Title: Laois Intermediate Football Championship 2019
Post by: The PRO on February 28, 2019, 09:54:21 AM
Round 1
Mountmellick v Timahoe
Portlaoise v Clonaslee
Annanough v Rosenallis
The Rock v St Joseph's

Very open championship.
Any of 5 teams could win it in my opinion with maybe The Rock, Annanough and Joseph's the weaker three.

4 pretty even games in that draw there. Very hard to call this championship.

Said I'd have a go at previewing this. Looks like a very open championship.

Usually you'd expect the team coming down from senior and the team beaten in last year's final to be there or thereabouts.

So Clonaslee and Mountmellick for the final? Mightn't be that simple. Both teams are down a number of "Gaels" players from last year as a result of Croke Park's directive.

Mountmellick had a difficult league but were operating in 1B and got a few good results. Clonaslee had a great league and are due to play Portlaoise in the Division 2 final this Sunday which will be a preview of their meeting in the first round of the championship.

Hard to know with Portlaoise but one of these years, they are going to win this title. I'm convinced of it! Could be this year if they get enough interest in the second team. I should be waiting until after Sunday's league final to make a call on them!

Timahoe play Mountmellick in the first round. In recent years, they've been close to ending their senior exile but slipped back a bit last year. Had a very up and down league campaign. Could be a kick in them. Interesting game.

Rosenallis play Annanough in round one. Annanough should be buoyed by winning the junior last year but Rosenallis have settled into intermediate well after their junior win in 2016 and won their league meeting by a big margin.

Finally, it's The Rock v St Joseph's. Hard one to call. The Rock did well in the league but it was Division 3 whereas Joes were two divisions higher but got it hard to balance senior team commitments with player numbers for this second string team and only won one game before withdrawing near the end.

Prediction;

Portlaoise, Mountmellick, Rosenallis and The Rock to win first round games.

Depending on the draw then, possibly Mountmellick to play Clonaslee and Portlaoise to play Rosenallis in the semi-finals.

A Mountmellick v Portlaoise final with Mountmellick to lose their second final in a row.

Joseph's v Annanough in relegation final with Joseph's going down.

Not at all confident of many of those predictions now that I've written them down!

I'm expecting Clonaslee to just about get back up with Timahoe not far off either Clonaslee love winning intermediate championships and have done consistently and will fear no one and bully everyone. Timahoe have a right good team and with Quigley back have a dominant player to drive them forward Mountmellick Rosenallis Portlaoise will all be comfortable but just don't have enough dog in them to see out tough games   The Rock annanough and Joseph's will struggle a bit due to numbers and first teams but the rock are a wee bit better then the other two and I can see Annanough just having enough to stay up

After last night's senior game and the league final last week, I'd have to change my view that Portlaoise might win the IFC.
Micky Nolan is gone up as are Rogers, Mulligan, Paddy Downey, and the two young lads Maher and Ronan Mc. Along with that, t the likes of Adrian Kelly, Scott Lawless, Conor Dunphy and John Kavanagh weren't named on the panel last night so I doubt they'll play intermediate.

Mountmellick and Timahoe was a poor game considering a lot of people predicted the winners of the championship would come out of it. Not too many county players on show I didn't think. Damien O'Connor was decent, but Quigley was a bit off the pace. Conor Whelehan for Timahoe might be an option.

Portlaoise  win with a bit to spare. Hard to make sense of league form.

Must have not shown there full hand in the league final. Clever from Portlaoise.

They look the favourites for it now but have fallen at the last few hurdles in recent years so who knows.

Still looks a wide open championship. Timahoe v Clonaslee in the losers section is a massive game. I reckon the team that wins that could bounce right back with a chance of winning the championship. On the other hand, you'd have to say Annanough v Joseph's looks like the real relegation final.

Anyone any thoughts on how the Intermediate is going to go? Looks to be very close between the teams that will probably be left in it after the weekend's fixtures. Presuming Portlaoise and Clonaslee win semi-final line up will be.

Rosenallis vs Portlaoise
Mountmellick vs Clonaslee

Wouldn't rule out Annanough giving Portlaoise their fill of it. From what I've seen though Mountmellick look to be out in front with Rosenallis a dark horse.

Yeah, it's hard one to call I think it's a very close championship, But just looking at results and will be interesting to see tonight what way Clonaslee and The Rock finish up with Rosenallis having beaten them by 17 points in the earlier round.  Let's see what way results go tonight, And your right Annanough have absolutely nothing to fear at all.

Annanough generally don't lose to Portlaoise's second team. They just might edge that one.
Can't see The Rock troubling Clonaslee in the other game.

Not too sure that's true, well in recent times. I can remember Portlaoise hammered them in a league final a few years back. They were comfortable winners tonight as well, but I think Portlaoise are the weakest of the 4 left. Clonaslee look like they've improved.

I believe Portlaoise can opt to enter a second team in the senior championship if they win the intermediate. But they can also opt to stay down in which case the relegated team is saved.

Two very hard games to call really. You never know with Portlaoise intermediates what sort of team they'll have. Mountmellick might scrape over Clonaslee in the other one but you wouldn't be putting the house on either game.

