Title: Motorsport Thread
Post by: GiveItToTheShooters on June 19, 2019, 01:55:28 PM
Haven't came across any motorsport threads on here so thought I'd start one up for any fans that there may be.. Motorbikes, F1 etc etc

Just back from the Moto GP at the weekend, after Lorenzo took out Dovizioso, Rossi and ViƱales is the championship now Marquez's already? Hard to see past it.

Would not be into the bikes much. WRC (and any type of rallying) and F1 would be my passion. Donegal Rally is on this weekend which is probably Ireland's biggest motorsport event annually.

Also talk of the WRC returning to Ireland next year instead of Rally UK.

I'd love to see the WRC back here. It was a great event last time around. Hard to believe it was 12 years ago. Unfortunately, for me anyway, the WRC is a shadow of its former self even from that time.

There was an F1 thread (http://gaaboard.com/board/index.php?topic=28502.0) but it didn't get a whole lot of traction.

A lot of bad stuff seemed to happen at this Donegal Rally, with all the arrests too. What's going on? Any Donegal men on here?

I was about letterkenny the whole weekend working and the problem seemed to be that half the ones who go to the rally don't actually go to the rally, they go to letterkenny in their modified cars and drive about doing laps. Gets worse at night then because the diffing starts on the quieter roads and then the drinking.

One of the things that spoils Donegal all year round is the peril of the roads. I know of no other place where there is the same fascination with death wish driving. I listened to a RTE radio documentary in which a number of these young fellas were interviewed as they sat reving their engines on the Main Street. They kept referencing the manliness of the behaviour.

The individual deaths are tragic especially when you see the impact on those left behind but culturally there is something at play that has to be stopped. Would be interested to hear the views of the young girls of Donegal. Do they find this d**khead behaviour attractive?

So 40 odd arrests out of 70k-80K people who come into the county for the full weekend is considered a problem?

This. The Rally itself is well organized and has a good crowd at it. Whilst the overwhelming majority are sitting enjoying the rally in Portsalon or the like there are some idiots who drive about Letterkenny (not near the rally) in their modified cars, add in the drink/drugs element at night and this is where the arrests usually take place.

Totally agree. The genuine rally fans are not the problem. I have been to the rally in excess of 20 times. I've competed in it as well. It is a fantastic event run by a brilliant motor club. Unfortunately there is a bad element that has latched on to the weekend but have no interest in the stages. Id love to see the Garda bring in a mobile car crusher and bale any cars that are not legal...

Fantastic end to the F1 season. Delighted for Max Verstappen. Deserving winner and a new Champion from a different team is just what the sport needed. Exciting and exhilarating stuff.

Completely agree.
Just saw Mercedes have launched some sort of complaints. Not sure what they can do about it now

Watching the Cookstown 100. Main race - what's the rules? Why did front 4 starters appear to get a 5 or 10 second start over the next cohort?
