Woman has sight restored after 46 years of blindness
FOR 46 years, Jenny O'Connell was afraid to hope her sight could be restored but yesterday she saw her family for the first time. Doctors at a Dublin hospital partially restored her vision with a rare treatment.
Ms O'Connell from Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, lost her vision at the age of 11. After a complex procedure to insert an artificial cornea at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, she was yesterday able to see again with her right eye.
"What a shock. I just can't believe it actually happened . . . it's all my dreams together, but at the same time I wasn't hoping for it, you know. I was afraid to."
Ms O'Connell, who had never seen her husband Seán or her son and daughter before, was resting in hospital last night after being visited by family members.
"I've never seen what Michael and Martina looks like, any of my family, or my husband," she told RTÉ news yesterday.
The event was tinged with added poignancy by the fact that Ms O'Connell's husband had lost his sight in recent years due to diabetes.
The first person Ms O'Connell saw was her consultant ophthalmologist William Power, who said the treatment, known as Boston keratoprosthesis, was rare in Ireland.
"In layman's terms it's an artificial plastic window that goes into a person's cornea," he said.
Mr Power said the custom-made device had been inserted into Ms O'Connell's eye four weeks ago and covered over with a flap of skin, which was removed yesterday.
"We're the only centre in the country doing it. In the last five or six years we've put in about 13 but Jenny is quite unusual in terms of being without vision for so long."
Mr Power said that before treatment, Ms O'Connell was only "vaguely aware" of an extremely bright light being shone in front of her right eye, and her left eye was already irreparably damaged.
But yesterday she was able to read numbers and letters on a chart when the bandage was removed two hours after the final stage of the surgery.
Ms O'Connell lost her sight following a bad reaction to a medicine, which lead to a very rare condition known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. It was the morning of her sister's birthday party, she recalled.
"I wasn't feeling well and daddy called me in, came into me and said to me was I not getting up. So I asked him to put the light on and I realised he said he had the light on, so we realised it wasn't – I couldn't see."

Officers fined for dropping litter from police car
By Alan Erwin
Two police officers have been convicted of throwing litter from their staff car into a Co Antrim parking area.
One of them was also found guilty of flouting smoking laws by lighting up in a work vehicle before tossing his cigarette butt out the window.
Imposing fines on Constables Kim McKee and Donal Adams, District Judge Amanda Henderson said: "I'm aware of the consequences these convictions may have on other areas of your professional lives."
Ms McKee and Mr Adams, whose ages were not disclosed and with addresses given as care of Newtownabbey PSNI station, were prosecuted over an incident at Sixmilewater car park, Ballyclare, in May 2008.
Both accepted being there drinking tea and coffee and eating cookies from a Subway food outlet during a break while on duty. But they denied allegations that a steaming tea bag and milk carton was thrown from the police car.
Mr Adams, a smoker, also rejected witness claims that he took a puff from a cigarette before discarding it out the driver's side window.
The case against them was based on evidence supplied by a litter warden and worker for Newtownabbey Borough Council. Mr Adams was given an extra £100 penalty for smoking in a smoke-free place, namely a work vehicle.
The officers were also both ordered to pay £100 in costs after Mr Irvine argued the case had been "vigorously contested by both defendants at every turn".

