General discussion / Filthy Cities ...
April 13, 2011, 09:52:51 PM
Fascinating show on BBC 2 this weather with Dan Snow. He did medieval London and this week it was revolutionary Paris. Absolutely amazing to see how filthy cities were - especially the 'Shambles' - which was the place were all the animals were slaughtered and meat sold - all in one process. There is a place still in Armagh called the 'Shambles' and the Belfast version was where Castlecourt is now. Indeed, Royal Avenue was built to do away with all the unofficial butchers' shops in that area. All the leftovers were dumped in the Farset River (now under Primark and High Street - indeed on hot days there is still a stench from the river. Great stuff and New York next week.

General discussion / Bloody Students!

Well done to the local students who condemned the violence in London today. However, just one thing? Who the feck paid for ye to travel to London for the protest. I would be suprised to hear that you have worked many late nights in some local bar to subsidise your soiree (plane, accommodation, expenses etc). Methinks that Mummy and Daddy - or Heaven forbid the Students' Union - paid for your freebee. Bottom line is that the fees are going up and this annual protest (second Wednesday every November) was just another excuse to seem 'radical'. Same every year. Get a life or more pointedly GET A JOB!

General discussion / Margaret Thatcher....

I know that the woman is sick. Anyway. As she is to get a state funeral on a week day, does that mean that we in the Occupied Six will get the day off work? I mean, if anything, I wouldn't complain if I got a 'duvet day' while all the Tories wailed and sobbed. It would be quite ironic if she passed away and, say for example, Clint Eastwood died also. That would mean that we could sit up and have a few beers and then the next day stay in bed and watch re-runs od Dirty Harry etc on RTE or Channel 4. Thanks ..

Surely they wont put this double-header on at Thurles? There will be a lot of pressure from Cork and Tipp to keep it 'down south' ....

Says it all doesn't it?

I'd say 10 points to Offaly at Parnell...  We're back to 1982 again...

ok - my money is on Argentina. Perhaps that is down to he fact that Messi could be 'The Man' - but like Maradonna in 1982, the pressure could be too much so I am puting me money on England (they have to win it some time and for a bet ... why not?).

On the grapevine - just as it seems that the French football association's failure to admit that they beat Ireland by cheating has led to Paddy Power paying out, it seems that those who told us that Stormont Rule would lead to a United Ireland has lead to a similar decision - DISCUSS.

General discussion / The End of Cheap Flights?
August 28, 2008, 10:27:11 PM
I see tonight that the soaring costs of fuel have claimed 'Zoom Travel' who flew to Canada from London, Glasgow etc. Would anyone give me odds on who will be next? Jet 2? Easyjet? etc.. I read the book by Paul Kilduff who travelled around Europe on Ryanair - good insight into the world of penny-pinching. Interesting to note that in 2006, O' Leary hedged his bets on fuel not going over £75 a barrel. Well we all know that even Ryanair were caught out by that one. But, the attitude of O'Leary was that 'if we are struggling, well the rest are getting it worse and we'll buy them off one by one as they fall. High risk strategy and it will be interesting to see how this pans out. Personally, I'm going to buy three coaches and start the old bus, boat, bus ride to London trip. Sorry folks, but the days of the 0.01 cent trip mey be FECKED...

Ok - Cork v Kerry in the semi-final and - perhaps - Dublin v Wexford in the other... What was all the sh1te about about Provincial finals about? Cork v Kerry - 1 final and 2 semis in the last five years... makes a monkey out of the Munster final. I do feel sorry for the punters who paid good money into the to see that. The Leinster Council are milking the Dubs..  If Kildare v Loais had been the Leinster final for the last three years... well?  The sooner that we get a new system the better.....

Watching the after match interviews last night, YOU KNOW, and the amount of "You Knows?" was unreal - especially, you know, from Armagh ones... Is it just a habit or a sign, YOU KNOW, that we cannot put a sentence together? You know? A Tohill is, YOU KNOW, the same etc WHY?

Well .. any views? - has this been fixed for Navan or will they toss a coin for the venue? I called at the office in Casement Park today asking if they knew where the match was fixed for and the girl said "Here mate, There's 20p, go and phone someone who gives a f**k!"........
