Quote from: DJGaliv on July 09, 2017, 04:51:47 PMI wouldn't even say we underestimated Roscommon.....

No, I think you hit the nail on the head there. I'm a Rossie living in Galway and everybody from work colleagues down to the local (and national) media where signing Galways praises. It was just a matter of turning up and collecting their cup. The winning score line was going to be a cricket score. Confidence is all good and well but there was no humitily or even the usual GAA attempt at talking up the opposition, Ala Jim Gavin and Carlow/Westmeath for example. It was just smug condescending arrogance by and large from Galway and they got their answer today. Read the Tuam Hearld's piece for example....

That HAD to feed down to the players and it showed in their attitude today. That's not to take away from Roscommon's efforts, they were immence and fully deserving of their win. But Galway could have been, and are, a lot better than today's efforts.

Most of the Rossie's I'd have mentioned have already been name checked but I'll add two more.

Derek Duggan for that free kick and also the goal against Meath in the AI semi final. I was in Croker for that game and still get a tingle when I think about it. As young fellas he was a hero to us and yet he was only about 6/7 years older. He did an U12&14's training session with us that summer and of course we had to see him do the free kick again. We brought the ball well back past the half way line and guffawed to ourselves that he had no chance. First 2 kicks went wide but the 3rd one....
To hear the wallop of him striking that ball and watch it disappear into the far distance right between the two posts... Well he was God like to us and we spent every session that summer afterwards taking free kicks (from the 21 yeard line!). Just those few hours with us inspired a field of youngsters.

Other one is Enon Gavin and the crossbar. I was at that end of the ground in Castlebar and heard the snap as it split. Still the absolute weirdest thing I've witnessed in a senior inter county game and not likely to be repeated. Even more amazing that the ground staff were able to replace it so quickly!

Anyways off the top of my head, GAA outside Roscommon- Plunkett Donaghy, Willie Joe, Val Daly, Ja Fallon, DJ Carey, Seamus Quinn, Nudie Hughes (what a name), Jack O'Shea, Dinny Allen

Random other names and what i think of- Gordon Strachan (angry scot), Lee Chapman (broken nose), Keith Wood (leader, legend when we were properly shit), Gary Linekar (goal hanger), Lothar Matthaus (gruff German), Jurgan Klinsmann(diver), Pete Sampras(curly hair), Ben Johnson(drugs), Linford Christie(lunch box), Eddie Macken(RDS horses & the army team).

For what it's worth Ross it was definitely a free to Roscommon, a push in the back all day long but for Syf to suggest that because Donaghy couldn't avoid him he deserved a red and a long suspension is ridiculous, I would assume most Rossies can see that

Yes we do, nothing in it for 99.9% of us. Was an accident, Donaghy is a big long 6'6", 15 odd stone, string of awkwardness. He was going full pelt after Cregg, fouled him, fell over him, got tangled in Creggs arm/legs and couldn't get his foot far enough forward to clear him and clipped the top of his head.

There was no reaction from Cregg, the Ref, Linesman and more importantly the other Rossie players. If they thought for a second it was deliberate we would have had a big smozzle, hand bags swinging, pushing, shoving and a few lads on their arses.

Instead Donaghy waited beside Cregg until he got up, apologised and that was/is the end of it.

How has this thread descended into a row with the Tyrone posters?

The ignore option sorted out the one man "row" for me...

Cathal and Fintan Cregg are not brothers.

Correct, Finbarr (sub yesterday) is Cathals younger brother not Fintan.

You're assuming Jimmy was happy with Cassidy getting a voucher.

I'd think Jimmy was happy for him to get it.

He was working on getting Cassidy back into the panel before the start of the following season and would not have wanted to rock the boat.

You always have the gander up from now until June, Syf. Is it related to the rotation of the earth?

No, Tis the full moon we think. Touch of the Werewolf about him among other things....

Shocking stuff. Ros playing to their strengths I suppose but its God awful to watch.

Thank God Mayo left the shootings on the bus. 10 wides with a good breeze behind them. Still think they will win though. Subs bench along with a tiring Ros will see them home I think. Some work rate from Ros and that has got to be draining.

Conor is a brother of the other 2 O'Shea's from the head on him I take it??

If so, anyone know if thats a record for Mayo to have three brothers start a game? (Daddy & Mammy O'Shea must be very proud too).

What are people's thoughts on McDermott's 'tackle' on the Cavan man running through at the end.

Cavan obviously needed a goal and the attempted tackle didn't resemble anything in the rules. But he only got a yellow and if I were a Rossie (or any team in the situation) I would have been very happy with him afterwards.

I don't mean to have a go at that particular player, but according to Croke Park, Eugene Magee, Joe Brolly and random statistics, we are now saved from cynical fouling.

I have been reliably informed that it should have been a red card.

My first reaction in the crowd watching it was thats going to be red and most of the people around me thought the same. Having watched it on TG4 yesterday I still think he should have got red. He plays for my club in Ros and is by no means a dirty player and it was certainly out of character for him. A definite rush of blood to the head and a very lucky boy not to have got the line.

