Its better in almost every way from 'back in the day', and it will continue to evolve.

100% agree with him. What we are watching these days is utter muck. People talk about the game evolving, I disagree. We are stuck with blanket defences forever unless we change the rules. Those saying there is nothing wrong with the game have the head where the sun don't shine.

Funny how hurling escapes this type of criticism. Sweepers and defensive systems in hurling are so much harder t look at. It ain't hurling as we know it!

Funny how hurling escapes this type of criticism. Sweepers and defensive systems in hurling are so much harder t look at. It ain't hurling as we know it!

Hurling has gone through a massive change this year with what Waterford/Clare/Cork have been doing. There were plenty of instances over the weekend in the hurling when the ball carrier was surrounded by 2/3/4 defenders and blown up for overcarrying which hasn't really been seen before.

It will be interesting to see how Kilkenny get on with that come the business end!

Sounds like he'd rather watch Kerry hand pass the ball all the way down the field into the net against hapless opponents running up cricket scores back in the day than have a team set up defensively to stop them. The stuff about the guy not ever going to watch Cork-Kerry again just sounds made up. I wonder though is this how the neutral now views the game.

He's writing for the Irish Times so he must have something important to say.

I think he is correct. The advances of Fermanangh, westmeath and sligo and some tight 'exciting' games has managed to cover up the mediocre skills on display. Handpassing is now accepted as the norm for defences and attackers in moving the ball up the field. Last night the Sunday game highlighted a passage of Kildares play where there was 25 passes , most of the from the hand, before the ball was kicked wide of the goal. Is that the future of football. Its becoming more like soccer. Maybe thats the direction some people want it to go? The one on one battles are almost a thing of the past except where a target full forward is employed. And all in the name of tactics.
