Quote from: Milltown Row2 on Today at 07:04:49 PMMy father had his service from the same church, we had the 30 or so that was allowed but from the short journey from his home the place was packed with mourners, and outside the church it the service was played on a screen

Great clubman of ours had his funeral during that period, plenty lined the streets and we insured distance and so on..

There were plenty of funerals up and down the country that did their best to stay within the rules, and failed but Storeys will only make the news.

It's embarrassing that it's still a bone of contention, that said, it was always going to come back and bite them in the ass.

But did MON actually  break the rules ?

She said she was one  of the 30 invited to attend the funeral.  If ten more came into the  church , is that not  the church's responsibility to keep them out?

A neighbour of ours died during covid , and  at that stage  the number for funerals was  30 (possibly  40). We watched the mass on  video at home  , and  from seeing the crowd going up for communion it looked a  lot more.

Now ,  I'm assuming between the family/undertaker/priest they had to make  a list of the 30 who were to attend. Obviously it looked like more than 30 attended , but if more  came in through the door ,  who was responsible for breaking the rules?  The church? Undertaker?  The deceased man's family?

I was watching a bit of Michelle O'Neill  answering questions at  that covid  enquiry.

I haven't really  followed the minute details of the Bobby Storey  funeral fallout , so  here's my    question....,,,,

MON said she was  invited  to the funeral as part of a group of 30 mourners  (which was  the limit at the time.)

So, what exactly is  the issue with her attending?  If she was one of 30 invited,  surely she was allowed  given that this was  the number allowed  at funeral services  at the  time?

If  more people entered the church (making it  above the number allowed) , then surely that's the church's responsibility to  control that, not MON or any other of the mourners?

Or am I missing  something here?

I don't think Southgate is  any big shakes , but he'd be better than ETH. You might see somewhat  safety first style football,  but he has better  knowledge of the PL than ETH did (as that clearly shows ), and I reckon he'd  steady the ship  and tighten things up at least.

I'm not  clued into the European leagues so I don't know  who else  would be a  good fit at united ( other than Ancelotti, perhaps),  but as we've seen, continental managers  to the PL are much riskier  as  the game in Spain/Italy is  different. So in that respect, Southgate would  probably be the best of a mediocre bunch of  british-style managers ,   at this stage

Go back and have a word with yourself- What would you say?

- you can do anything you want to , if you put your  mind to it

To witness a great/infamous event, be it your own or other event (give reasons)

- my own county winning the All Ireland  (no reason needed)

To change something, but beyond your DOB and reasons

- send a  few bags of bibs and footballs to Saipan  well in advance of  Irish team arriving. I do believe Ireland could have reached  the 2002 final had Keane been there

Quote from: seafoid on May 14, 2024, 12:45:28 PMThe condensed season with all the extra matches in a shorter period of time is the real problem. It's hard to keep up with what is happening and not everything can be televised. GAA people have developed expectations about what will be available. And the football product isn't what it used to be either.

Agree with everything here. People's expectations need to be reined in. It is ridiculous to expect every single game to be free to air all of the time, but that seems to be the hill that some are dying on.

Personally I think  there's too much  football on TV.  The quality of football  is much better on the radio

Quote from: thewobbler on May 14, 2024, 01:18:01 PM"Besides not liking Sean what did he say that's incorrect?"

First of all I'm completely biased here and i know it. Cavanagh is quite probably the worst pundit in history. His lack of research is appalling, on a par with Spillane and Brolly, but he's just no loquacious enough to cover it up. He has an odd sense of humour. And his sense of place - I.e. talking about grassroots - always seems based on what he reads on Twitter rather than what's happening in an actual club.

So what did he say that's incorrect? From my perspective he's taking swipes and he doesn't have the foggiest what it is he's swiping at. He's just throwing out irrelevances. Joining in on conversation that he doesn't care much about, and accidentally taking it off on a new angle that nobody needs.

Worse than Tony Davis?

Paul "and your just thinking to yourself" Flynn would like a word.

My God, but Flynn is  dull. I seem to just  zone out  any time  he  speaks

Cavanagh can be a bit of a tithead but I'd  rather have him than Flynn

Loved Nevermind when it first came out, but Nirvana are just a little too raw, too intense for a soft old chap like me.

I do think  your music tastes  change as you  get older.  I was a big U2 fan but I  struggled to name  a top 3 for them.

I find myself now pulling towards Neil Diamond and Kris Kristofferson. My younger self would hate me lol.

Rightfully so!

;D  Indeed! Can't  abide Diamond, but that's for another day....

GAA Discussion / Re: GaaGo

Quote from: armaghniac on May 13, 2024, 05:11:10 PMThere is a great deal of shite on discussed on this matter. Some guy was on the radio there, likely a politician, saying that "Sky had been better as most people have Satellite TV", which is completely untrue, while in reality far more people have broadband. He then said that it should be on RTÉ and advertisers would bid for slots, but RTÉ hasn't much money to give to the GAA and there are people who are not paying their TV licence ranting about games not being on TV.
There is a loss of visibility to the GAA in not having this game on TV, and that too has its price, but there has to accurate discussion of the situation, not fantasy. For one thing, RTÉ is supposed to serve everyone and this aim might not be compatible with having 20 hours of GAA each weekend. Virgin Media does nothing, which it would if advertisers really were interested.

They're too busy  showing Love island and the Kardashian 's  ::)

SLTS

Aye , but  sure  the start  of this thread was for the Pogues , and I'm sure some picked  The Irish Rover and Waltzing Matilda .

Anyway , I'm not much of a Nirvana fan , but I did like the unplugged album ,  hence the inclusion of 1 and 3

Quote from: Armamike on May 13, 2024, 10:21:30 AMThis is getting hard to take at this stage.  It's ok sucking up one near miss on penalties but 4 now in 2 years?  Forgive me as an Armagh supporter for never wanting to see penalties in our games again.  For any  of you neutrals who think it's great entertainment, be careful what you wish for.  A lot said here and elsewhere about penalties being a lottery?  Sorry, that's nonsense. It's down to skill and composure.  If it was a lottery on the law of averages we would have won 1 or 2 out of those 4.

For me it's hard to escape the notion that we do have a mental block when it comes to seeing out a game, and especially when we are in front.  I've got to the point now where I would rather we were a couple of points behind going into the final minutes where we don't have to think to much about it and just for for it. 4 points up in a game like that where 2 teams set up defensively was a big advantage heading into the last 15.  We just had to match Donegal on the scoreboard but we stopped scoring completely. Just one or two points in that final 15 or 20 minutes would have won it.  Collectively I think there's a lack of nous and smartness in decision making when the pressure is on, and I don't see a go-to player who will demand the ball and do something to get us over the line, whether that is a crucial high catch in the middle, having the confidence to nail an important score, or a driving run to set up somebody. To be fair I thought Nugent showed some of that confidence and attitude but there wasn't enough.

Really feel for the management and players though. It's a tough one to take and will be hard to motivate themselves.  McGeeney has had so many near misses with Armagh and Kildare. He must feel bloody cursed at this point.

Yeah , I'd have to agree  with this.
