Recovering Files From External Storage

I was wondering if anybody knows of any good free programs to recover files that were lost as a result of a drive being formatted? There was a few hundred gb of data on the drive. I used a program that recovered the files but is looking me to buy it for $150 to be able to save the recovered images/videos.
