Quote from: OgraAnDun on April 22, 2024, 08:21:26 PMArmagh must be worth an each way bet. Likely to be top seeds having had some warm up matches to try systems/squad before the Ulster final against a jaded Donegal or Tyrone. They'll probably not have a better chance of making a semi or a final for a while.
;)

In all seriousness, bar drawing Dublin I'd be very disappointed if we don't make a semi final. Donegal, Tyrone, Kerry, Derry, Galway, Mayo all very good teams but have their flaws, time we pushed on, sick of hard luck stories at the qf stage.

You have a serious chance of making top seed and then a 66% chance of drawing Clare or Louth/Kildare as 2nd seed in your group. Avoid the preliminary quarter final thereafter and you're set up to beat the hard luck stories!
Donegal have to be favourites for Ulster and serious All Ireland contenders after that performance at the weekend.
I Watched Donegal back last night. To say they blew Derry off the field is an understatement.  Probably the biggest shock in football since they bate the dubs in 2014 and yer man was at the helm then also.  Mc Guinness takes a lot of flak but I think he is a strategic genius and he has rebuilt Donegal again. Can they win the all Ireland. Id put them ahead of Derry at the moment who will now suffer from an inferiority complex with the teams who beat them, as they always do..

Ah now, hold on there!

I know you'll be wanting to build us up ahead of the weekend, but it was one game, and a game that Jim had six months to prepare for. There's no way in hell we're winning an AI this year. Even Ulster will take a huge effort given what's still there.

Jim is an superb coach, no question, but he can only work with what's there. There are no Murphys or Laceys or McGees in our current squad. And let's see what happens when he comes up against a team that gives us the kick-out and jams up the field inside their 50. We do have good long-range shooters, but it's not a reliable way to win every game.

Quote from: Turf on Today at 01:17:41 PMMaybe he will stand in the centre circle and tell the fans their job now is to support the new manager aka 'the chosen one'.

Klopp is leaving Liverpool far better than he found them. If he had would nothing else apart from the Premier League he would still be considered a legend imo. The fact he won everything there was to win (apart from the Europa League obvs) means he will go down as one of the greatest managers the club has ever had.

Certainly whomever comes in has big boots to fill but they should be given time because it's probably going to take next season at the least to find his feet at such a big club.

Genuinely intrigued that Liverpool fans will hold him in such high esteem, or maybe is it recency bias? He delivered one league title in 9 years?

I get that he is an iconic figure and was box office and even fans of other teams will miss him from the EPL.

They hadn't won any league titles in the 30 years previous, 1 in 9 isn't bad considering!
I'm actually genuinely intrigued about how someone couldn't see him as anything other than a success at the club but sure each to their own I'm not here to change anyone's opinion on him.
Liverpool fans will hold him in the highest of esteems and probably won't care what any other fans think.

I was just curious, I know he is a bit of a cult figure. Just wondered if looking back it will be with a bit of regret that it was only one title.

That being said United would take a single title at the moment any season.

There is only so much you can do when your resources are limited and those of your opponent are limitless. For example, even if he'd wanted to come, was there a remote prospect that Liverpool could afford the financial package required to attract someone like Erling Haaland? Pep is arguably the greatest coach of the modern era, but would he have done any better at Liverpool than Klopp has done in the circumstances?

From where he started, Klopp resurrected Liverpool in a manner not seen since Shankly. They were arguably the best team in the world in 2019/20, five years after ending a season and Steven Gerrard's PL career with a 1-6 loss to Stoke.

Placed in the context of what he was up against, I'd think there's a good argument to be made that Klopp is Liverpool's second best ever manager after Shankly. Third after Shankly and Paisley is a no-brainer.

And yeah, his personality and charisma helped with the fans, but surely that's also part of why he is so successful as a coach in the first place?

Yeah, expectations will be tempered for next season all right. Top 4 would be an excellent achievement for Slot or whoever the new man ends up being.

And Klopp, there will be a fist-bump statue at some point!  ;D

Next season is definitely make or break for Nunez. He has so many excellent parts to his game, but he's mid-20s now and far too often he either makes the wrong choice (pass or shoot?) or he tries to put his foot through the ball instead of slipping or poking it beyond the reach of the keeper. If you could graft Fowler's finishing onto the rest of his talents, he'd be some player!

League is gone, but I really hope that with the pressure (relatively) off, the players (and fans) quickly get over the disappointment, pull together, and make the last few games a good send-off for Klopp.

People will start to get excited (or not  :P ) about the next man, but first they need to show Klopp the love!

Quote from: Applesisapples on Today at 09:12:54 AMI didn't see the Derry/Donegal match, but I am seriously impressed by any team allegedly out played who's best players were stymied but still managed 17 points. Goals win games but can be prevented. it was 15 scores to 17.

Derry were ten points down going into injury time and knocked over four points after that when the game was gone.

