So, will this ever happen? WTF are they stalling for?

The government has held secret talks with the UDA leadership about the decommissioning of its weapons.

Security Minister Paul Goggins and Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde met members of the organisation's ruling "inner council" on Monday night.

The NIO has confirmed Mr Goggins had private talks with the political representatives of the UDA and what it called "other leading loyalists".

The BBC understands they included the majority of the UDA's inner council

The UDA has said for years that decommissioning was "not even on its radar screen".

However, the UDA leadership now says the issue is being discussed, but the vast majority of its members and supporters are opposed to giving up its weapons.

The government says that is just an excuse.

It wants the organisation to begin the process of decommissioning within six months and if it does not, the international decommissioning body could cease to exist.

At that point there would no longer be a weapons amnesty and any weapons found will be forensically tested and the evidence used in future court cases.

General discussion / Radovan Karadzic Captured
July 22, 2008, 11:12:37 AM
very surprised that there isnt a thread on this already given i was the most wanted man in Europe.

Karadzic 'worked in Serb clinic'

Captured Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic was practising alternative medicine and living in Serbia's capital, Belgrade.

He working in a private clinic in a "very convincing disguise", sporting a long white beard, and calling himself Dragan Dabic, a Serb official said.

He was arrested on Monday near Belgrade after more than a decade on the run.

He is indicted by the UN tribunal for war crimes and genocide over the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica.

A judge has ordered Mr Karadzic's transfer to the UN war crimes court in The Hague, Serbia's war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said.

Rasim Ljajic, the Serbian minister for relations with the international war crimes in The Hague, said Mr Karadzic had been living very convincingly as a non-Serbian citizen, using false papers.

"The fact that he was involved with alternative medicine, earning his money from practising alternative medicine, shows that he worked," he said at a news conference in Belgrade.

"He was working in a private practice and the last place where he had residence was New Belgrade."

General discussion / Guildford bomb campaigner dies
July 20, 2008, 12:09:38 PM
from the BBC

West Belfast woman Sarah Conlon, whose husband Giuseppe and son, Gerry, were wrongly convicted over the Guildford IRA pub bombings has died aged 82.

Mrs Conlon helped secure an apology from former prime minister Tony Blair in 2005 for the wrongful imprisonment of her husband and son.

Her son Gerry spent 15 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of the Guildford bombing.

Guiseppe Conlon, arrested after going to London to help him, died in jail.

Sarah Conlon spent 16 years campaigning to have the names of her husband and son cleared.

The Guildford Four - Gerry Conlon, Paul Hill, Carole Richardson and Paddy Armstrong - were jailed for life in 1975 for an IRA bombing campaign which killed five people and injured 65.

Gerry Conlon said his mother bore no bitterness about what happened

The Maguire Seven - members and friends of the Maguire family, including Guiseppe Conlon - were convicted of possessing nitro-glycerine allegedly passed to the IRA to make bombs.

Three years ago, Tony Blair delivered a public apology to the Conlon and Maguire families, saying they deserved to be completely and publicly exonerated.

Gerry Conlon said his mother bore no anger or bitterness about what had happened to him and his father.

"She was remarkable in the fact that she didn't bare any ill will towards the people who first arrested us and then tortured us and framed us," he said.

"And while I was in prison, every letter ended the same: 'Pray for the ones who told lies against you and pray for the judge who sentenced you. It's them who needs help as well as yourself.'

This small lady of frail frame had huge reserves of faith, fortitude and remarkable forgiveness

SDLP leader Mark Durkan

"That was just my mum. She was quiet, reserved, unassuming, but a giant in her own way. Very principled and very caring, and loving as a mother."

SDLP leader Mark Durkan paid tribute to Mrs Conlon, who died of cancer.

"Of no-one can the words 'patience of a saint' be more true and she was not just distinguished by her patience," he said.

"This small lady of frail frame had huge reserves of faith, fortitude and remarkable forgiveness.

"What Sarah, Guiseppe and Gerry Conlon and their family had to endure physically, psychologically and personally would have given Sarah more cause to hate than most."

General discussion / Hygiene Tips This Easter
March 20, 2008, 04:28:47 PM
just in case any of you are thinking of this take notice:

From the BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7305522.stm

Health officials in the Philippines have issued a warning to people taking part in Easter crucifixion rituals.
They have urged them to get tetanus vaccinations before they flagellate themselves and are nailed to crosses, and to practise good hygiene.

On Good Friday dozens of very devout Catholics in the Philippines re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

It is something that has become a huge tourist attraction, although the Church frowns on the practice.

Disinfect

The health department has strongly advised penitents to check the condition of the whips they plan to use to lash their backs, the Manila Times newspaper reports.

Real nails are used in the re-enactments

They want people to have what they call "well-maintained" whips.

In the hot and dusty atmosphere, officials warn, using unhygienic whips to make deep cuts in the body could lead to tetanus and other infections.

