GAA Discussion / Best Galway Player Since 1990
November 21, 2006, 11:16:51 PM
Everyone else has their own poll so why not us! :) So who in ye're opinion is the most talented, and well rounded Galway player since 1990? (I've only picked 1990 coz that's as far back as my area of expertise goes!Feel free to let me know of anyone I should have included!)

Already lookin forward to Connacht c.ship now that o Mahony is in the Mayo job...DE i wonder who is on this pre xmas Galway panel???? Has Forde cast the net at all? ???

No idea to be honest. Away from home during the week so haven't really heard anything. Any suggestions about who should get a run? Young Hughes from Menlough is a name a lot are mentioning. Our own Tom Hughes did a great job on Joe Bergin in the county quarter finals during the summer, could be worth a look. I suppose a couple of Corofin lads will get a look as well after they finish up the club championship. One thing I did hear though, don't know if it's true or not, but Forde supposedly didn't contact Padraic or Mikey about the first meeting with the panel at all but told the rest of the lads they wouldn't be available without consulting with them at all. If it's true then he's bang out of order and should be told where to go.

As regards Mikey Donnellan writing a book, I seriously doubt it, very private lad, rarely talks to the newspapers never mind write a whole book about himself. Class player, he'll be missed.

From Hoganstand:
Joyce says injury is priority

18 November 2006

Galway football star Padraic Joyce says getting rid of a niggling achilles problem is his priority rather than wondering why he has been left out of the Galway panel.

Both Joyce and Michael Donnellan have been axed from the county panel by manager Peter Ford.

However for his part, Joyce isn't contemplating retirement or anything else other than getting himself fit.

"I've been bothered for some time by an achilles tendon problem that won't go away," admitted Joyce.

"I need to get that sorted and then see how I feel.

"Getting that sorted out is the main objective at this stage," the Galway star added.

Right there appears to have been a lot of wires crossed along the way somehow. What seems to have happened is the Galway panel returned to training with a panel of 24 last week but minus Padraic and Mikey. Mikey Donnellan it appears is taking a break for a year anyway and probably has retired but Padraic has just ruled himself out of the FBD and could even be back for the national league. I think somebody just jumped the gun, put 2 and 2 together and got a hundred and forty five. I think Padraic will be back for the championship if not before that to be honest. Donnellan I'd say we've probably seen the last of, that's been doing the rounds for a while, but crucially, there's been no official word confirming retirement from either player so we'll see.

Well lads, we all felt it was coming but didn't want to believe it but looks like its true. Announced on Galway Bay FM that both lads have decided to call it a day, but there's a chance we might see Padraic back for the league but for the minute, two of Galway's stars of the last ten years have played their last game in a maroon shirt. Thanks for everything lads, too of Galway's best ever players.

belleaqua you're obviously not a Killererin man/woman or you'd know that crucially that Kinneavy ( >:() blew the whistle seconds before the Bomb kicked it. Wouldn't be so sure about Corofin definitely beating Killererin in the final if we had gotten through, Caltra were very flat that day, Mike Meehan had a mare and nothing went right for them on the day. Corofin were the better team on the day, I'm not doubting that, but I wouldn't say for sure that they would have beaten us! Or maybe I'm just being a bit too parochial. :)

welcome aboard by the way belleaqua, nice to see another Galway poster, there's a fine herd of us gathering these days!

Reagrding retirements, I don't think we've seen the last of Padraic Joyce whatever about Donnellan.I'd say we'll get another year out of him. I hope anyway.Did Paul not just postpone surgery? I wouldn't really trust anything written over on HoganStand to be honest, I think most people are constantly on the wind up over there. ::)

Remember that day well GBB, Padraic running in fron of the goal, arms out stretched waiting for the pass, not a one near him and Savo made a complete hames of it! Took a long time to forgive Savo for that one!We made up for it the following year but it would have been nice to beat Kerry in a major final, something this group of players haven't done I think?

On the club scene, Gerry Kinneavy awarding Caltra a 45 to tie up the county semi final when it wasn't a 45 at all but a wide, playing 7 minutes of injury time after announcing 3, (there weren't enough stoppages to justify 4 extra mins!) and blowing up the game just as Tommy Joyce was taking aim at the posts!  >:( It's going to take a long time to get over this one lads, excuse the rant!

Haven't heard anything about retirements DJ, was wondering the same thing myself. Mikey D is supposed to have told a few he's retiring but there's been no definite word yet, Padraic, the rumours were doing the rounds after the Westmeath game that he was leaving but there's no white smoke there either so hopefully we won't lose anybody yet and they'll give it one last push. I heard that Donoghue was going to Australia travelling so don't know if he'll be available for the panel. Gary Sice had a stormer yesterday according to reports, could be an option for the no.7 shirt if he keeps this form up. As regards O'Donovan, on his day he can be brilliant but he's had numerous chances in the past, even last year he was tried and didn't make the cut. Is it worth while looking at him again? Has Clive Monaghan knee healed yet I wonder?

Might as well get this running again!

First of all, best of luck to Corofin against Mohill, not exactly my favourite team but they're representing Galway now so we have to get behind them!

Secondly, Peter Forde was finally ratified during the week. What do ye Galway lads think of the new management team? Should Forde have been given another year at all?Pete Warrens been there before, we know his credentials but what about Eoin O'Donnellan? Seems like an ok kind of fella to me, time will tell I suppose. There's a lot of anger at the treatment of Frank Broderick and Ciaran Ó Flatharta from what I'm hearing. Also Bunty Roche is meant to be favourite for the u-21 job. :-\ Any suggestions for the senior panel next year?Robert Hughes from Menlough is a name on many people's lips, haven't seen him in action myself, any opinions here?
