RTE and SKY Live Coverage of GAA Championships 2014

BBC Northern Ireland has revealed its live television schedule for the forthcoming Ulster SFC.

Sunday week's preliminary round clash between Donegal and Antrim will kick-off their live match coverage for the summer. The Ulster SFC quarter-final between Armagh and Down on Saturday, May 28, which will go head-to-head with the Champions League final, will also be shown live, as will the two Ulster semi-finals on June 19 and June 29, and the Ulster final on July 17.

Deferred coverage will be shown of the other three quarter-finals - Derry v Fermanagh on May 22, Tyrone v Monaghan on June 5 and Cavan v Donegal/Antrim on June 12.

All matches involving Ulster counties in the All-Ireland quarter-finals and beyond will also be broadcast live.

RTÉ Sport Unveils Extensive 2011 GAA Championship Coverage



At a photocall in Croke Park today, (Monday 9 May), RTÉ Sport unveiled their extensive 2011 GAA Championship coverage across RTÉ Television, RTÉ Radio and RTÉ.ie.
This year RTÉ's unrivalled and top quality GAA coverage will be further strengthened by the arrival of a brand new mid-week programme, The Committee Room, to RTÉ Television, and by new signings including Liam Sheedy and Ciaran Whelan to RTÉ's GAA panel. 
Group Head of Sport, Ryle Nugent said: "RTÉ Sport is very proud of our 85-year-long tradition of broadcasting Gaelic Games. We always endeavour to provide extensive coverage of our national games while constantly innovating our output to ensure that GAA fans can enjoy the best quality sporting action available. This year sees new and exciting signings to our renowned panel which we hope will continue to engage debate and analysis of what will no doubt be another thrilling GAA season". 
RTÉ Television will broadcast a comprehensive package of 31 live games across this summer's GAA Championships including both the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship finals, all of the semi-finals, and four of this year's quarter-finals. The Munster football and hurling finals will be broadcast live on RTÉ Two as well as the Leinster Senior Football Final. There will also be live coverage of the eagerly-awaited clash of All Ireland Hurling Champions Tipperary against Cork on May 29th.

For GAA fans summer officially kicks off on Sunday 15th May as Michael Lyster presents live coverage of the Ulster Senior Football Championship clash between newly-crowned Division Two Champions Donegal and Antrim.

Joining RTÉ's hugely experienced expert panel this year will be 2010 All Ireland Senior Hurling winning Tipperary manager, Liam Sheedy and former Dublin legend and All Star winner, Ciaran Whelan.

Now in its 33rd year, Ireland's premier GAA television programme, The Sunday Game will return also on Sunday, May 15th with the first of three very special live audience shows this series. With presenter Des Cahill in the chair, The Sunday Game will feature highlights of over 90 matches this season.

Along with extensive coverage of the 2011 GAA championships, RTÉ Sport is also pleased to announce a brand new GAA midweek television programme The Committee Room. As every GAA member knows, the committee room of any club or county is where it all happens. Hosted by Marty Morrissey, the television series will feature a mix of interviews, issue-based discussion and interactivity beginning Wednesday 25 May on RTÉ Two.
RTÉ Radio will once again bring Gaelic Games fans the very best championship action in hurling and football from May through to September. Preparations for the season come as RTÉ Radio 1's Saturday Sport debuts in the Top 20 most-listened-to radio programmes in the country. Saturday Sport is the only sports programme to feature in the National Top 20.



RTÉ Radio 1's Saturday Sport and Sunday Sport will have full commentary of the top match every Saturday and Sunday as well as coverage from every other match. RTÉ Radio's team of commentators will include Ger Canning, Marty Morrissey, Darragh Maloney, Brian Carthy and Pauric Lodge, with additional analysis from the regular panel of leading former players and managers. New voices will also be heard on commentary and analysis this season including that of Seamus McEnaney who joins Marty Morrissey for commentary on this Sunday's Ulster Championship opener.



In addition to all the live action, Brian Carthy's magazine programme The Championship will return on Friday nights in June, while popular reaction programme Take Your Point will also be back on Sunday evenings.



