GAA Discussion / Re: Reserve's or B's??
January 09, 2007, 04:38:56 PM
The stabdard differs across different counties.

It works like this in Derry as Far as I know

Senior Championship
Senior Reserve Championship (Senior Football Club's B Team)
Intermediate
Intermediate Reserve Championship (Intermediate Club's B Team)
Junior Championship
3rds Championship (Any club that can field a 3rd team are here although they used to play in the Junior C'ship and I think most play in the Junior league anyway)

GAA Discussion / Re: Paddy Heaney of the irish news!
December 07, 2006, 05:33:31 PM
As someone said before that's a crock o' shit reitoir. You'll read some Gulpin like yourself in Off the fence complaining about it next week. It has happned a few ties I might add and goes along the lines of "Paddy Heany put a picture of the wrong Michael Hasson in... he's a disgrace and should apologise" and the reply is "Sorry but journalists write articles, they have nothing to do with pictures, headlines or even thos squote boxes around the outside of the article.... yes the IN is at fault but do not blame this on Paddy Heaney"

WTF do you boys know about the journalism industry anyway? This is the way it's done for every Newspaper so wind yuor neck in and blame the right people rather than standing on your high horse "I wrote it therefore I'd stand over it" wise up!!!

As for Heaney, I've had to miss out on the IN for the last few months but I usually find his articles particularly on the club scene very humourous and interesting and judging by most here he definitely strikes a chord with your normal club footballers. In fairness the articles aren't as good as they once were but they are as good an opinion piece as you'll find on the GAA at any time of year.

GAA Discussion / Re: Eric Millar
December 06, 2006, 06:39:52 PM
Played with Eric a few times last year for the Boden. It was unfortunate that he came in so late last year because he really didn't have the skills mastered when it came to championship and it cost us in the end when he missed an open goal. I wouldn't blame him for that though.

He is a big lad... not the most mobile and the last time I saw himi his skill level had dropped and he takes a long time to wind up a kick (He gives it some wellie though). All in all I can't see him playing for Dublin as it would require a lot of one on one training and even then would he really be better than what they have already? My own feeling is that Dublin struggle in defence and their attack is one of the most dangerous in Ireland when they get the ball. Give Eric a full season though and he could cause a stir in the CLub Championship.

General discussion / Re: THINGS THAT P##S ME OFF.
December 01, 2006, 12:36:32 AM
Oh please don't get me started

1. Wimmin's gossip magazines
2. People who can not be objective at football matches... your team are bound to give away frees every game why protest about every one?????
3. People who have 14 'God' written on their football jersey's (What county could they be from??).... it is blasphemous you know!
4. The DUP
5. Bouncers on a power trip
6. The word 'innit'
7. Scientology and all scientology related things
8. Dubliners who refer to anywhere outside of Dublin as being 'Down the country'
9. People who sing "I don't see any London in Tyrone". Half of the people who sing it are staunch Sinn Fein supporters and would usually be happy to castigate any Unionist who might refer to the Oak Lef county as Londonderry.
10. Cork people's complete arrogance with regard to Roy Keane (If he burnt down an orphanage they'd say "Sure weren't they only knackers in the first place, boy"), the Cork Hurling team ("Sure Sean Og invented hurling boy") and the Munster Rugby team ("Sure Munster are the only Rugby team in Ireland boy, Rog is a legend and Humphries is a langer!")

I think I have gone on enough, I will submit more in a while!

GAA Discussion / Re: Why bother?

Happened to me in an U16 game!

In a Senior game, our own club referee had sent 5 men off from one club in a particular game. We then had a referee from the that club referee our Championship Semi Final Replay and didn't get a call for the entire match!!! I got my first ever booking during this game for something completely innocuous... I've probably only had 4 more since then and that was 10 years ago now.

Regardless anyway we lost the match by 10 and it wasn't the referees fault, but I still maintain that he was biased against us and it should NEVER happen.

Personally I like a bit of the old psyching up before a big game and tend to listen to a bit of the Prodigy, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot just to get the mind focussed!

I've heard some awful tripe played on buses like the eye of the tiger and simply the best... there is worse but I just can't remember it now.

Anyway music is the same as anything else. People are going to like different things and some people like to be psyched up during a game and some like to remain calm. I think it's up to the individual themselves to prepare for the game the best they can.

GAA Discussion / Drinking and the GAA
November 20, 2006, 01:14:37 PM
Having seen Ireland's 2 immense performance on the world stage there over the past few weeks it led me to think about the whole "Drinking and the GAA" issue. I'm sure it's no secret that a lot of the Irish Rugby team hit the town bigstyle just over a week before their 2 big games. Don't get me wrong I'm not begrudging it to them becasue they've obviously done a lot of work and deserve a night off but it has to beg the question do we in the GAA go completely overboard when it comes to drinking bans?

The year Monaghan won Division 2 they had been off the beer since November and were only allowed one night of celebration after their division 2 success. I myself have been involved in 3 month drink bans as well. It amazes me that these Professional International Athletes can perform to such a high level on 2 occasions withink 2 weeks of having been drinking and Intercounty and CLub players are expected to be dry for months and most of the time still come up short.

Are we taking ourselves too seriously? Should there be more realistic drink bans in place? Does anyone think that the culture in the GAA of going on massive drinking bans means more people are willing to flout it?

I'm just interested in hearing some opinions on it. My own opinion is that GAA teams, both club and county are getting much too carried away with themselves and that drink bans of one month before a game are more than sufficient coming up to championship and that you shouldn't drink the night before training or a normal match. I also believe it should be a two way thing and that if players are given this kind of respect they should not be out drinkinng 15 Aftershock and 10 vodka and red bulll.

If a more common sense approach was used I think drinking would become much less of an issue within the GAA than it is at present.

Rant over ;)