Both games should be close, Rosenallis vs Portlaoise not on until Monday night in O'Moore Park, Maybe Portlaoise might use 1 or 2 of their intermediate team on Sunday afternoon in the senior.

Clonaslee vs Mountmellick think Mountmellick might have a bit much for Clonaslee in this game but on the other hand, you can never write off Clonaslee.

Mountmellick lose to Clonaslee and are out of Intermediate. Very poor result for them, Laois could do with a strong Mountmellick team given the size of the area.

That's some score Rosenallis put up tonight. Sets up a very tasty clash between them and Clonaslee.

Rosenallis in particular have a couple of players worthy of a look in with Laois. Hopefully they go in to the Divisional competition.

Looking forward to the final later. I'd imagine there's no love lost between these two. Not sure what the situation is with Eoin Dunne from Rosenallis, but if hes not fit to play then you'd have to tip your hat to Clonaslee here. They need to make sure fifteen stay on the pitch though!

nothing really,
Clonaslee had a player sent off in the first half for an off the ball incident.
and another in the second half for a second yellow card.
Rosenallis and Clonaslee had a player each sent off in injury time black card and second yellow respectively.
match was close and exciting put the quality of football was poor.
no trouble on the side line and certainly none of the antics that went on during Portlaoise and Portarlington.
possibly best football team but we were lucky to hang on in the end.

Yes was a poor game of football for our second tier competition and neither team seemed to have a plan or method of playing but conditions were poor.

Whatever about on the field the stand was full of abuse and language towards supporters and players was something I would not like gaa to be associated with.

I agree the abuse from supporters of both teams was at times way over the top. I would know most supporters from both teams and it is amazing how some people behave in the heat of the moment.
I would have to say that both sidelines were well behaved and did not involve in nasty stuff.

On another note Rosenallis won U17 football championship tonight defeating the Heath by one point.
Good game could have gone either way, great week for Rosenallis and hopefully more success to come next weekend.

The Kilkenny lads bet the Dublin champs at the weekend and had a massive lead on them at one stage too .They were The same Dublin lads that bet Emo a couple of years ago in the Leinster intermediate. Won't be easy at all . Plenty of decent footballers in Kilkenny only there is no interest .

rosenallis have had easier draws all along the club championship and the same in the leinster championship so i would not see them stumbling agains the kk champs.  dublin club football outside of senior is not strong at all and also they could have taken the kk football team to lightly and got caught on the hop. rosenallis still fresh as no real hard games and its a definite final for them to cap off a good year.

Disappointed to see that result. I think John Lennon was carrying an injury and went off in the first half. Rosenallis also had a man sent off early in the game. If Lennon and Murray had stayed on the pitch it would've made a huge difference.

Quiet sobering or quiet embarrassing. Kilkenny team in a football final. It's like having a louth team in the hurling final. Fair play to mullinavat but did rosenallis take them for granted. I've never heard of kilkenny club in a leinster football final. Maybe it's just how much laois football has declined but all In all a good year for rosenallis.

You should never be embarrassed when you're beaten fair and square. They were a physically imposing team who also tackled well. Laois teams will always struggle against that.

Where was the plan to combat that. At the end of the day its kilkenny football. Correct me if I'm wrong but are they the only county without and intercounty football team?

It's not that big a disaster . It's the best team in the whole of county Kilkenny beating our intermediate champions Rosenallis who are fond of the hurling themselves in a big way .Wouldnt it be worse if the Kilkenny lads were able to beat our senior football champions ?  I'd be more concerned with Portlaoise losing to Éire Og tonight and the decline of a club with a population of 25,000 people .

Did that Kilkenny team not beat the Dublin champions in the previous round?? I don't think you'd say Dublin football is on decline cos of that result.

Ballyboughal lost Leinster Intermediate final 2017 by two points. Mullinavat are there on merit and fair play to them. Best team won on the day. Im sure Rosenallis are happy with their year.

County and club football are two separate entities. Clubs such as Muckalee, The Railway and Mullinavat would be very competitive if they were playing their football in Laois with all three clubs a match for any intermediate side in Laois. Mullinavat have made huge progress over the last couple of years winning the last three Kilkenny championships in very impressive fashion and I reckon would be ahead of four or five senior sides in Laois if were competing in our senior championship.

I feel recognition of their success should be acknowledged and congratulated. To say that it was a disgrace on the part of Rosenallis to lose to a Kilkenny club side is to be ignorant of the work that Mullinavat have put into developing a fine football team.  Rosenallis had a great run in 2019 and should be happy with the success they had. No shame in falling at the hurdle that they did. It was always going to be a 50/50 game.

How many teams play in the Kilkenny Championship? Are there Intermediate and Junior grades? And is the Mullinavat team made up entirely of players from Mullinavat? Apologies for all the questions. I don't know why, but I just feel like there's something fishy going on here

I think there's 12 senior teams. Mullinavat are the senior champions, don't forget. I think their intermediate champions play in the Leinster junior club competition.