Sport @ Seven will once again become an hour-long Sport @ Seven Extra from the first week in June, with Darragh Maloney and Pat Spillane holding the fort on Monday evenings to further reflect on and debate all the talking points on the road to the September finals. RTÉ Radio News Bulletins throughout the day will also have the breaking news on team selections, injuries, suspensions and all the other issues that matter to the fans who follow the Championship.

GAA fans in Ireland and around the world can follow all the action on RTÉ's online GAA section RTÉ.ie/gaa which will once again be the hub for fans to watch or listen to the games live, and to get the latest news, views, interviews and on-demand content.
RTÉ Television's 31 live GAA Championship matches will also be streamed simultaneously live on rte.ie/gaa. Live commentaries and extensive match updates from RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will be available worldwide. GAA fans in Ireland will also be able to catch up on any matches they missed with full-match replays available on-demand.

All of RTÉ's dedicated GAA programming from RTÉ Television, RTÉ Radio, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and RTÉ News will be available live and on-demand on RTÉ.ie/gaa. RTÉ Television's GAA output will also be available on RTÉ Player within the island of Ireland for seven days after broadcast. RTÉ Radio's Take Your Point and The Championship are some of the other GAA programmes which fans can access live and on-demand.

RTÉ.ie's GAA section will once again feature analysis from RTÉ's panel of GAA experts, as well as live text match-trackers, picture galleries, interactive features, news, previews and match reports. The 2010 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final attracted the highest ever viewership for an All Ireland Hurling Final peaking at 1.236 million** viewers. An average audience of over one million* people watched the nail-biting hurling final on RTÉ Two on Sunday afternoon when Tipperary battled to secure their first title in nine years and prevent Kilkenny from taking five in a row. 69%*** of those watching television at the time looked at The Sunday Game Live's coverage.
The 2010 All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final attracted the highest television audience for the event in the last five years. The epic encounter attracted a peak audience of over a million viewers (1.064 million**) on RTÉ Two Television in the final minutes of the match, when Cork beat Down to take home the Sam Maguire for the first time in 20 years. An average of 900,000* viewers tuned in to The Sunday Game Live from throw-in to final whistle, as the Rebels defeated the Mourne Men by a single point accounting for two thirds of people who were watching television at the time.

LIAM SHEEDY guided Tipperary to their first All Ireland senior hurling title in 10 years with victory over Kilkenny last September. He stepped down from his position as inter-county manager in October 2010. He is a former Tipperary hurler.
CIARAN WHELAN is a former Dublin footballer. During an illustrious career he won 6 Leinster senior football titles and has twice been awarded an All Star.  He's also captained Dublin.  He retired from inter-county football in 2009.

Ulster chief backs slimmed-down TV schedule

Ulster Council president Aoghan Farrell has welcomed the decision to reduce the number of live TV games this year.

The Cavan man believes the level of coverage afforded to championship games had reached saturation point and has backed the decision to cut 10 live games from the TV schedule.

"It is right to have less games," he said.

"Last year was a bit ridiculous. There were a few times we had three games on and you were switching from one channel to another. That was saturation coverage. The balance has now been struck and I would believe what we have at the moment is right."

County supporters are out a fortune on electricity with all these games on the television.

Farrell has also defended the Ulster Council's decision not to reschedule their provincial quarter-final between Armagh and Down on May 28 to avoid a clash with the Champions League final.

"Some people tell me when there is an omnibus edition of Eastenders attendances are affected," he added.

"Do attendances get affected by TV? Of course they do but can we react to everything on TV? I don't think so."

Hurling Championship Qualifier draws on Sunday

The draws for the Preliminary and First rounds of the GAA Hurling Championship Qualifiers will take place on Sunday evening in RTÉ.

As a result of the TV scheduling of games on the day, these draws will not be broadcast live.

They will be made public around 5-30pm.

The GAA have also confirmed that the draw for the first round of the GAA Football Championship Qualifiers are scheduled to take place on Sunday week in Carrick On Shannon and will be broadcast live on RTÉ.

The teams in the Hurling Qualifiers are Cork, Carlow, Offaly, Laois, Antrim and one from Westmeath and Galway. All six teams will be in the one bowl and previous parings can meet again. The first team drawn has home advantage.

The first two teams drawn play against each other, with the second two teams drawn also set to play each other. Both these games are Preliminary matches. The teams not drawn from the bowl progress to Phase 1, and will play the Winners of the Preliminary Round.
