QuoteAnd why can shops in Newry sell things for half the price of shops in Dundalk?

Because taxes are higher in Dundalk to pay for the best paid public servants in Europe. That's why.

VAT in Newry 15%, VAT in Dundalk 21.5 % ....profits in Newry ?% Profits in Dundalk ?x2 % perhaps.
Any higher wages in Dundalk ( and all the 26 Cos) were more than necessary to pay for houses which were selling for about 3 times their real value as Bertiebolix and his Galway tent mates continued to ride their goldrush with abandon and to hell with the future.
Mind you they must pay some tax in Dundalk if it pays all the public Service wages  :o

And when FF were wining and dining the builder, FAS were spending billions on foreign trips and our man McLoone did nothing other than look for pay rises every year and saying nothing until a national paper expose the who scam....McCloone gets a national strike today and still claims a salary 6 times the average industrial wage...yes i guess it was only the builders and governments fault
Grand Slam Saturday!

I like your logic, so your saying it was high house price that drove up wages! Thats funny, ill have to remember that the next time i am sitting accross the table from the unions!

Rossfan

House prices rose by a multiple of 7 between 1994 and 2006. Average Employees' wages rose by about 2.5 times.
Now anything up to 200,000 people are landed with mortgages higher than their homes will be worth when property prices get back to the true value figure.
No NAMA for them though.
If house prices had say "only" trebled in those years it would have been quite easy for you to convince Unions that their members didnt need such high increases.
