Pietas

Thats a good call!

Can we limit this to politicians/aspiring politicians who actually played inter-county, and not include lads who were 'handy footballers' according their own gobdaw supporters.
In Roman mythology, Pietas was the goddess of duty to one's state, gods and family.

Interesting the way all the hurlers are FF with one SF in among them.

Good list. Well done.

Jack, BTW, was later a founder of the National Progressive Democrats with Noel Browne, and then ended up in the Labour Party.

Poor Noel, I'd say, would'nt have known one end of a hurley from the other ....

Forgive me Stephenite, but my recolleciton of Tom Moffatt (and I think I may be older than you) was that he couldn't kick shite off a rope.  I don't recall him playing inter-county football, but I do remember him playing bad club football.

That's fair enough Pietas, I wouldn't be old enough to ever recall seeing him play, my comments stem from a story told by my old national school teacher re Tom, the teacher was a Crossmolina man, and Tom's son was in the same class so there may have some embellishment.

I wouldn't be a supporter of Tom per se, nice fella and all but not a supporter.

Bit light still on the hurlers, more to with their scarcity here than in politics i'd say.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the one who takes no prisoners i'd say the blueshirts are under represented as well.

Rossie lads - wasn't Hugh Gibbons on the 43/44 team? He was the Doc's predecessor as an FF TD. Dan O'Rourke, former GAA President was another.

Incidentally, though not TD's, Brian McEniff and Mickey Kearins were both FF councillors in Donegal and Sligo at one time. Kearins contested an FF GE Sligo/Leitrim selection convention, but wasn't selected. Ray MacSharry got the nod instead, and didn't look back.

I've edited passedit's list, to include links to how they each fared out, via electionsireland.org.
