Title: Clash of the Titans - Meath vs Offaly May 12th
Post by: thejuice on April 17, 2019, 08:57:48 PM
Three weeks to go till the big one.

Just trying to think when we last met in the championship, must have been back in 2011 (I think) in Portlaoise. Only Mickey Burke still in the team from that year. I remember his being caught out of position and Offaly getting in for a goal. We won anyway but wasn't a great year for us.

This game used to be big enough to be played in Croker but not these days but hopefully our new found optimism will bring out a crowd at home. We really targeted the league and were by some accounts championship fit since January. How that will stand to us in May I'm not sure as there's a lot of county football been played already and club championship already underway. I'd like to think we'd have enough to win this one but we've been poor the last two years and Offaly do like to scupper our plans from time to time (1997 and 2000 stick in the memory).

We play Roscommon in a challenge game on the 28th before then which might be a good test of where we stand.

Stroll down memory lane here. I think I was at all these games certainly the last 4.

Leinster semi 1989

1995

Meath has some team on paper that day but half of them were on the way out.

1997

The Malone and Claffey show.

Can't find video of the 2000 or 2011 games.

<Yawn>
Doesn't anyone, from either county, give a f**k anymore about their respective teams.
How the mighty have fallen!  ;D

I most certainly care. Things are going well so I believe, with a recent win over a division two team in a high scoring game.

I certainly care. My caring about this team is not dependent on our success or lack of it. In fact the worse we are the more I end up caring. Seems like my fellow Meath men on this board have vacated this place though I wouldn't suggest that means they are no longer following the team.

Of course that's not to avoid acknowledging the fact that we have fallen behind our neighbours but that's hardly news to anyone. We are improving but it remains to be seen if we can remain on an upward trajectory after the league.

Maybe it's time to remove Dublin from Leinster.
The others would have a grand competition among themselves.

To be honest, I wasn't fond of his initial appointment. I thought he was solely there for the money. Ultimately it's a results based business. The results have just not gone our way in a number of matches. However, we did manage to survive, just, like the two years before. But the two years before, we had better teams. Compared to last year, we're short about half of the panel between retirements and non-commitment, such as travel. The lads seem to be happy with training and it's supposed to be hard, so we can't be too disappointed. I'd really love to see the best club footballers in Offaly, who were asked in playing for Offaly under Maughan. Que Sera Sera.

Plenty of lads dropped off our panel over the last two years as Andy upped the standards required in terms of fitness and commitment. Plenty of lads walked away, most famously Paddy O'Rourke who was vocal about how it was pointless but we seem to be going in the right direction now in Andy's third year. Takes time for these things to work out.

We play Roscommon today at 3:30 for the reopening of my old clubs pitch in Ardcath. Get down there if you can.

I heard that we're playing Cavan in the next couple of weeks up there. Have played two challenges in recent weeks, resulting in two wins. This game will be closer than many people think.

Going by reports on stolen sheep we were 5 up near the end and like the Kildare game conceded 2 soft late goals .

Spoke to someone who was there. Not championship intensity by any means. Our team was a mix of 2nd and 3rd choice players if you could count Graham Reilly among those since he didn't start a league game. Still a good run out and a great occasion for the club.

I was at the game. Enjoyable and entertaing but not too serious at the same time. Typical pre- season stuff.  I was there to meet a couple of old friends from my time living in Bective over 25 years ago so I wasn't took fussed about the programme details or individuals's names etc. Still,  very enjoyable afternoon. Good turnout and the pitch looks top class.

Preview of the game from a Meath perspective.

We played Kerry in the challenge game at the weekend. 3-18 to 0-16 to Kerry. Not sure if the line ups but pretty sure there were 1st choice players on both sides from the list of scorers I've seen.

Was talking to someone connected with the Meath camp and they were a bit surprised at how much of a clear gap in quality there was between themselves and Kerry.
The vibe I got was that expectations in the camp had gotten a slight bit ahead of where Meath are after the league campaign and the main thing the Meath squad took away from the game was that they need to stay in Division 1 long-term if they want to make any serious progress.
On Kerry's chances of Sam they said the big thing is getting enough ball to their forwards.
Kerry had Clifford, Geaney and JOD on the pitch at the same time for a long stretch and they were in serious form - JOD especially.
However they reckoned that teams will seriously target Kerry around the midfield area to cut off supply like Mayo did in the league final.

From what i seen of Meath in the league final they still have major issues in defence and that Kerry forward line will score for fun against any disorganized defence.

Yeah I don't know how anyone might think we've closed the gap that significantly with the top 3 teams. I think our defense is ok though they do have shakey periods but our forward line aren't going to trouble the top teams enough to beat them. Looking at Div 1 it's hard to see us pick up many points without a bit more talent coming into the squad. Still think reaching a Leinster final is achievable but I don't see it as inevitable at all. The experts on the RTE website have nearly all tipped us to reach the last 8. I'm definitely not that confident but we could do it with a favorable draw.

Is that Offaly's strongest available side, any injuries or better players left on the bench?

In terms of what's in there, more or less the strongest. Joey O'Connor is struggling with an injury, while I feel that Paul McConway should be in defence, with Mangan taken out. I'd like to see Peter Cunningham at centre forward.

In terms of footballers in the county, probably not. I know of a good few players asked in that either dropped out, due to work commitments, or whatever, or just would not go in.
That being said, it's not a bad side at all. As strong as we could hope for, I suppose.

McConway and O'Connor would be the best players on the bench, both defenders, although Joey can bomb forward. Whether he's even fit or not, I don't know.
Shane Tierney in the forwards, I suppose. In reality he's just too small and not really up to it physically. I can imagine a Meath lad giving him a nice welcome if he arrives onto the pitch.

Mad the way the mindset of a Gaelic football supporter works , there was a time I despised Meath but now I'd love to see the back knocking lumps out of Dublin ,perhaps it's a gra for tradition or just aul nostalgic rubbish I dunno . Best of luck to both teams , be interesting to see if maughan is learning as he goes along too .

Meath:

Andrew Colgan;

Seamus Lavin, Conor McGill, Shane Gallagher;
James McEntee, Donal Keogan, Gavin McCoy;

Bryan Menton, Shane McEntee;

Cillian O'Sullivan, Bryan McMahon, Ben Brennan,
Barry Dardis, Michael Newman, Thomas O'Reilly.

Same as the league final. I'd have liked to see Graham Reilly start but I guess we'll keep him in reserve as we've been doing in the league. I guess Pauric Harnan still isn't fit enough yet either hence McCoy getting the nod.

Well I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from today. I don't think we were at full tilt but we ground out a result when we needed to. Unlike the last two years in Leinster we got the win despite a below par performance. I think there's more in this team and I expect them to improve the next day out.  We had a tough game today that will stand to them. At least it wasn't a complete one sided affair. Offaly never gave up and they'll be a tough draw for anyone in the qualifiers.
