I have a limited amount of partworn and new winter tyres available in 15inch and 16inch if any of you are interested. I am based in Ballygawley Co Tyrone. Fitting service is available or tyres can be couriered to anywhere in Ireland.

How well do they work during spring/summer?  I know in Scandanavain countries you have to have dedicated Winter tyres and so have a 2nd set of rims with these tyres on. Do you have to replace these tyres every winter?

Tony, I am doing part worn for £25 - £30 each. They have at least 5mm on them, new have 8mm and legal limit is 1.6mm. This includes fitting. I am doing new retreads (remoulds) for £40 - £45 each.

Denn, Winter tyres are legal to use all year but this is not advised. The rubber is a softer compound and will wear quicker in summer weather. The general rule is that if day time temperature is below 7C then winters are required.
Most cars now are front wheel drive so if you get 2 rims and put winter tyres on them that will do the job on the front. Do not worry about the back unless a rear wheel drive car (BMW Merc)

After winter put the original rims back on and keep the winters for next year.

In Scandanavain countries, drivers also use studded tires, it's illegal to have them on  May to November.

But even if you have unstudded winter tires, you want to just use them for winter, because  you want to preserve the thread and the compound used in first 4mm of thread, for as many winter seasons as possible. And when you are finally down to 4mm after a winter season, then you can keep them on over the summer, no problem. If you get 3 winter seasons altogether from a new set, you are doing well.  The grip effect is not just with the depth of the thread but also with the compound used in the thread.
All season tires are not 10% as effective as dedicated winter tires, in the ice and snow.

Winter tires as a description, covers a lot of sins.
Each brand of tires will have a range of winter tires, from cheaper to not cheap. Always know what brand and what type of brand tyre you are buying, whether the tyre be new or secondhand. It's not enough just to know its a Michelin, but what type of Michelin.

All are winter tyres,  some are better than others, usually (but not always) reflected in the price range.