But yeah, the goals they conceded were ludicrous and it wont take a whole lot to prevent a repeat.

Quote from: Milltown Row2 on Today at 07:24:33 AMBut was it a case of that unplanned meeting of Ron Nicole and OJ that sparked the madness?

Both could still be alive if Ron had not just 'turned' up and OJ could have just had words with her and left?

Or was he intent on killing her that night regardless?

According to the ESPN documentary, Goldman walked in as OJ was killing her or immediately after.

Been watching the ESPN 30 for 30 series "OJ: Made in America" on Netflix.

Recommend it, including for anyone who doesn't understand his acquittal in the murder of his wife and Ron Goldman. Goes into OJ's life, his refusal to align himself with other athletes in the civil rights struggle, and his pursuit of wealth and celebrity in white America as a non-threatening black man who transcended race. It also goes into the history of the LAPD, especially under the leadership of Darryl Gates, its terrible relationship with the black community and the various scandals that culminated in Rodney King, the subsequent riots, and three years later, OJ's acquittal. I hadn't realized (or I'd forgotten) but Detective Mark Fuhrman, the man who found the glove behind his house, took the fifth on the stand when asked under cross examination whether he had planted evidence in that very case! After 267 days of testimony and thousands of pieces of evidence, the jury took 3.5 hours to acquit him. Chickens (and Mark Furhman and a poor prosecution) coming home to roost...

As an aside, his wife was bad enough, but poor Ron Goldman. Just happened on the scene as he was returning a pair of glasses left behind earlier that evening in the restaurant where he was a waiter. A few minutes earlier, he would have handed them over and left before OJ got there. A few minutes later, OJ would have been gone and he'd have discovered Nicole's body.

Delaney article

What's amusing you?

I'd be very concerned about the state of Everton FC, historically a top club, if I was a fan of theirs. Other big clubs have fallen through the floor due to mismanagement.

Nothing against them myself. I hope they get straightened out.

Biggest victory since the 1995 FA Cup?

I think they'd a few last day escapes in the interim, so not quite that high on their honour roll. :D

Administration may still be looming according to Miguel Delaney today.

Quote from: jcpen on April 24, 2024, 09:57:59 PMDeserved win for Everton. If they played like that every week they would be in the mix for European places.
Liverpool's form has really fallen off a cliff the last few weeks.
At least the new manager will have Champions League football for next season.

Hope everyone who filled their boots at HT betting on a Liverpool win now know how foolish gambling is... ;)

They've still created more than enough chances to win almost all those games though. I'd say the finishing has fallen off a cliff. Salah and Nunez in particular look hopelessly out of form.

Quote from: J70 on April 24, 2024, 09:31:47 PMIt's a shame. It's going to peter out for Klopp.

Would you as a Liverpool fan have taken a trophy win,a top 4 finish and a  return to Champions League football and title challenge at the start of the season?

I suppose it would have been considered a decent season if Klopp hadn't announced he was leaving which only seems to have made everyone think only a quad or treble at the very least would be considered a success in his final season, certainly some other clubs would have been happy with what Liverpool will end the season with.

As a neutral I'll be sorry to see Klopp leave the league.

From where Liverpool were last May, of course I would have taken top 4, a trophy and a title challenge.

But you take it as it comes. A quad or treble was never realistically on, but Liverpool were in a really strong position a few weeks ago in the league, which is what fans REALLY care about. Now the last month of the season, once top 4 is sealed,  will simply be a case of fulfilling fixtures, and Klopp's farewell will be a lot hollower then it might have been had they at least taken it to the final weekend.

It's a shame. It's going to peter out for Klopp.

Konate was poor tonight. Quansah deserves to start next game

Salah has been terrible last few games.

Liverpool missing some great chances as has happened so many times in games this season.

Same old story. As shite as Liverpool were for half an hour, they really should be ahead in this match. Title chance blown through missed easy chances.

Quote from: Armagh18 on April 21, 2024, 09:47:13 PMTyrone and Donegal an interesting one, Donegal will surely not allow the Canavans and McCurry freedom of the park like Cavan did. And Donegal have better forwards than Cavan. Full credit to Cavan for dragging themselves back into that.

Can't see Tyrone getting near Donegal especially given extra time today.

Donegal will be shown to be not that great. They got 3 goals from a smart tactical move on kick outs. I don't think that will happen. I think Armagh would beat them should they meet in the final

Haven't seen anyone suggest we're "great". Why would they?

Ulster title is wide open.

Personally, I've no idea what to expect next week beyond the fact that I expect us to give Tyrone a good rattle, unlike the facile stroll we allowed them last year.

I know Liverpool need to keep winning, just in case, but it's hard to feel optimistic after the past few weeks. Maybe if they beat Everton midweek, but it's hard to have any confidence that they will, despite that win today. By all accounts Salah and Nunez still looked off it when they came on.
