Can anybody on the Board recommend a good scotch whisky?
I want to bring back a bottle for someone who usually drinks Irish Whiskey (He complains about some of the scotches having a burnt taste).
Are single malts the best?
Never underestimate the power of complaining

Hardy

As someone who can't stand that smoked taste of Scotch that you describe, I wouldn't be impressed if somebody who knew that bought me a bottle of Scotch, no matter how supposedly "good". All Scotch has that defect, so he won't like it. Get him any Irish whiskey that suits your budget.

Donagh

Can't stand the stuff either but I'm told Jura is a good one:

Donagh, i took a liking to this after trying it. I would like Bushmills and found this to be very drinkable. And it wasnt sore on the pocket either, there's all different grades of it from about £15 upwards

Longshanks

Yeah to be honest if he is an Irish Whiskey drinker who drinks bush then cannot see him liking any kind of Scottish Whiskey no matter how good or expensive it is..
They all have that smokey (dam awful in my opinion) taste and its something you like or dislike..

Irish Whiskeys are bland and tame.

Scotch is an improvement on it.

Anything from Islay and he'll be hooked. Argbeg or Bowmore.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

in fairness irish is smooth as opposed to bland.

Could never get on to whiskey properly. Used to drink Canadian Club for a while when I was in Canada for the summer but never bothered with it when I came home. It's definitely an acquired taste but the only thing happens me when I drink it is a bad taste in my mouth and a stinking hangover!

Just to annoy you Hardy - fine lecture on Scotch = http://www.nyas.org/snc/podcastdetail.asp?id=1775

Why would it annoy me, you filthy festering gumboil?

ONeill

Listening to that Podcast has driven me to make my own whiskey out me da's back, using Hill peat.

As some-one who only drinks Irish, a guy gave me a try of Dalwhinnie 15yr recently, for a Scotch it was pretty smooth, I liked it a lot.
