GAA player critical after off the ball incident
Mark McGovern - Left Ireland last week for a three-week stay in the US Tuesday, 28 June 2011 09:48
The Star newspaper is reporting that a 22-year-old from Fermanagh is in a crictical condition in a US hospital after being involved in an off the ball incident during a club football game in San Francisco over the weekend.

Mark McGovern from the Belcoo O'Rahilly's club in Fermanagh was rushed to hospital on Saturday night after the altercation, while playing his first game for the Ulster Club.

The player is believed to have been involved in a clash with a player from the opposing Celts side, which resulted in a brain injury.

A statement from Belcoo O'Rahilly's read: 'The club would like to ask all its members to keep Mark McGovern and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Mark suffered a severe head injury during his debut for Ulster San Francisco on Saturday night and he has been in a coma since.

'Two other Belcoo players, Emmet Scollan and Ciaran Flaherty, were playing the the same game and they have been at Mark's bedside since.

'Messages of support have been overwhelming but we would like to keep the three lads in our prayers and we hope Mark comes around shortly and he can make a full recovery.'

Steelers may play NFL game at Croker News

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Susan Falvella Garraty

Ambassador Dan Rooney, Art Rooney II, Sportscaster Jim Nantz and former Pittsburgh Steelers star Franco Harris.

The Super Bowl-bound Pittsburgh Steelers might also be Ireland bound for a regular 2011-2012 regular season game. That's the word from the huddle after the team's championship win over the New York Jets last weekend.

The clincher for a Steelers appearance would likely be Dan Rooney, whose family own the franchise and who is himself the current U.S. Ambassador in Dublin.

And the Echo has learned that some groundwork has already been laid for a regular season game at the GAA headquarters which has a seating capacity in excess of 80,000.

A spokeswoman for Ireland's  Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Mary Hanafin, told the Echo Tuesday that discussions have already been held at the official level on the potential of a NFL regular season game being played in Ireland in the fall.

"Minister Mary Hanafin would very much welcome such a move to hold a future NFL game in Ireland, which has such a proud sporting tradition. There would be a great welcome for visiting fans traveling with the teams to Ireland as well as huge interest locally,  and a knock on boost for Ireland from a tourism perspective," the spokeswoman said.

At the end of Sunday's game against the Jets, Ambassador Rooney held aloft the Lamar Hunt trophy Rooney, who left the day to day running of the team to his son Art Rooney II in 2003, has overseen the development of a team that is now tied with the Dallas Cowboys for most Super Bowl appearances.

Of course the team has seen its share of notoriety, particularly from its quarterback, "Big" Ben Roethlisberger, who has had his own personal fumbles that include a serious motorcycle accident, and suspension this season for his behavior in a bar with a young woman.

Perhaps hearing a whisper on the Three Rivers wind, Roethlisberger  recently said he would like to bring a regular NFL game to the Emerald Isle

For the last four years, the NFL has played a regular season game in London. Last October, it was the San Francisco against the Denver Broncos in Wembley Stadium. Roethlisberger was asked by the local Beaver County Times newspaper if he'd like to see the Steelers play in London.

In his response he groused a bit about the length of the flight, but came up with a way to go overseas and shorten the time in the air just a bit.

"I think it would be fun to go play in Ireland where Ambassador Rooney is. That would be kind of fun," he said.

Big Ben's suggestion has clearly been taken literally and to heart in Dublin where big college football games have been played before enthusiastic crowds in recent years.

Perhaps the Ireland game could be a replay against the Jets, a team that thinks green all year round.

GAA Discussion / Martin Clarke's AFL Debut
February 16, 2007, 12:35:35 AM
Hi There,

For any of you Sydneysiders, I see from today's Australian that Martin Clarke will make his AFL debut tonight at the North Sydney Oval 6.30, Good Luck to him ...

Sherrin skills now first rate
Jenny McAsey
February 16, 2007

MARTIN CLARKE has only put the oval ball down to sleep and eat since he was recruited from Ireland by Collingwood last October.
But the strategy to fast-track the skills of the 19-year-old Irish rookie has paid off and he will make a surprise debut for the Magpies in the 15-a-side exhibition game against the Swans tonight at North Sydney Oval.
"Some of the coaches devised a plan that if I took the oval ball with me everywhere, around the house, even in the car at the lights to just have it in my hands I would get used to it quicker. That has definitely been a good plan because I can bounce it fairly well at the minute," Clarke said.

He can not only bounce it, but juggle the Sherrin with his feet, a deed that had his Collingwood team-mates clapping and cheering as they inspected North Sydney Oval yesterday.

Clarke, from County Down in the north of the Republic, is the latest arrival in the Irish invasion of the AFL that has gathered pace with the success of Swans' premiership player, Tadhg Kennelly.

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse said the Kennelly "experiment" had prompted the club to scout Ireland and find Clarke.

"The few months we have had him he has progressed to the point where he will play against Sydney, which is a credit to him," Malthouse said.

Clarke's knowledge of the AFL before he arrived was limited to watching a Sunday night highlights package. Like Kennelly, he was a Gaelic football star who impressed recruiting staff with his athleticism and attitude.

Now he is aiming to play at least one senior game with the Magpies by the end of this year.

"The chances of that happening are probably slim but I will work hard and you never know," Clarke said.

He has spoken to Kennelly on the phone and will meet him for the first time tonight. "I just love watching him play and respect what he has done. If I can achieve that it would be amazing," said Clarke, who expects to play off a halfback flank like the Swans star.

Kennelly won't be playing as both clubs rest most of their senior players and trial youngsters and their draft recruits.

"It's mainly for the young guys to see how close or how far away they are from playing AFL footy," Swans coach Paul Roos said.

"It's been the start of some pretty good careers out here.

"It's going to be entertaining with a couple of experienced guys and the future of Collingwood and the future of the Swans running out here."

Sydney will play a handful of senior players including Craig Bolton, Ted Richards, Nick Davis, Adam Schneider and Nick Malceski, while Collingwood will field Shane Wakelin, Scott Burns, Leon Davis, Nick Maxwell, Rhyce and Heath Shaw, Travis Cloke and Fremantle recruit, Paul Medhurst.
