Great read at lunchtime this and something I never heard of. Maybe some of the Waterford posters would have heard of it.

Seems amazing that the truth never came out and how the Garda investigated the matter. Great reflection of Irish rural life at the time involving a lot of the main pillars of society at the time.

Oh yes. It really is verboten to discuss it in Stradbally (home of Brick Walsh) to this day. You couldn't make it up.

Did ye ever read of the Murder at Marlhill, New Inn in Tipp? Strange story as well, except a man hanged for it, Harry Gleeson. He was pardoned last year, but it's a fascinating story.

Was thinking you'd have knowledge of this.

According to local whispers is it as happened in the story with the teacher and your other man committing the act but it never been proven and no one will ever talk of it. All alleged of course.

The bottom line is that we have no way of knowing. It seems improbable, but the people who knew what happened kept schtum and they are all dead now. At this remove it may seem like a curiosity, but the misery for the Griffin family was all too real.

"O'Mara saw this as grotesque and unnecessary, but his protestations only enraged O'Duffy further and caused him to threaten O'Mara with a transfer to Donegal."
