General discussion / Passport question
May 26, 2016, 11:19:16 PM
I'm filling on my passport renewal form and there's a space for a PPSN. I live the north so only have a National Insurance Number. I can't remember what I put down the last time - it was 10 years ago! Not sure what and can't get through on the phone to the passport office.

Anyone know how to watch championship matches online? RTE site doesn't seem to be working.

I'm heading down to a christening in Co Clare in a couple of weeks with the family (wife and two young kids).
Anyone know of any good B&Bs or hotels in the area. Looking for somewhere cheap, but decent enough to bring the kids. The christening is in Clonlara, so pretty close to Limerick city.

I'm not interested in getting an eternal debate here, but could any history buffs recommend a good book on 20th century Irish history?

General discussion / Teorainn ar TG4/BBC NI
November 18, 2009, 03:43:13 PM
Had this Sky plussed from last Wednesday and only round to watching it last night. Seems a fascinating series about the Border Commission and how border was set up in the early 1920s - which areas were in the south or north and how the respective minority communities (northern nationalists and 'southern' protestants) reacted to it. It also has a few human interest angles and as well  speaking to various historians talks to people like Joe Kernan, Jarlath Burns and people whose family homes were along the border.

Second part is on TG4 tonight and it's also been shown on BBC NI, although not too sure of the day or times.

Anyone else see it?

Despite the current economic gloom, Sainsbury's has said it had it's best ever Christmas.
I am fully convinced this 90% down to it's Newry store, I think I saw car regs from every county in Ireland in the car park over Christmas.

General discussion / Krakow

Heading over to Krakow next week. Would be keen to know if anyone has been and what they made of it? What's good and what should be avoided. What are the prices like, ie food, drink etc.

General discussion / 11th night bonfires
June 20, 2007, 11:03:19 AM
Purely by chance, I was listening to Nolan on Radio Ulster this morning and there was this guy from the country complaining that he had been told by the DOE that he could not burn his own bushes because of some environmental law. Anyway, his gripe was that while he was told this, 100s of bonfires were being built and would be lit on the 11th night. Cue a string of callers (including an elected counciller Pauline Armitage? I think) to come on and tell him to 'wind his neck in' and say that if he wants to burn anything, he can burn it on the 11th night. The poor guy was getting more and more frustrated that nobody got his point. Of course, the useless lump of lard Nolan did nothing to help the guy and let the pack of wolves loose on him.

Near where I live in Belfast, there is an unsightly stack which has been getting built since about Easter. I know bonfires are part of Protestant tradition and all that, but having them in housing estates is wrong. The authorities do next to nothing to stop these fires which invariably encourage people to dump any oul shite at the side of the road. And then whenever anybody raises a legitmate point about the safety of them, they're attacking Protestant culture. It's a joke. What's cultural about having a fire in the middle of your street.