Just after watching Question Time on the BBC. David Dimbley told Margaret Beckett that she was fingered by the Daily Mail. She blushed and the audience broke out in fits of laugher :D
A Northumberland millionaire is selling his £16m country estate and giving every penny of the proceeds to charity.
Brian Burnie is open to offers for the Doxford Hall Hotel and its 10 acre estate near Alnwick.
He hopes to use the profits from the sale to establish and pay for a Macmillan cancer nurse for north Northumberland.
The 64-year-old also hopes to pay for a set of custom-made vehicles to take cancer patients to and from hospitals.
Mr Burnie said: "We live in a me, me, me society and it has always been important to me to think of others.
"We can all do something by leaving money to charity when we die, but why don't we do something while we are still living?"
Writing out the cheque is the easy bit - its actually getting off your jacket and helping the cause you want to support that is the hard part
Brian Burnie
Father-of-three Mr Burnie said he and his wife Shirley - a breast cancer survivor - would live on their private pension when the estate was sold.
He said: "We won't exactly be selling the Big Issue but we will be downsizing.
"I've done the stately home bit - the bricks and mortar - but I've always been a people person.
"To be able to do something to help people has a much bigger return than any financial gain."
The Newcastle-born millionaire joked he "went to school in Heaton and not Eton".
'Millionaires in kindness'
He said: "You are what your parents are and you should never forget your roots - we were millionaires in kindness, not money.
"Writing out the cheque is the easy bit - it's actually getting off your jacket and helping the cause you want to support that is the hard part."
Mr Burnie began his working life as a 15-year-old grocery delivery boy before beginning a student apprenticeship for builders John Laing.
He progressed to become a trained engineer before moving into management - firstly in the building industry then in petrochemicals.
In 1979, Mr Burnie and a partner started investment company Kelburn Holdings in Newcastle before later moving into recruitment.
Brightly coloured vehicles
This all led to Mr Burnie and his wife buying Doxford Hall from Northumberland County Council in 1993.
It is now a 25-bedroom hotel and spa complex which also hosts conferences and weddings.
Mr Burnie said he will call the transport service Daft As A Brush and will use brightly coloured vehicles.
Mr and Mrs Burnie have been contributing to charity for the last 40 years, supporting various cancer charities, inviting war veterans to their home for meals and opening their door to the less fortunate on Christmas Day.
A spokeswoman for Macmillan Cancer Trust said: "We are hoping to meet with Mr Burnie next week to discuss his plans and look forward to working with him to help people affected by cancer in Northumberland."

If I was the shopkeeper I'd tell him to stick his voucher up his hole if he produced that.
I would have done what the shopkeeper done and if and if it was me who won the money I'd give the shopkeeper half.
Give him fcuk all. At the end of the day the guy bought the ticket fairly and it would have been theft if he didn't hand it over.

Jees i was only suggesting without thinking, of course if it happened me i give alot of consideration probably couple a grand but 10% is going a bit far,
Either way the shopkeeper deserves something for sure and we all agree on that. Great story lets hope he gets a nd reward and more imortantly is happy with it.

He's not being rewarded for being honest, he's also being rewarded for conducting a search to find who bought the ticket. He could have put it in the bin not knowing or he could have kept it himself, fact is, yer man would not have a penny if it wasnt for the shopkeeper.

He did the right thing, big deal. He couldn't have kept it himself, because he would have knowing claimed it illegally. It's a straight cut case of theft in my eyes and there are a few cases in England which back up my views, not sure about the South.
If you read the previous post and what he is supposed to have been saying in the paper, the "shopkeepers dream was to own one of those holiday motorhomes", seems to me he's hinting at something and expecting a little cut ::)
QuoteIf you read the previous post and what he is supposed to have been saying in the paper, the "shopkeepers dream was to own one of those holiday motorhomes", seems to me he's hinting at something and expecting a little cut
I havent seen the article so I dont know what context that was reported, if the shopkeeper said it, was asked by the paper or asked by the man who won the money.
You might give him nothing, I'd give him half because without his honesty and effort of finding me I'd have won none of it.
I'd definitely give the shopkeeper something, around 10% or so of the winnings.
It's not as if the shopkeeper found a suitcase full of money, he couldn't have kept the ticket and cashed it in anyway.

