O2 network scraps unlimited data for smartphones

UK phone network O2 has scrapped unlimited data downloads for smartphone customers.

All new and upgrading customers will have their usage capped at between 500 Megabytes (MB) and one gigabyte (GB) depending on their monthly tariff.

Analysts said the move was "inevitable" as more and more consumers switch to data-intensive smartphones that can surf the web and show video.

Other networks are likely to follow O2, they said.

"O2 had become the industry poster-child of the capacity crunch era," said Thomas Wehmeier, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media.

Many customers have complained about poor service, download speeds and network coverage.

"It is a victim of its own success - O2 has had so many people sign up for data intensive phones, like the iPhone," Ben Wood of research firm CCS Insight told BBC News.

"Huge amounts of data are consumed by the minority of people."

Video pressure
O2 has said that the changes will affect just 3% of its 21m customers, who will have to pay additional charges for their data use.

"That 3% are using something like 36% of the data capacity of 02's network," said Mr Wood. "If O2 get it right, everybody will get a better service."

Having applied the brakes, O2 must now show that it can deliver a decent mobile surfing experience for those who stay loyal

Currently, he said, O2 was spending around £1m a day to upgrade its network to cope with the "exponential demand" for data on smartphones.

However, he said, it could not carry on adding capacity if data usage was exploding for the same amount of revenue.

The new charges will be brought in on 24 June, to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 4.

"They are using the iPhone as a mechanism to introduce the tariff change," said Mr Wood.

The new handset has a higher resolution camera and is able to record high definition video, both of which will add pressure to O2's network.

'Dangerous game'
O2 currently has the largest installed base of iPhone users in the UK.

The network's cheapest tariff will cost £25 per month for two years and will allow a user to download 500MB per month. After that, it will cost £5 for every additional 500 megabytes of data consumed.

O2 said that 500MB is two and a half times the average O2 customer's current use and would allow someone to browse 5,000 standard web pages.

Mr Wehmeier agrees with the figures.

"There's a lot of talk about the hunger for data of iPhone users, but our analysis shows that the majority of users will be comfortably served by 500MB of data per month," he said.

The most expensive tariff - at £60 per month - allows users to download 1GB.

Existing customers will be allowed to keep their unlimited data plans until they renew their contract.

O2's CEO Ronan Dunne sad the move laid "the foundation for a sustainable data experience for all customers".

Mr Wood said that he thought that most network operators - who face similar challenges to O2 - would follow the change.

However, he said, others may use it as an opportunity to try to woo customers away from O2.

"That's a dangerous game to play, if that top 3% of users go to another network," he said.

Balls to that, wouldn't be 100% on the amount of data I'd use on the iPhone but could be close to 500mb's. Could be hit hard when this comes in!

General discussion / RUBI

A RUBI - Random Unexplained Beer Injury.

We've all had savage nights out on the beer, many good times that will long be remembered. However, every so often there are those bad nights when the haze of alcoholic euphoria lifts and leaves you with an injury that for the life of you can't explain or work out.

One of my own RUBI experiences was gaining some degree of sobriety in an emergency ward in Liverpool with a doctor trying to put my shoulder in place after it had been dislocated. This was definitely a situation when the effect of the beer lifted extremely quickly. After the sixth attempt the whore of a thing went back into place and the investigation begun into how I ended up in this most unpleasent of situations. To this day all that I have been able to put together is I parted from mates at closing time and then I ended up in casulty.

Anyone else had any nasty RUBI experiences?

This may seem a bit strange and it's a very local but has anyone in Omagh town noticed ash falling like light snow?

I have just drove from one end of the town to the other and it's the same, must be a big blaze burning somewhere?

General discussion / Under-rated Irish Scenery
April 01, 2010, 09:58:40 AM
We've all heard of the cliffs of Moher, giants causeway and the ring of Kerry. All beautiful places with stunning scenery. However, there are many hidden gems throughout Ireland that many of us wouldn't be aware of.

My particular favourite is a drive up through Donegal into Glenveigh national park, through Gweedore up round the bloody foreland until Dunfanaghy. If you follow the signs to 'Horn Head Scenic Drive' you'll come across the spectacular cliffs shown below. I never knew these existed until i stumbled upon them on the aforementioned drive. Stunning.

Any other lesser known sites around our country that would be worth a visit?

We thought it was make or break versus Cork and Galway...well this time it is essential we get the win or we can say good luck to div 1 football next year.

Positives:

- Tyrone appear to play their best when their backs are against the wall

- Players coming back from injury will have had an extra weeks training

- Kerry aren't firing on all cylinders themselves

- Colm Cavanagh having another good game, himself and Cassidy providing a viable alternative to Hub and Enda

Negatives:

- Conceding big scores. A lot of which have come from silly mistakes

- Justin Mc Mahon has to be a major doubt

- Forward line not clicking with only Penrose and Mulligan near top form

- Another muppet of a referee (Pauric Hughes) blowing the whistle

This really is make or break now for Tyrone, lose this and I doubt we really are facing division 2 football next year. Some encouraging signs evident against Monaghan. Particularly Aiden Cassidy's display in midfield which will be badly needed against Corks big men on saturday evening.

Cork on a three match winning streak and we are on a three match losing streak, signs aren't looking too good!

Has anyone received this message from a friend?

"mate, can you give me a call ASAP on 02078377324 - my battery is dead and i need to speak to you"

I got it from a mate in London and phoned up straight away feeling a bit worried, turns out it was a prank, quite funny and extremly immature but I laughed all the same.

(if u ring the number no one will answer it's a pre recorded switch board)

General discussion / Favourite Fiction Author
September 29, 2009, 11:57:12 PM
Anyone read any good Fiction books recently? Or have a favourite particular author?

My own personal favourite would be jonathon kellerman, writes a good story and particularly accurate as he himself is a psychologist who done work with the cops in LA. I'm a psychologist in training so these psychological crime thrillers tick all the right boxes! Recently read a David Baldacci book which I really enjoyed, picked up a few more to see if the stanard remains high!

GAA Discussion / Why do Kerry minors not win more AI's?
September 17, 2009, 03:49:57 PM
Firstly, I'm not  green eyed tyrone man on a winding mission here. Although I wouldnt mind if it was a repeat of last years AI final line up!

So to the topic...Kerry seniors have won four (possibly 5) AI's this decade yet have had (relatively) minimal sucess in under-age football. I realize that winning minor/u-21 titles isn't a sure fire way of ensuring senior sucess but surely with the talent at their disposal they would have more  trophies at these levels?

What do you's think? Poor managers in recent time? Not enough focus on under age structures? This has always been a conundrum in my eyes

apologies if there already is a thread dedicated to this topic, couldn't be arsed searching through to check!

I'm thinking of getting broadband back into my house soon and was wondering if any of you's have any suggestions or recommendations regarding providers or good deals out there

Im particularly interested if anyone round omagh could let me no what sort of speeds are available at the mo, I have tested my postcode and best line available is 5.5mb.

I have researched a number of companies and considering plus net as they have an unlimited download package at a reasonable price.

Any help much appreciated...

After Galway defeat two points really needed to avoid a relegation battle. Will Mickey ring the changes again? Will lads like Gareth Devlin, Jason Mc Annulla, Snowy O'Neill get a run out? Will Stevie O'Neill be back or is it too soon?

GAA Discussion / GAA DVD's
November 16, 2008, 07:58:03 PM
Does anyone know of any DVDs of this years championship or when they will be released? Who put together the SAM 05 DVD which i thought was very good and will SAM 08 be available this year? Plus any other general GAA DVDs that would be worth purchasing?
