Almost 500 jobs will be lost in the Midlands as Bord na Mona closes 17 industrial bogs.

For certain places in Offaly say this is like the mine closures in England in the 80s. Will the government do it English style and ignore the communities or will it support them until they become productive again as was the case in Germany when it closed its mines ?

If the above is accurate, then government support would cost a lot less than the status quo.

I think this wouldn't be the case nowadays.
The age profile of those whose jobs are at risk would be fairly high.

Even still if you take decent jobs out of an area and don't replace them young people won't hang around.
Average salary of 50K where there is nothing else is hard to replace and the multiplier effect would be good as well.
I remember when BnM closed the Attymon turf operation in East Galway in the 80s.
It was never the same afterwards in Killimordaly.

I don't think the permanent government is very good at these sort of transitiions

Peat harvesting should have  been stopped decades ago

Same with private companies strip mining peat for gardening products.

In the 80s when the country was banjaxed, there was rarely the ability to replace one big employer with another.
I'd say there is a better chance of something being done to help a big job shock like this when it's a large number. It's the slow and gradual hollowing out of rural Ireland that gets ignored. A bank closure, a shop closure, 5 people laid off. The small individual occurences that all combine to make the big decline.
