This Easter Monday our Laois Hurlers will take on Cork in a challenge match in Clough Ballacolla as part of the 100 Year Commemoration of our 1915 All Ireland Hurling Championship win.

To mark the occasion our players will be kitted out in the colours worn by the Ballygeehan team who represented Laois in that All Ireland Final.

The match will take place against Cork on Easter Monday at 2.30pm at Ballacolla.

The benefit however to Leix from a Ballygeehan powered team was the extra players for the county senior panel. The preparations for the 1915 senior campaign were very intensive and the benefits were obvious. For the second year in a row Kilkenny were beaten by a point 4-1 to 2-6 on 6 June at Tullamore. A period of intense preparation including two practice games with Dublin and Kilkenny followed. Mr. J. J. Higgins was mainly responsible for arranging the practices and the adoption of the system of training that proved so successful.

Both teams had a tough route to the final, Leix overcoming former champs Kilkenny and a rising Dublin team, winners in 1917. Cork had put paid to the cream of Munster, Tipperary in round 1, Limerick in the semi, and the All-Ireland Champions Clare in the final. Both teams traveled up on Saturday for the game. Leix wore black and amber hoops while Cork wore yellow jerseys. The teams took the fields amidst a drenching downpour.

Leix were first on field to be followed by Cork led on by the Barrack Street Brass Band. Though playing well, the first twenty minutes of the game was a nightmare for Leix. Wide after wide while Cork registered two goals. A point from a free by Phelan opened the Leix account but Cork were down for an other goal. Joe Phelan scored the first Leix goal after 21 minutes. Leix on top had a second goal from John Phelan. Leix finished the half with a point from Tom Finlay.

Half- Time Cork 3-0, Leix 2-2.

The bookies who before the game were four to one to Leix were now offering six to four. On the resumption Cork pressed but Leix got down to score a magnificent goal through Hiney. A second goal by Hiney had Leix in control. Stout defending by O' Keefe kept Cork out. The brilliant play of Tom Finlay was being appreciated all around the ground. After 21 minutes of the second half Jack Carroll had a goal for Leix. Cork
got down, a third goal. John Finlay never gave the Cork forwards a chance after this they could not pass him. A point for Cork was followed by Hineys third goal. Leix's
All Ireland 6-2 to 4-1.

Among the 15,000 spectators was a heavy weight boxing champion Jack Johnston then in revue at a Dublin music hall "He appeared to be a supporter of Leix too"

This should be a great occasion for Laois hurling and we can expect one really hard game from Cork with their league semi final against Dublin not for two weeks.

I hope there is a great turnout on the day!

Anyone go to this yesterday? Was there a big crowd at it?

Seems to have been a decent run out for the lads.

Cork 1-25
Laois 0-24

Cork senior hurling manager Jimmy Barry Murphy expects Mark Ellis and Alan Cadogan to return for the Rebels Allianz League semi-final against Dublin on Sunday week. The pair both picked up hamstring injuries in last month's league loss to Tipperary in Páirc Uí Rinn.
"Mark and Alan have been working hard to get back into contention," Barry-Murphy said after yesterday's three-point win over Laois in Ballacolla.
"The two lads will be back certainly, but we will assess them more during the week, but I am happy that they will be available."

The game, commemorating Laois's lone All-Ireland SHC triumph 100 years ago, began on a positive note for the hosts, but ultimately Paudie O'Sullivan's sharpshooting proved the difference between the sides.
Laois led 0-6 to 0-2 after 10 minutes, with Zane Keenan, Paddy Purcell and Ross King firing early scores, but despite a string of stunning saves from keeper Eoin Reilly, they let Cork into contention, with Luke Meade levelling after 28 minutes at 0-10 apiece.
Laois pushed ahead with a trio of Keenan points, but O'Sullivan's goal ensured a 1-11 to 0-14 interval scoreline. Cork led for the first time five minutes after the restart, and although Laois kept in touch, Cork worked hard for the win, with O'Sullivan and Jamie Coughlan impressive.
