Laois / Re: Leinster Club Football and Hurling
December 09, 2015, 10:07:04 AM
1st of all i'm a townie no longer living there. i hope the players realise how proud we are of them. they were magnificent sunday. sometimes things don't go your way but from what i know of them they'll be back next year trying again.

portlaoise play a fantastic pure brand of football.. they trust their backs to go man for man and win battles. at times during the year i was waiting for the full back line to be destroyed but they grew as the year went on and i thought that line was great sunday. of course youre going to give up chances when you line out that way but i'd rather watch that type of football than some of the fare offerred. they are all footballers and dont shy away from the ball.  i hope portlaoise never abandon their football philosophy.

dont believe portlaoise are too far off winning another leinster. they seem to have good young players coming through again. some day they will be caught in laois. just hope its a team playing exciting football. sitting back and containing them doesnt work in laois. time some club threw off the shackles and had a real 'go'.

dont know how many as individuals can really offer what's needed for laois. dont believe it just as simple as 'start me or i wont play'. hope seale is brought on board. looks like he could really develop into something special

Must be very disappointing for o'dempseys. Most people probably had them as dark horses for championship at start of year. Fair play to a young ballylinan team though.

emo nearly pulled it off. Their goalie will be relieved alright.
hard to know who'll pull it off. It would be remarkable for pat Ryan to get a 3rd club to a county final.

town were always in control. Even when Killeen got it back to 3 points they tacked on 3 scores immediately. Need to improve on their own kick outs and probably a bit too pure at back with no sweeper. Killeen very poor and predictable. Ball moved very slowly compared to Town.
Town seem to have found a couple of younger lads and are renewing themselves. Their hunger and work rate is fantastic typified by last couple of points where Bruno fought like a demon to win the ball back even though the result was probably secured.

If you're looking at some team to take over from The Town every potential club seems to be regressing. Killeen & kilcruise nearing end (it will be interesting to see where both are in 5 years) stradbally gone back a lot, port very disappointing, o'dempseys relegated. Josephs probably the likely team now but it will take a few years.

Laois / Re: Who would want to be Laois manager?

as regards the coaching set up The Monument Road is on the right track. The coaches employed are spreading themselves too thinly with schools, development squads, cul camps etc. I can't see why the county board don't hold at least 2 coaching courses for each level every year. That way each club would have a group of recently qualified coaches training juvenile teams. How many courses have been held in the last 2 years? How many interested people are out there weekly training juvenile teams and having to make it up themselves as they go along? If coaches were properly trained clubs would produce more players able to participate in the development squads where the paid coaches could take over. This would then supply senior players in the years ahead. The attitude of 1 or 2 lads coming through each year will suffice has to stop. There's no reason why Laois can't produce competitive teams every year in every grade. There's plenty of people willing to help and do things properly but the county board may take the lead

Best wishes to Mick. He will be 100% committed and will expect the same from everyone involved in Laois football. He can be abrasive and won't take a step back from anyone or anything but he is a winner. I think i remember wooly refusing to play for the Town years back unless they got rid of Mick (which is probably a commendation for Mick). Nowadays the support team is every bit as important as the main man. Hopefully he'll get good people in (not necessarily the dearest).

Who cares anymore?
how can underage mentors try to instill discipline on hard to manage teens when they can point to this. For an association that looked down their noses are soccer for years this is farcical. I give up.
but sure who cares the money is coming in and a horde will be delirious tonight

GAA Discussion / Re: Money is Destroying the Game

This financial issue also drips down to club football. I'm sure most counties have clubs barely surviving trying to pay outside managers, s&c coaches, video analysts, physios etc. Club lottos meant to improve the club infrastructure are being handed over with interest. The big loser in all this is juvenile set-ups which are left under resourced. This eventually leads to poorer county teams down the line. It's a hugely issue croke park need to tackle

Laois / Re: 2015 Laois Senior Football

As someone said earlier the next appointment has to be more than just the senior manager. We need a director of football figure, someone who will come in on a 5 year contract and completely revitalise the whole set-up from underage to senior. Look what John Evans achieved in tipp. He may have moved on but the structures he put in place are now producing results.

I am not criticising anyone but at present the coaching set up is managed by the Co Sec. You need a specialised person in there to do it correctly.

If we just appoint a senior manager we'll be having this discussion again in 2 years when he resigns. I would suggest someone like tommy conroy. He has all the qualifications. Put somebody young (Joe Higgins or Chris Conway) in with him to take over senior job in 2 years for tommy to concentrate on coaching set up. Time to think long term

to go off on a slight tangent this situation is just an example of the poor direction many clubs have been taking. the pursuit of short term success seems to be the only thing on their minds.  i know killeen might be the most obvious offender but what about the thousands of euro small clubs hand out to outside managers / strenght and conditioning coaches every year. club 'development' lottos are being used to pay these fees. think what that money could do to help with young  player development. maybe clubs would'nt have to look elsewhere for players then.
