I was thinking if the Dems won the Presidency and senate, they could both stack the court and by adding 4 fairly safe future senate seats, protect against  the Republicans returning the favor later down the line.

It's what Mitch would do!

It's precisely what Mitch would do, and it's precisely what Biden needs to do.

The notorious RBG. RiP

If  McConnell pushes through a nominee after blocking Garland in 2016, Trump will probably lose and the GOP will probably lose the the Senate.

The US is a mess.

If Trump and McConnell do this, there needs to be a serious f**king backlash.

Make it a massive election issue, get the vote out, take back the White House and the Senate, and ram their cynicism down their throats by adding a few justices to the court.

The Dems have been pussies for far too long.

How do you propose they do that??

By expanding the supreme court and adding their own justices to it.

The number of justices is set by law.

If Congresses passes it and the president signs it, that's it.

Whether its a good idea or not, is a separate issue.

Apparently the number of justices was increased to ten to give Lincoln an extra pick, then dropped to seven to deny Andrew Johnson any picks, then upped to nine again (where it's stayed) to allow Ullysses Grant two picks.

All in the space of six years! :)

When Biden wins could they add 20 new justices straight away?

In theory, IF they take back the Senate too and abolish the filibuster

Gerrymandering usually backfires though.

Giving the vote to people who live in the US (or in a US territory in the case of PR) is gerrymandering?

I'd imagine the only constraint would be the amount of time the Senate would have to process the hearings and votes, but we're about to see how quickly they can get that job done when they put their minds to it.

Is this a serious conversation

So if Democrats take the White House and Senate, push statehood through for DC and PR and pack the Supreme Court what stops the Republicans splitting Texas to create additional states to take the Senate back?

Why should DC and Puerto Rico not have statehood and senate representation if they so desire, which they quite clearly do?

What's the argument against it?

Colonialism?

The fact that Texas will go blue before a breakup stands a chance of happening.

Conservatives have tried to split California already because they can't take a beating in the state, and that little effort didn't get very far.
