Title: What was the best goal scored in an All Ireland final?
Post by: BennyCake on April 08, 2020, 04:41:15 PM
Not enough football talk on here, so let's get talking about it again.

What was the best goal scored in an All Ireland final?

I don't mean in terms of timing, importance, history etc.... I just mean, as a thing of beauty.

For me, it's hard to decide between Michael Murphy v Mayo in 2012, and John O'Driscoll v Derry in 1993.

Murphy's is hard to beat. Great pass from Lacey (apparently Donegal had been rehearsing dropping those diagonal balls into Murphy between the 14 and 21 yard lines in the build-up to the final so that he would have space once he won the ball) and what can you say about the catch and finish?

Oisin McConville in 2002 was nicely constructed.

Leaving aside the little nudge, Seamus Darby, given the circumstances and the finish.

Mugsy versus Dublin has to be in the top 3

Still hard to beat Murphy though-the power in the shot was incredible

My favourite
Only square inch of the goal he could have found and he found it
Mugsy catch made it
Not a goal you see that often anymore
High ball in full forward catches it lays it off forward scores

And also off his weaker side, defender diving in front of him, goalkeeper to beat, the only place he could have put it and he had the composure to roll it in. It was sublime - not forgetting the great ball by Jordan and set up by Mulligan.

He got an absolute gem of a point from the sideline in the second half too.

It was some way to sign off from the greatest ever.

Din Joe Crowley scored a brilliant goal for Kerry in the 1970 final v Meath. Great solo run and cracking finish.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4NaTMBPHnE

Seán O'Neill scored a classy goal in the 1968 final. Great coolness

Murt Connor's goal for Offaly at a vital time in 71 final wasn't bad either. Out in front of defender, catch ball, swivel and bury it. I'm sure older Biffos still relish it.

It was a well taken goal alright, but the pass in made it.
However, I think Seamus Downey's goal in the same game was unreal. He was running towards goal with the ball coming over his head, he gets a fist to it beating a defender and a the keeper. The fact that it led to Derry's first and only AI title just adds weight to the importance of that goal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3nX-rboJf4

Maybe I'm biased though.

Recent, but Eoin Murchans goal is worth a mention in this.

Stuff dreams are made of to sprint down middle of pitch and clip it into corner with outside of the boot.

He should have been hauled down....but, none the less.  Excellent goal and really set the Dubs on the road that day.

In fairness the lad took so many illegal steps. A bit like Con O'Callaghan's first v Mayo in 2017.

Has there ever been a modern inter-county game where a referee has disallowed a goal for steps?

Declan Meehan for me too. From memory they were under pressure in the corner on their own end line and moved the ball over the length of the pitch and ended with a brilliant finish.

I know it's irrelevant for this thread, but I recall a brilliant Donegal goal in a defeat to Dublin, in Croke Park, in recent years. Donegal were well beat on the night (I think it was a Saturday evening fixture) and I always thought the goal got subsequently overlooked.

No doubt Darby's is the most famous/important.

Murphy's goal was a brilliant full forwards goal, direct ball into a 1v1 contest on the edge of the square, the catch and power behind it.

But gooch in 2004 was something else, similar to Murphy, he had to win the 1v1 but had to take on his man, he had a lot more to do I thought than Murphy and gets my vote

Darby won a 1v1 on the wettest day at Croke against the best team, going for five in a row from a ball kicked in by the fullback (who was immense that day) and turn and put the ball into the roof of the net in the dying minutes of the game to win an historic All Ireland!

I suppose it depends on what you like, Murphys goal and The Gooch's both very good but this one from Darby just meant more (to me)

Jimmy Keaveney's early goal against Armagh in 1977 from under the Cusack Stand. It set the scene for the rest of the game.
