Handy enough to set up Noel.

Had a security breech last year, got in contact with PayPal immediately and they had it sorted within 15mins, so I was happy enough.

A lot of places ask for it. Secure as secure can be. Other than that pay for all online purchases through Visa (Credit) as they'll stand over everything

Whilst the most widely used, Paypal also have relatively high charges which add up if you use it a lot.  NoChex is a cheaper option.

I know paypal cover you for fraudulent products on ebay but not sure if this applies if you are buying stuff from elsewhere or just forwarding a payment to someone.

Anyone know how long it should take for money transferred from your bank account to show in paypal?
I transferred a large sum last Thursday so I could buy a DSLR off ebay but it still hasn't shown in my Paypal account
Title: Re: PayPal
Post by: tyrone girl on July 27, 2010, 04:24:59 PM
Takes about 5-7 days i think depending on your bank account for the money to show in Paypal. You would have probably been quicker though just paying for it through Paypal - u dont need to have the money previously transferred in. They just take it from your bank account

when I buy something on eBay it gives me a pay now link in my account and I click it and pay with entering my paypal address. then papal automatically debts my account, I never need to transfer money to papal first.

Post by: tyrone girl on July 27, 2010, 04:33:20 PM
Yep thats how paypal works i think - any time i buy anything on any site through paypal cos its linked directly to my bank and debit card i buy it there and then with no need to transfer money

Really? That I didn't know.
Have you to set it up that way?

I think so but to be honest i think thats how it works in general. Go to your paypal account and check out that you are linked to your bank account - id presume u are - im linked to debit card and bank account. I think any time u buy anything it takes it straight from your bank. Thats the whole idea of it i think cos it keeps your debit card details / bank acc details from third parties - as in paypal is just the go between

Selling an item on Gumtree and the person interested in buying is wanting to pay via paypal.

Turns out i do have an account but know SFA on how to use it.

Where do i find my account details to send them so that they can make the payment??
Title: Re: PayPal

You should have an email from them surely? If you have a main email account just tell paypal you have forgotten your password and reset it. They can pay using your email address and then you can pay the money on to your own bank account.

If you can't find it reregister.

Oh i can log in alright but I thought I'd to send them some sort of account details for them to make the payment, but if all they need is the email address I've the paypal account registered to then that's OK.

done a search on the person looking to buy and they're scammers, same bullshit story;

Great! please consider it sold and take the ads down off ,i am buying it for my cousin. and i am read to pay your full asking price, i have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it,sadly i would not be able to come personally

to collect due to my hearing loss and me being in wheelchair.

I have a courier agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via PayPal today.

Where is the pick up location so that i can inform the courier agent about it now?

If I'd have given them my email address, which they already have via Gumtree how could they have scammed me or are they just nusciance wankers?

If you get the money via paypal then I am not sure. Generally speaking scammers don't use paypal.

That all sounds a bit dodgy alright.

Don't respond with address until you have the money in your account

Absolute scam johnnycool, the "courier" is a well known one. Was selling a car about five years ago on adverts.ie and the message was almost the exact same.

On another point, be aware that accepting payments via PayPal will carry a fee.
Title: Re: PayPal
Post by: Hound on July 27, 2020, 09:23:44 AM
Just read that one way to find out if it is a courier scam is to say to the purchaser that if he's sending a courier to collect your item that he just send the cash with the courier and not to bother with paypal. A genuine purchaser should have no problem with that.

Some scammers arrange a fake email from paypal saying the money is in your account but will take 3-5 days to show up. Or they cancel the paypal payment after collection.

You get a spoof email saying you have received money then you get an email saying you have been overpaid and need to pay some money back so you pay it back. Something along those lines. It's a lot of work to catch someone out and most people would see through it.

The point about electronic spam is that is doesn't cost anything to send it to loads of people, so as long as 0.001% of people are fooled then you are quids in.

That's not quite the same as spam though. It's more targeted.  In principle though I guess it's keep doing it until someone is caught out.

Called 'phishing'. Directly targeting a person via e-mail to provide sensitive/confidential information about themselves.

There seems to have been an increase in the amount of phishing of late.

A couple of people in my contacts have fallen foul to the Whatsapp scam.
You get a message from a contact on Whatsapp saying:
"Hello I'm sorry, I sent you a 6-digit code for SMS by error. Can you transfer it to me? It's urgent"
and at the same time you get a text message with the 6-digit code.
The code is actually the account retrieval details for your account. If you forward it, the phisher can access your account and contact all your contacts.

Another one that happened last night. I got a facebook messenger message from an acquaintance. Somebody I would know if I met them at home, and I would have been relatively friendly with approx 10 years ago, but not in any sort of contact now.
Conversation went like this

Other Person: Hi NBTD. How are you doing
Me: I'm good thanks, and you
OP: I'm getting along pretty well and I need a favor from you.
Me: I'll try
OP: I need to get an iTunes gift card for my Niece, It's her birthday but  I can't do this now because I'm currently traveling. Can you get it from any store around you? I'll pay back as soon as i am back.
Me: Which niece?
No response

I messaged a mutual friend to let her know she's been hacked.
It is pretty obvious but I can see how someone could be fooled by these kind of things

I should have added:

If you set up 2-step verification on your Whatsapp account, they can no longer access your account by getting the link.
In the app, go Settings>Account>Two-step verification

Barring getting them shutdown not sure what you can do. You could string them along and keep telling them you've upped the price or something. Stringing them along and getting them reported for fraud about the best you can do. If you get the website they're sending you(i.e. the paypal spoof which you will most likely get) then get domain details etc and get it shut down.

What are you selling -  the family jewels?  ;D    is the stuff that interesting for them?
I though the scam was that you the seller will receive an email saying that the buyer has sent you too much money and can you return the difference to them.
And you also promptly receive a fake paypal email  claiming  the said (over) payment has arrrived to your Paypal account.

They're buying from me, not the other way round..

Only a total moron would fall for that!

Selling a double buggy, anyone interested in it?

Should set up a buy and sell section on here.

Great! please consider it sold and take the ads down off ,i am buying it for my cousin. and i am read to pay your full asking price, i have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it,sadly i would not be able to come personally

to collect due to my hearing loss and me being in wheelchair.

I have a courier agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via PayPal today.

Where is the pick up location so that i can inform the courier agent about it now?

Thanks,
send me the long number on your credit card, the expiry date and also the security code on the back and I'll get it sent to you asap.

It's a lovely yolk, can turn on a sixpence and folds into the size of a cornflakes box, just like an armalite.....

I've always found it to be more or less instant.

It's usually instant, though I find when I pay someone on PayPal it can take 3/4 days to come out of my bank account

It was refused 4 times. AIB blamed PayPal. PayPal blamed AIB. I sent it to my gf's PayPal in the end. She transferred it to her bank and then to me. Long way of doing it but it's done. Cheers guys
