The committee spent £400,000 on the logo for the games!
Suppose that counts PR and promotion and today's launch but that is an astounding amount for such a symbol of crap!

My favourite logo is still the one from Italia '90 no matter how cheap it looked, really stuck in the mind

Nothing would really surprise me, FB. However, the Games were not awarded to the UK, they were awarded to London. In fact, the Olympic Charter expressly forbids events from being held outside the host city, except where necessity (e.g. yachting) or logistics (e.g. soccer) demands.
