Title: Derry are now in Division 4
Post by: Seany on March 25, 2018, 08:10:40 PM
Would you ever have believed it?  Some serious soul searching needs done in that county over the next few months.  Where are all the players who refused to commit?  Why is there STILL no real proper strategy to develop the game in Derry city?  How come a club with three or four of the best clubs in Ulster, can end up in Division 4?  And all these clubs were there when they were winning the All Ireland and Ulsters, so the attitude can't have changer THAT much.  And if it has, well why has it? .  How come a county with two of the top Ulster schools for MacRory (champions three out of the last 4 years) be in Division 4?  Derry are in Division 4.  Jut say that slowly...,  Seamus Heaney, Martin McGuinness, Dana, John Hume, Anthony Tohill, Derry Girls, Nadine Coyle, that Aileen girl from the Graham Norton Big Red Chair, Gregory Campbell - Your county is in Division 4!!

Derry Girls is set back in the time when Derry were decent.

Roma Downey is on the rich list, could you not name something after her like Roma Park and get a few dollars.

25 years since they won the AI, sad to see such a decline and I would have thought division 3 would be there floor.

Division 1 final and beating the dubs in cetlic park 4 years ago and running them to 2 points in croke park a year later to relegated to division 4, unreal. so mad at the minute, cant believe the farce going on.

There are approx 12-14 players within the county not playing at the minute due either to them not wanting to, not asked or injured, Kerry play players to 35 if they still good enough, Derry get rid of players like E Bradley who still  wanted to play but the no soccer bandwagan counted against him,he only 30 last time he played for the county. Barely anybody from Coleraine or Ballinderry will play and outside of slaughtneil should be providing alot of number to the county team. In 10years we had the biggest turnover of players, 1 less just than letrim.

Its really shocking stuff.

I'd never have believed any team could fall farther from the top table than Meath and Armagh but Derry have now surpassed the utter dirge served up by both of them.  The men's senior footballers should just clean the ladies boots for a few seasons.

Very sad to see Derry in div4. Always liked Derry. Surely the club's and players should look hard in the mirror and ask themselves are they happy tipping away in the club scene and allowing their county being embarrassed like this.

You are where you are for a reason and nobody is too good to go down to the bottom. Laois and Westmeath have both plummeted to division 4 in recent years and I don't expect Derry will spend more than a year down there either. Perhaps they should be doing better but there has never been any great love for the county scene in Derry, however neither do they have the quality of player of old.

Hard to believe Derry will now play Division 4 football after only reaching the Division 1 final in 2014.   Maybe this fall to the lowest tier will waken them up.

If I got decent odds I certainly throw a tenner on their promotion.

;D ;D

I remember a time our club manager rang Damian Cassidy looking a challenge match with Clonoe (Div 1) - we where Div 2 just been relegated from Div 1 and Cassidy told him you must have the wrong the number Clonoe wouldn't be playing Div 2 teams.

A proud Derry man in that photo - Be funny if Carlow refused them a challenge game next year as they wouldn't have much interest in playing Div 4 teams!

Surely the players who wont play for Derry is the biggest issue here?

Off course a player has a right to play or not but if they had the best players actually playing they wouldnt be in this mess.

Players should not worry about who the manager is - they will be there long after a manager has gone

So who is to blame?

Even without the Slaughtneil contingent, Derry should have had good enough players to win promotion.

I don't know the management team, but maybe a new start is required.

We've graced the basement more often than not in recent times appearing in Div 4 in 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and now 2019.

Fermanagh played in Div 4 in 2011 and 2012.  Before that I think Cavan were in 2B in 2007.

Westmeath effectively threw their match against Offaly which conspired to doom Derry. I don't think they are necesarily ranked 25-32 in the country but that is where they will ply their trade next season. The League table doesn't lie as the form is based on 7 matches against teams of a similar standard however and for whatever reason that is where Derry are now. Maybe it is the wake up call that they need to get their house in order, it can't always be the managers fault.

Out of the class of 93 very few materialised into decent managers though. Tohill managed to take charge of Ireland (despite having very little managerial experience) and you would have thought that he would have been someone who could have been given a role within the county at some point.

Fermanagh has the smallest pick in the country, so they have an excuse. Antrim just seems to have given up.

Why would they throw it. We hate the b*stards. They hate us. They were without John Heslin. We played well, and they finished with 12 men. A straight red early in the second half, a second yellow with ten minutes left, and another second yellow with 3 minutes left.
Ye got relegated boo f**king hoo. I actually don't mind Derry, but you're talking shite.

Lets be brutally honest, the League tables don't lie. Derry are a division 4 county and will find their level there. I'm sure a lot of the players are relieved they will no longer be going out to play games knowing they can't win.

We got relegated fair and square. Fair play to Offaly and Sligo for getting their wins and staying up.

Being brutally honest, I'll be extremely surprised if Derry don't regroup and win Division 4 next year. It's not the end of the world, embarrassing yes, (as is Division 3 for proud footballing counties) but they just have to bite the bullet and get on with it. Also all this talk about their county board and management being shite, probably deserved for the pathetic support the county team gets

Yeah we're way behind.  The Ulster Final of 2009 and Div 2 in 2011 seem light years ago.
