GAA Discussion / Re: Mayo v Tyrone AI Minor Final
September 23, 2008, 10:00:50 AM
it's been a weird and wonderful week ..... on sunday i was lucky to be in croker for 2 fantastic matchers - supporting Mayo against Tyrone in the minor match and then shouting for tyrone in the senior - sounds like a contradiction but there were lots more Mayo fans like me and some neutrals . It nearly worked out in both games and I'm sure it will come saturday....

the Mayo goalkeeper John O'Hara went down the professional soccer route. He made underage caps for Ireland and I think he then won a soccer scolarship to a US university and was fairly succesful over there .  - played a season or two with Sligo Rovers but back in the US pro league again

how about a veriosn  BIG BROTHER - participants Brogans x 3 , O'Sheas x 3 and maybe the Kernans and the Mortimers - all in one house together would be a bit of fun !!!

It's not intended to be negative to the Deise team and most of their fine supporters  - it is a point aimed at lots of counties. We have all seen bad days for our respective counties and seen the early exodus by the 'sunshines' - it was just so obvious yesterday.

It happens at lots of games and easy to explain away but point being made is that fans shouldn't walk out just when things aren't going right for the team - in fact that's the time to be making a point and staying put. It often leads to opposing fans gloating though Kilkenny fans could not be accused of that yesterday.

Hurling Discussion / Waterford fans let the team down.....
September 08, 2008, 01:40:58 PM
As a neutral it was easy to enjoy watching Kilkenny at their finest yesterday - there was only one team on the pitch and it was fantastic too see a display of hurling that most of us will never see the likes of again. It was a much different match to what we all expected but no matter who the opposition were yesterday there was only going to be one result. Kilkenny didn't need any opposition to put them under pressure - they manage do it to themselves.
Based on what I saw I have no citicism of DF or the Waterford team but I do have a gripe with the droves of Waterford fans who exited Croke Park before the end. Surely your team deserves better than that - no team deserves to see their supporters walking out, bad enough to be at the end of a beating without your own turning their backs. Looking around the stadium in the last 5-10 minutes was sad to see so many emty seats.
The 'real' fans did stay and i'm sure were just as disgusted with the walk-out of so many 'fair-weather' supporters. The same fans are likely to be throwing negative comments on their team around like confetti today. And with tickets are so hard to get the least that should be expected from those lucky enough to get one is to stay for the full match - there are many others would love to have been there yesterday.A s I say I was neutral and could appreciate but can understand that the emotions of Waterford supporters might be very different but that is no excuse to walk.
It's not the first time this has happened at big matches (and not referring to Waterford only) but is an awful practice!!

JoM needs to get rid of that political way of managing and deliberating and making statements - am i the only one that thinks he is gone into that middle of the road position that politicians have come to embrace - always have something to say without saying anything (and then we all try to second guess if it actually means somethin) - don't make any rash decisions - try to keep all sides happy - and so on..... right decision by both JOM and County Board but would be great too see less of the nice guy and a few more actions to move things along. We haven't moved to far forward in 2 years (mostly sideways) so it has to happen in Y3.....

don't often see any much analysis of the minor championship in itself but i see on http://www.clubmayo.ie/201.php that both Kerry and Mayo have plenty to play for in todays match.
Both have proud traditions at minor level but Kerry (ranked no. 1 in minor titles) haven't won a title since 1994 and Mayo haven't won since 1985. Like their seniors Mayo have made it to a few finals but no silverware to show - hope the current crop can make amends and bridge that gap. interesting read......even has a look at how minor success is mapped to senior success....70%

A theory on why delay in naming Mayo team...the problem is the half forward line - i.e. leave or switch Pat Harte

Our best HF line would be T Mortimer, Harte and Dillon - everyone being fit and available that would definitely be it and a formidable centre half forward line at that.

If T Mortimer is not fit that requires 1 change to the ideal lineup (PGardiner or BJP or AMoran maybe)
If McGarrity also not fit that could mean 2 changes to the HF line as one of the obvious switches is to move Pat Harte from CHF but that means ideal hf line is now badly disrupted - 2 regulars down.
If TMort is fit but RMcG is not then switching Harte is a strong possibility
If both are out the answer might be to leave Harte at CHF and start Seamus O'Shea at midfield.

A lot of if's but could explain why JOM wants to delay because the team changes necessary could be very different on either or both being out - not simple as 1 or 2 out and 1 or 2 in.

That aside if McGarrity doesn't make it on Saturday but Mort is ok what is the best midfield partner for Parsons? Harte or O'Shea ?

no problem with the Dubs as such for lots of reasonslike they will fill the stadium and all kind of financial and health and safety and all that - we might not all agrre in principle but there's a bit of logic to it.
But Cork getting centre stage and special treatment is more than a bit annoying as just a few months ago they would't travel anywhere to play their open league matches - remember ! Looks like teams who tow the line and have always shown a good attitude (Galway and Armagh and I'm not from either) get the short shift