Me neither and I'm basing what I say on that post. Also I didn't say I would offer nothing but my gripe is that it is almost expected of the guy/me/yourself to reward someone for doing the right thing. Give him nothing a wait and see the usual suspects give out; I reckon the shopkeeper too will be in the paper crying about it too.
Seemingly he's buying the shopkeeper a camper van worth 40k.
would def have to hand it in..wouldnt want to but u couldnt have luck with stolen money..
I'd hand it in too. You'd get nothing but bad cess for using someone else's luck.
On whether he'd have gotten away with it or not, of course he would have. It was a €4 quick pick that the customer left on the counter. Unless he's got photographic memory, assuming he even glanced at the ticket, he'd never have known it was 'his' numbers.
It wouldn't have been signed or anything like that, so there'd be no reason for the customer to challenge it, and the shopkeeper could have stayed schtum.
I'm glad he didn't, and I'm glad he's getting a bit of a reward, but I'm a bit uneasy about how the winner came to know that it was his dream to own a camper van.
Still, winners all around I'd say. A Good news story, but it's actually a bit sad that it's newsworthy at all, you'd like to think most people would do the right thing.
Was reading in magazine at the wknd there that some english couple found a ticket for the daily play lotto or something like that and apparently she went to hand it back to the cashier who told her to keep it (cashier denies this).
Anyway they cashed it in for £30,000 and then the police were directed to their door and they were prosecuted for fraud. They had £15,000 of it spent and the remaining £15,000 is frozen in their account until end of september until the court hearing. Apparently the woman who lost it religously kept a note of her numbers and when they came up and she realised she had no ticket she contacted camelot and they worked from there.

Aye, but that bit in bold is the difference. If I knew I bought a ticket, and knew my numbers, I'd be on to the shop as well, looking at CCTV etc.
But if I had a quickpick, and couldn't find it later on, I'd just assume I lost it, and wouldn't have a clue the numbers came up.
Yep id be the same. They had big time financial worries and when they found a ticket for 30k suppose temptation got the better of them.
Lets be honest here, if you found a ticket that had any money on it, be it a tenner or ten million, I'd be laughin all the way to the bank/pub. Finders keepers, losers weepers. People say you might have bad luck, nonsense - you make your own luck in life!
On a similar vein there was a polish lad working on our site and put an accumulator on the football a few months ago. He hadnt a clue what to do so one of the other lads went with him to the bookies to give him a handy. It was only a wee bet ( cant remember but something like a fiver) The bet came up and he won around 600k! He goes back to poland and buys himself and his family ( who are still living in poland) a swanky new house with a pool etc. He lands back to work and gives the guy who helped him 30k.
Incidently he said he had to leave leave poland cause the polish mafia were after him but i dont know if he brought the family with him.

Congratulations, stpauls.
When we brought our first lad home, he woke at 2 a.m., screaming. We quickly deduced (I have no idea how) that constipation was the problem, but we had no idea what to do about it. So we called the hospital he had left only hours previously. It seemed to be the same logic as calling the shop when you get your washing machine home and there's a problem with it. He's not working - how do we fix him?
For the record, the solution was a tiny soap suppository - worked within five minutes.

My finacee gave birth to our first child at half one today. A wee boy called Dylan! He's a little beauty, can't get over it.
I have a new found respect for women after that. She gave birth using only gas and air, unreal stuff. I wouldn't be fit for half of it!
So watch out championship 2022, there could be a player of the year from Tyrone named Dylan. Remember the name ;)
Mighty Stuff OG.

Hitting the sack now after a mad day. Cheers for all the good wishes, I'm going to have plenty of fun over the coming weeks, months and years.
P.S. There is truely nothing as moving and emotional as the birth of your child. I never realised it was possible to experience as many emotions in such a short time as I did today. It really is a miracle.

You will have tough days ahead of you and do not believe anyone who tells you it gets easier as they grow up, these people are liars. My four year olds asthma kept me up all Saturday night, I finally got to bed at 7.00am and slept for 2 hours, dragged myself out of the bed to cook him an omelette as he was poorly, he happily lashed into it, only to start coughing,he turned to me as he started to gag, I reached out cupping my hands together and he puked into them. But those moments will always be surpassed by many many more brighter ones.
Get some sleep.
Good work OG - congrats.
I don't know if things get easier as they get older. I think you just become immune to it. I don't remember what a full nights sleep feels like. I got 5 hours straight there on Tuesday Night and woke up feeling great. There will be ups and downs but I have never felt more joy in my life.
For me personally i love watching my Da interact with my Son. Great to see the lessons passed down and watch my Da act like a young fella again.
Enjoy every minute

It's a girl, 8 pounds 6 and a little bruiser to boot. Came out facing the ceiling so not a sign of difficult days to come I hope. Week early as well, reckon she wanted to be out for the U21 final in Thurles tomorrow but Mrs. Croí is refusing to sign the release form. The little one will have to wait for the Gerry Reilly final next Wednesday to make her debut in the maroon and white babygro. Terrified of leaving her in behind reception.
Congrats, Croí.
Bye bye sleep for the foreseeable future but if there is ever an acceptable reason for being woken during the night, your own flesh and blood is it.
Having said that it might be a good way to see the Rugby World Cup.