Captain obvious anyway . I don't bother reading what SOME rossies spout they talk through their arses.

Fixed that post.

Don't tar us all with the same brush. Like all counties there are good and bad supporters mixed in there...

After looking at that Roscommon team and reading some of the Rossies on this site, especially the very relevant point (NOT) about their record over Mayo in underage recently, I really dont think there is any point in Mayo showing up.

The Connacht board need to start preparing the typeface for the Connacht Final program Roscommon V  L (it'll definetly begin with L)
Who will we get in the back door I wonder?

You mean in the same way they have already engraved Sam Maguire with Mayo All Ireland Champions 2013 ??  8)

Poor auld Seamie, only out of nappies so he couldn't have deserved it - if he kept his mouth shut and his fists away from Brady's ribs that day he might have been left alone

Come off it! You are trying to infer a green 18 year kid in his first season was punching David Brady!!! And thus deserved the off the ball box he got in the face? Thats your justification? Bollox, O'Neill had been playing really well up to that and Brady had to do something to quieten him. It had feck all to do with Brady's ribs or hurt feelings.

Brady had a well earned reputation (and I mean that in a good way) as a teak tough physical player. I remember him coming on against Dublin and putting manners on Ciaran Whelan who had been lording it up to that in the middle in the AI semi final I think? He did not achieve that by simply out playing him or whispering in his lug.

Disgraceful personal attack on Conor Mort Ryano, not quoting you as think they should be removed. Banter is all good and well but that sort of shit is uncalled for. Play the game not the man.

Eh? I don't post here that often but I have seen a hell of a lot worse things put up about players then my comments. A hell of a lot worse. I'm at a bit of a loss why you would get your knickers in a twist over that. "The Mort" I'm sure has laughed off worse comments and was not lying awake last night fretting over me.

I don't understand the Roscommon sense of fear of putting AOS in full-forward. He plays much better in midfield imo. As far as fears go, I'm petrified that Shine, et all will get sufficient ball if Finneran and Mannion do the business around mid-field.

Its the height issue ala Kerry and Mayo in the AI final (not a dig btw). Our FB are all under or barely 6' where as AOS is what 6'4" or 5"?? All Mayo would need to do is drop the ball in high and he would do serious damage I think. I think a fit McGarrity would make a bigger impact in the middle to be honest.

i'm beginning to get a bad feeling about this game  :( . The Mwr bucks are getting more confident as the days pass, our inadequacies are beginning to become more obvious, their quality is being highlighted daily so I'm cancelling all appointments for 23rd as I expect to be heading off to Breffni/Portlaoise/Croker for a 4th round game. If the Rhus dominate possession as they did against Galway I fear they will have their feet straightened unlike the last day and can see the hoors raining over points from all angles ( as they always seem to do against us -- 99/02/09 e.g). A chastening may await .... but even if it does I think we will have the mental strength to arise a better team from it...  but in 2012/13/14.

I'm not getting a bad feeling, I always have one when we face Mayo to be honest... It's just a small bit diluted this time by a hint of optimism based on current forms. Too many bad memories of getting pasted by them in both McHale and Hyde park over the past decade to be thinking of this being a walk in the park for us. A lot of issues for both teams, i think it will come down to which team can over come theirs best that will decide the winner.

Quote from: ross matt on July 04, 2011, 08:03:29 PMAgreed he's an attention seeker alright Ryano but he would trouble us from frees if he is fit for the final. That and the possibility of McGarrity back midfield would free up Aidan O'Se for full forward. They then could rain down high ball on our vertically challenged full back line. One way or the other it would make Mayo  a much improved version of the side that beat Galway.

Oh no doubt. He is a nacky little player, very hard mark and he would have done a hell of a lot better then some of his team mates against Galway with the free kicks. I remember him giving Seanie Mac a torrid time of it in The Hyde a few years back. Can't see him starting at all but if he makes the bench we could see him playing the last 15/20 minutes if things are not going well for them.

Mayo will be a very different beast to the one that fell over the line against London and eventually beat Galway out the gate. They are improving steadily with each game and I am having the same nightmares about McGarrity coming back into the middle and the Kerryman going to FF. In that case we would really need to be on top in the middle to stop high ball going in and doing damage.

Quote from: criostlinn on July 04, 2011, 09:09:27 PMAs for the Mort...

The Mort!?! The M-O-R-T! Jesus wept as if there are not enough things to pull the piss out of him over already.... Has he got "The Mort" tattoo'd on himself?

Quote from: criostlinn on July 04, 2011, 09:09:27 PMThe boys in shrule better get used to looking at him practising frees for the next few weeks. Maybe they should go out and kick it back to him instead of standing idly by looking and begrudging a man thats trying to get back after a serious injury.

The boys in Shrule think he is a gobshite. Trevor is far more popular then his peroxide blond rat featured brother with his neighbours and fellow clubmen. And all "The Mort" was doing was running laps of the field and posing. No balls involved apart from his own two and I get the feeling the mass goers would have happily kicked those ones for him ;)
