Just been reading about Billy McNeill, and the 67 European Cup win. I didn't know that when he lifted the trophy, the rest of the Celtic team were back in the dressing room. Must have been a strange feeling up there and nobody to celebrate it with.

Apparently fans invaded the pitch, and the Portuguese police felt it was unsafe if the players remained on the pitch. So McNeill climbed the steps himself, and hoisted the trophy but his teammates were in the dressing room, and didn't see it.

McNeill also said he felt nervous having to receive the trophy standing at the edge of a concrete ledge, wearing football boots with 15 feet drop below.

McGee was one of the great characters in the game. He was editor of the Longford Leader and wrote once regarding match reports that he had to write them every week and that most in the genre are shite.
He also wrote a famous editorial after Ann Lovett died

I think this was his quote. Was honest unlike some.

A lot of the matches are shite, but the worst of all is having to write the column in wintertime. I sit down every Saturday night and say, 'What am I going to write here?'. I'm 30 years writing columns now, for God's sake! And some of the stuff I write on Monday is pure shite.