Would that not just send him back asleep again?
As they would say down in Wexford, quare sound lads on here. Home today and settling in well to the sleeping, eating and shitting (as is the young one). She was disappointed to hear the U21's came up short and is doubly psyched up for the U16's on Wednesday.
Hardy, that's the best bit of advice I've heard since I was advised to stay away from the business end.
Good man Croí, congrats to all, our escapades at the golf is a good example of what it's like trying to look after the kids in the middle of the night ;)

A Dutch cyclist who has represented her country at the Paralympics could be set to compete in the able-bodied event after an amazing incident saw her regain the use of her legs.
The Independent reports that Monique van der Vorst was paralysed from the waist down and had been confined to a wheelchair for 13 years.
She won two silver medals at the Paralympics by powering a bike with her hands but last year she was knocked off her bike in a crash.
What could have led to a serious injury actually did the opposite. Van der Vorst started to feel her feet tingle and within months she was able to walk.
Her recovery was so rapid that she started competing on a regular bicycle - then progressed to a point that has seen her earn one of just 11 places in a top women's professional cycling team.

Thanks BD and well done to yourself and your OH. Yeah, juggling two childer should be 'fun', another reason to have the gaaboard meet before June.
My good news.
Had to take the dog to the vet (that's not the good news).
It cost me about £200 (that's not the good news).
Tesco pet insurance sent me a cheque to cover it (that's a bit of good news).
Then I lost the cheque. I searched high and low, left and right, in and out, over and under, every room in the house, every compartment of my laptop bag, every drawer at my desk in work, and finally emptied two very large recycling bags (much to the entertainment of my work colleagues) but to no avail.
Then this morning I found it in a pocket of my other jacket. Woo-hoo, good news!
Typical. Always in the last place you look.

EU agrees to end decades of overfishing
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/05c56eba-c8fa-11e2-bb56-00144feab7de.html
European fleets will have to end overfishing by the end of the decade and substantially abandon the practice of discarding after the EU agreed a sweeping overhaul of its troubled fisheries policy.
The agreement – between representatives from the European Commission, the parliament and member states – came shortly after 3am on Thursday morning following an all-night bargaining session that was, itself, preceded by more than a year of negotiations.
Behind the curve on this one, great news AZ, well apart from the Tipperary angle. :P
On the run in ourselves, better not make any moves tomorrow.
Was up in the bathroom there now and I heard a someone shouting, didn't hear it clearly with the wind and the rain but heard something, came downstairs and went out into the garden heard it again and it was a definite cry for help coming from a house which backed on to our neighbours house but I still couldn't see what was up.
Was worried that it was my neighbour who is 9 months pregnant!! Didn't want to deal with that one, eventually I got a look into the other back garden and there was an old man in his late 80's lying where he fell, in the rain and muddy grass, I bounced over the fence like a Gisele and ran over to him, the old boy had been lying there for 30 minutes FFS shivering and in a bit of discomfort but he seem as if legs and hip were fine. Went into his house and got a blanket to throw round him to keep him warm while I went to get help from his son in-law who lived next door (he was in his late 60's!!) he was a ton weight managed to get him up and onto his bed.
Worries me had I not came home from the shop and went up stairs would anybody hear his calls or if they did would they have bothered to do anything!! The son in law was fast asleep so he couldn't hear him.

Was well into his 80's, I'd to throw his quilt round him, it was cover in mud and soaking after a second, rain pissing down ffs. His son in law was late sixties and didn't move well also, ya wonder how we'll end up when (if) we hit that age, can't be great.

My missus gave birth to our 3rd child in Altnagelvin last night, our first wee girl! All going great so far, however, the next few weeks will be interesting as our two boys are only 1 and 2! Had finally got back into the routine of getting 6-7 hours sleep a night, I can't see that happening too much over these next few months.
Congrats.
You may tie a knot in it for a few years....
Comhghairdeas OG!

