn't even live in Armagh, Micko is not a Wicklow person but no doubt has used we to refer to Wicklow in the recent past.

QuoteCant be bothered going through 13 pages of thread.
....
What is the general gripe on?

So you want someone who has read the thread to tell you to save you the trouble.

The BBC do provide quite a bit of specific GAA coverage. However their general news coverage often gives the impression that the GAA is not of interest to the general population and their coverage of general GAA outside the 6 counties is extremely uneven, e.g. they might fail to mention a compromise Rules game while always mentioning a hockey international or the like.

QuoteI think Down will win this. Kerry are very shaky when they meet teams they are unfamiliar with.

More a case of Kerry being very shaky when they meet teams they don't rate. Down having something over Kerry raises them as a target.

Sligo just about beat Galway, so it is hard to justify them being 10 places ahead of Galway or Wexford.

We'll see at the weekend what teams are close to Cork, Tyrone and Kerry. Apart from those three there isn't a pile of difference between the rest of the Div 1 and Div 2 teams, just different motivation on the day.

QuoteHe organised a campaign against his employers from his work computer ffs. How thick is that?

About the same as a soccer fan purporting to be a GAA supporter.

QuoteWhat would a spin from Carrickmacross to Portlaoise be? 3 hours?

Not every that, 2:15 or so.

QuoteRe the Ulster final, people travelling home from a GAA match on the '11th night' isn't advisable. It would have to be 2 weeks earlier.

The Orange order should not have a say in the scheduling of GAA fixtures. Games continued all through the troubles and the 11th night is a meaningless concept in most of Ulster.

Another myth about to come to an end
"Down always beat Kerry in Championshp"

QuoteIf Mickey happened to find a way to beat Cork (and here will come the Tyrone bashing) - he'd have to go down as one of the very best in the game. He's found a way to beat most systems - except the one he used most successfully. Found a way to beat the intensity and strength of Armagh - and make sure Tyrone won the last 10 minutes, which no team had done against that 2002-2003 armagh side. Found a way to nullify the kerry threat and outscore them in a couple of fantastic games. I'd be pretty nervous facing Cork - but it'd be a hell of a way to win a fourth AIF.

True enough, Puck, it is a pity he didn't wait another year or two. If Tyrone do draw Cork and beat them and then beat Kerry then they will have set a marker for the new decade.

The Connacht final was a Shineing light in scoring terms.

Listening to Paddy Heaney on the RTE yesterday he suggested two things had happened. Armagh had lost top class players who were difficult to replace. For the other Ulster counties they had more quickly learned from Armagh and Tyrone aproaches earlier in the decade, but now these ideas were widespread so the Ulster advantage was lost.

Sure they are only ripping off Antrim.

As quoted by O'Neill from the Kerryman.

"We were Croke Park specialists and they were making their first appearance in All Ireland semifinal. They tried to walk the ball into the net and even when going for points they tried to get close in. So we decided that the only way to stop them was for each man to tackle the forward for whom the pass was intended.

"Of course we did not stand on ceremony, but I must emphaise that at no time did we indulge in reprehensible tactics. Our play completely disrupted Antrim's basketball type of forward play. You must play hard to win an All-Ireland and Antrim failed to change their style despite the fact that we mastered their short passing. We played it hard but we played it fair.

QuoteThats because of the poisnts you have chosen. Breffini park is probably about as close to half way as you can get

Sligo have strong views on where they should play, I am surprised that you are not in Longford!

Quotehill 16 was like a tin of sardines that day

A type of fishy smell, I suppose. East Down folk no doubt.

Quotei also think that the price of tobacco products are a big influence in how many people smoke in ireland, and on the continent.
considering it would cost you at least £5 for a pack of 20 here, yet it is only about €3 in Germany for the same.

It also works the other way around. Where there are lot of tobacco drugies or the politicians smoke they don't put on many taxes or you end up with people smoking in restaurants, like in Germany.
