Quote from: brokencrossbar1 on April 23, 2024, 02:19:48 PMI remember at the time it sent chills through the whole  nationalist community. Just listening to Talkback and Trevor Birney talking about and how attacking someone like Sean Brown was a deliberate ploy as he was decent and could not be associated with any paramilitary organisation. It was purely to put fear and Terror through a whole community by striking at its centre.

We had just won the AI and had beaten Bellaghy in the Ulster final before Christmas 1996. There was a crew of us living in Belfast and we had close relationships on and off the field with a lot of the Bellaghy lads. It struck hard. I remember travelling home at the time and we regularly changed out pick up spots etc. Going to matches in Lurgan and that was always a concern as well. How the f**k was that normal?

Unfortunately we normalised it at the time and adopted

My dad handed me the book The Shankill butchers when it came out

Made me read it before I headed out that weekend, needless to say that put the willies up me for that period of heading out!

Absolutely horrible book. Really tough. I read the book called committee. Really opened my eyes as a teenager growing up.

Only policeman you trust is a dead one.

Is that book still available?

Yeah on Amazon

Quote from: Blowitupref on April 23, 2024, 09:26:30 PMAll too easy for Arsenal against Chelsea tonight, I didn't see the FA cup semi final but on this poor showing tonight how did Chelsea only lose 1-0 against Man City at the weekend?

Every game is different

Quote from: Blackandblue2 on April 22, 2024, 10:37:57 AMSo whats the chances this weekend? Anyone giving us a punchers chance?

I see the game isn't being televised? On BBc or Rte?
Has this every happened for a Ulster semi final before, why would all games including prelim be on and not the Semi final?

Is it expected to be 1 sided and not worth the viewing?

GAAGO are showing it
Where would you pick up the game in Belfast City Centre?
Nancy Mulligan's, Castle Street will have it.
Thanks!

Is that place not a total dive ?

Quote from: SaffronSports on April 22, 2024, 01:50:32 PMIt's all about that Carlow match. Ideally we don't want to lose in that manner again but we need to maintain McCarthy status.

It is but you can still go out and bust your balls for 70mins, that's the minimum expectation. Players have been training since November (officially),warm weather training camp, we are told how professional it is.

Nobody expected a victory but you will find it's not that easy to flick the switch when it comes to Carlos after some of the performances this year

We talk about closing the gap to Dublin & Wexford, they wouldn't have been beaten by 30+ yesterday.

Quote from: north_antrim_hound on April 22, 2024, 11:24:01 AMI was down yesterday, what a one sided miss match. Biggest disappointment was the work etihic as some players just didn't seem interest. Paddy Burke and Eoin Campbell were the only two even close to the standard. Some good players looked beat before we started.

Gleeson said as much, the players gave up very early on. By all accounts this is Gleesons last year and it seems to be fizzling out

Quote from: Capt Pat on April 21, 2024, 03:37:15 PMClare will never win an all Ireland without a half decent goal keeper. Quilligan letting in the second Limerick goal was a disater for Clare.

Yep have always had my doubts about him, he wasn't great for the first one either

The same old GAA Board problem of people not reading a post, I'm not talking about Brolly & MacKenna having the same position on issues. I am talking about someone who was relatively mainstream (MacKenna) who has been totally ostracised due to his ramblings, ranting and behaviour. I can see the same happening with Brolly

Quote from: tiempo on April 12, 2024, 02:40:20 PMLatest podcast was a bit ott in terms of GAA exceptionalism, GAA has its share of fraud, spivs, spoofers, and wrong'uns - Joe's experience seems akin to Tom Cruise involvement in Scientology

And why so much hate for Micky Harte - referred to as 'that man' in the latest episode, a bit much

I used to find Brolly really interesting, he actually seems to be becoming slightly unhinged.

I can easily see him totally ostracised in the media world and an Ewan MacKenna type character in a few years

For anyone who hasn't watched it, The People v OJ was a great ten parter

OJ: Made In America the five part documentary is great. Currently available on demand on Sky Documentaries
