GAA Discussion / Re: pairc ui chaoimh

Hardstation's question goes to the heart of the matter. The extra £32m required will obviously not be coming from the GAA and the idea that a civil servant might sign it off is fanciful. Without a Stormont executive, the Ulster Council may have see what could be built with the original £77m which was allocated and presumably remains in place. A 25,000 capacity stadium, possibly with two main stands and terraced areas at either end, would be brilliant for Antrim and may yet have to fit the bill at provincial level if the planning permission ever comes through.

Connaire Harrison is working in London at the moment but he is due home in the autumn. It would be pretty surprising if he is not available for our soon to be appointed new manager.

Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime was a massive hit in 1970 but there are a number of reasons why a major label would be unlikely to release it today. Shaggy changed the lyrics when he re-recorded in in 1995.

In the summertime when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find
If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton or a ton an' twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by

We don't yet know the name of the police officer who died in Bilbao during the clashes with visiting Spartak Moscow fans last night but the scale of the confrontations represented ominous news for the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Mourinho built a great team at Porto on relatively limited resources. In all his subsequent appointments, he has demanded and been given the opportunity to bring in highly paid players for huge fees rather than develop home grown talent. His approach is no longer working and the groans in the background at  Old Trafford are likely to steadily increase.

The fixtures list in today's paper definitely says that all Sunday's D2 games start at 2pm, with the only exception Roscommon v Meath at 2.30pm. Several counties named their teams last night so there is no reason why our line-up should not be released this evening at the latest. Delaying it any further suggests uncertainty on our part.

KW, the person in question is a former student at the college but Fr Rory is its present chaplain. As well as his role as a school governor, he is still listed as the assistant secretary to the Armagh GAA county board as well as a member of its management committee and a delegate to the Ulster Council. Social media reports say that he posted his mobile number with the images on Grindr, a website which involves a very specific set of activities. No one has suggested any illegal conduct, but, when you say you are not sure if there is anything to `get away with' in his case, are you proposing that he should simply resume all his existing responsibilities, educational, sporting and spiritual ?

It is entirely understandable that considerable sympathy exists for Fr Rory but some posters seem to be unclear about the key issues in his case. His story has been pretty widely reported, and one tabloid yesterday set out how he sent naked images of himself as well what were described as `racy messages' to a young man who turned out to have been a former student at the named college where Fr Rory is the chaplain. Fr Rory is not only a priest but more to the point is a school governor as well as a chaplain and described himself as a lecturer on his messages to the Grindr website, which most people will be aware exists for a specific reason. No lecturer, governor or chaplain is likely to get away with that kind of behaviour, regardless of gender or orientation. Others can debate the contradictions involved in his role as a priest but the posters who suggest that he has somehow been a victim of media bullying are taking a very benign view of his actions.

Speculative, you have a short memory. When we went into this summer's championship in Omagh without big King, both our midfielders were replaced at half-time.  In the qualifier against Kildare, we were again cleaned out down the middle and Turley did not even make it to the break before being subbed.

Last summer, King was outstanding in the first round against Derry and again in the semi against Donegal. The amount of work he gets through is sometimes only appreciated when he is not there, and it is difficult to believe you are seriously suggesting that our midfield improved this year in his absence.

A `big lump' in the shape of Gallagher actually destroyed McAuley on Sunday by doing exactly what King does through covering space, winning the ball and laying it off simply. If we can come up with an equally effective midfield which does not include King, we will be doing very well indeed.

General discussion / Re: place to watch GAA in Riva
August 26, 2014, 04:13:13 PM
When we were there in 2011, we could not find any Irish bars close to Riva. There is a good one called the Fiddler of Dooney, which at that time was owned by a guy from Sligo who showed all the games on a number of screens, but it is around an hour's drive away in Desenzano. We got there by bus but the taxi fare back to Riva that night was about 100 euro. After watching Down getting hammered by Cork, it did not really seem a good investment. Online options might be a better bet.

GAA Discussion / Re: Mc Geeney number 1

Yellowcard, although you now say you never said the report was not true, your previous post described it as a `load of balls'. People in the Armagh camp know what is happening, which is why there is not been a hint of a denial even after the story was picked up by the broadcasters during the day. You should wait and see what Grimley has to say publicly when the time is right.

Posters like Yellowcard who seem to believe that senior people in the Armagh camp do not talk to journalists must live in a very naive world. The report in this morning's paper was pretty clearly based on a detailed briefing and there has not been a word of denial from anyone during the course of the day. It is doubtful if it will have the slightest effect on the players, who know what is happening anyway, and it will be worth waiting for what Grimley says on the record whenever his season ends.

The bridge is essentially to facilitate visitors passing between the Cooley and Mourne scenic areas, who, with the best will in the world, are unlikely to be tempted into Newry. It will cost the northern tax payer less than £3m, which it is likely to recoup from the increased tourist trade fairly quickly, and it will be of huge benefit to the struggling construction industry in the short term. The link from Omeath to Newry is scheduled to be upgraded as well, and there is nothing to prevent the separate case for road improvements around Newry from being pursued. Sinn Fein and the SDLP are obviously strongly in favour of the bridge, the DUP has agreed through Sammy Wilson and the Ulster Unionists are likely to follow with Danny Kennedy. There are very few projects capable of getting the backing of all our main political parties, and even fewer initiatives from Stormont which ever see the light of day, but you cannot keep everyone happy.

According to Twitter and Facebook, the main speakers at tonight's rally in Ballyconnell in support of the Quinn family are Mickey Harte, Sean Boylan and Colm O'Rourke. With Peter Quinn junior turning up with his father at the Fermangh championship match on Friday, the impression is being given that the GAA is backing the Quinn campaign all the way.

McParland would obviously be something of a gamble, as he has never played championship football, but his league form would suggest that he is worth the risk. McKernan's ability is not in question, but MDG must be in a very small minority of Down supporters who would place him at centre half back after everything we have seen from him over recent months. A spell in a free role at the back, or even as a ball winner at wing half forward, might do wonders for his confidence and equally importantly his concentration.