Congratulations - its 3 months now since we had our wee fella and he's doing great. Not sure how we'd have coped had we another two running around though! Best of luck with it.
Congrats OG. Enjoy the day or two honeymoon period before they come home
Our wee girl was by far our easiest baby so you should be grand.
As ye know I wouldn't recommend 4 ;)
Ahh omagh I have 3 boys, a 4yr old a 2yr old and a new born at 12 weeks. I had got use to handling the two first boys but the 3rd one just throws everything out the door. I cant remember the last full nites sleep I had.
Cheers lads. Will be some craic over the coming months but we're lucky that both our lads sleep 12 hours a night and would sleep through an earthquake so hopefully (down on my knees begging!) that continues.
Great stuff OG. There's a bit of a baby boom on at the moment apparently. Our little lady is a month old today, and Croi has had great news himself I think....

Ah congrats OG, great to hear. The lucky girl will have two big brothers to look after her then.
You're all making me broody on here. If I have to bring my wedding forward from next summer, you'll know why...
Congratulations.
Oh, by the way ...

Jaysus I'm stressed enough as it is here without that!
Think you're right AZ, in my small estate in Loughmacrory (a very small wee place) there have been at least 10 babies born in the past year and by the looks of some of the other women there could be a few more on the way. Although I once congratulated a woman I kind of knew on her recent pregnancy and it turned out she was just a bit fat, yikes. That was a tricky one.
It's certainly the most exhausting gig out there
Congrats omagh gael
Congrats to you and your wife, OG. Thank goodness you got the girl otherwise you could get going at it for years.
Well done OG.

Aye, we had a bouncing baby girl there a couple of weeks ago. Bouncing as in wanting to be fed the whole time. Her two year old sister is taking well to her and aiming the tantrums in my direction. Knot is firmly tired and am already pestering herself that we need a spa break, something I've always resisted. Half day off in Croker on Sun, I'll be the fella slumped over the table in the Premium level.
Congrats and best wishes to all recent fathers out there (you'll need it) :P

Congrats Croí!
Yes, Croi, congrats. There appears to be a period of fecundity on the bord, and I don't mean the "feck it" variety of some Mayo supporters when they arrive at Croke Park.
Sorry that you have to endure that feeding furor, but I have to attribute at least part of that to your name, "croi." For next few months you might think of changing your name to "Snore na hEireann" or "Armagh Fan na hEireann." Either one, in the near future, may induce a soothing silence.
Good luck to you, your wife and the little one.
Congrats Croi.
Congrats Croi! Hope all goes well.
A shout out for Laois lad and Mrs Laois lad.
Proud parents of a new babby boy born at 9.24 this morning.
Hope young Luis is doing well. Ditto ma and da.
Congrats Laois Lad. Best of luck.
Poor Luis. I feel for him ;D
Congrats to Mrs and Mrs Laoislad and Laoislad Jr. on the new arrival.
A mate received a new liver after being on the list for a considerable period.

Another Liverpool supporter, suppose he'll grow up during a successful period of dominance!!
Anyway, I'm sure he'll have him hurling so that's not too bad, well done to Mr and Mrs Laoislad!!

Less time for the running now.
Good Man, and contratulations to the family!
Congratulations Laoislad.
Well that was a fairly infertile period in the boards history, should pick up in another 8 and a half months due to Robbie Brady's antics.
Son and heir to my debts arrived recently, delighted I finally have someone I can grab on Sunday morning and say that he wants to be taken to a match.

Been a while since anyone posted in the good news thread! Thought this might be a good place for this story.
A brother of Neil and Eamon McGee is being hailed after going in to the water to rescue a woman from the Swilly river in Letterkenny. He's a Garda in the town.
Think he still lines out for Gaoth Dobhair as well.

Fair play to him, decent skin. Pretty sure he still plays ball, thats him pictured beside Gaoth Dobhair Garda Station close to the large industrial estate.

That might be true if it wasn't for the fact that he spent most of his time around midfield.