And they advise that the nails used to fix people to crosses must be properly disinfected first. Often people soak the nails in alcohol throughout the year.

Every Good Friday, in towns across the Philippines, people atone for sins or give thanks for an answered prayer by re-enacting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Giving thanks

In the northern city of San Fernando alone there will be three separate improvised Golgothas - the biblical name for the hill where Jesus was crucified.

Four people there have pledged to have their feet and hands nailed to wooden crosses, while others will flog themselves while walking barefoot through villages.

Sometimes people repeat the penance year after year, like the fish vendor who will be nailed to the cross for the 15th and last time on Friday to give thanks for his mother's recovery from tuberculosis.

With long hair and a beard, wearing sandals and a crown of thorns, he is tied with cloth to the cross but also has nails driven through the flesh of his hands and feet, avoiding the bones.

General discussion / Bilbao goalkeeper hit by bottle
March 16, 2008, 03:25:29 PM
Spanish side Athletic Bilbao want tough action to be taken after their keeper Armando was hit in the face by a bottle thrown from the stands at Real Betis.
Bilbao had just taken a 2-1 lead when a plastic bottle full of liquid hit Armando as he went to retrieve a ball.

The keeper was stretchered off and had stitches for a cut just below his right eye while referee Carlos Gomez abandoned the game after 72 minutes.

"It is time to take drastic action," said a statement on Bilbao's website.

606: DEBATE
What is the best way to stop this from happening?

It is not the first time there have been problems at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium.

Last season, Tottenham manager Juande Ramos, then coach of Sevilla, was knocked out after being hit by a bottle thrown from the stands during a King's Cup quarter-final match there.

That game was abandoned and the remaining 33 minutes played behind closed doors at Getafe's stadium while Betis were given a three-match stadium ban.

But Bilbao argue stadium bans are not working.

"We cannot put the players at risk debating whether there should be a two or 120-match stadium ban," the club's statement continued.

"What hurts are the points.

"The Spanish league must not hold back. It is time to be European and to take drastic action."

Betis condemned the incident on their website saying: "The aggressor was immediately detained by the stadium's private security and will be prevented from attending future sporting events."

In December, Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas was hit by an object thrown from the crowd during a league match at Bilbao's San Mames stadium.

Bilbao were fined 600 euros (£460).

General discussion / The Death Sentence
February 25, 2008, 12:28:16 PM
With some of the victims of Stephen Wright calling for the death penalty to be re-introduced for crimes other than treason, should it be?

Should the ultimate sentence be allowed for the most heinous of crimes and only on cases where there is 100% evidence to prove guilt? Or is this too far?

Would its re-introduction be enough of a deterrent to stop serial murders and the like from committing these crimes or dose it really matter to them?

General discussion / Appeal over 'poison pen' review
January 24, 2008, 10:22:12 PM
I think this was done on the old board at the time of the actual fine.

From the BBC

It would be "perfectly ludicrous" if libel proceedings could be issued every time a critic wrote a bad review, a lawyer has told a Belfast court.
Lord Lester, QC, was speaking at the close of a two-day appeal by Northern Ireland newspaper, the Irish News.

The paper is appealing a defamation finding made against it last February.

The paper had been told to pay £25,000 to a west Belfast Italian restaurant owner after a jury found a food critic's review to be defamatory.

Journalist Caroline Workman's August 2000 review criticised the quality of food and drink, the staff and the smoky atmosphere in Goodfella's restaurant, Kennedy Way.

Owner Ciarnan Convery claimed the article was a "hatchet job".

The jury's verdict that the review was defamatory was unanimous.

But this week, the newspaper pleaded justification and fair comment and appealed the finding.

The appeal was heard by a panel of three judges at Laganside Court.

Distinction

Lord Lester told the appeal that a distinction had to be drawn between a factual news report and a feature in which the writer expressed an opinion.

The restaurant review had clearly been a feature in which the reviewer "in good faith and without malice gave a valued judgment on her visit to the restaurant," he argued.

Michael Lavery, QC, for restaurant owner Mr Convery, rejected claims that the jury had been misdirected in last year's case.

Reviewers must be able to offer proof to back their views, he said.

"The way the jury approached this is they isolated the facts from the comment and they looked at the defamatory words," he said.

He argued against drawing a difference between factual reporting and a review.

Judgement was reserved in the case, which could have far reaching implications for newspapers and magazines across the United Kingdom.

there will be a fair few critics out of a job if this is upheld or everyone will be getting a good one.

Man's hand 'severed with sword'

Irish police are investigating an incident in Dublin in which a man's hand was severed.
The incident happened after a row broke out in the Deputy Mayor pub in Meakstown, Finglas, on Sunday evening.

It is believed a sword was used in the attack. The victim, a 27-year-old man, has undergone surgery at Saint James's Hospital in the city.

A man was arrested shortly after the incident and is being questioned by police.
