Witnessed a very determined Westmeath performance in Navan this evening, they played with a passion not seen since Qualters days. The winning of the game was in the start, they hit 2-7 to no score in the first 15 minutes and they kept that 13 point margin more or less until the end of the game. Kildare did close it down to 8 in the second half but we nipped the threatened comeback with a heartbreaker of a goal. Best for Westmeath were Joe Clarke in the middle, Mitchell, McCormack and Whelan in the backs, and Murtagh upfront. Special mention to Burke in the goals, the referee could have awarded another 2 penalties on top of the 2 he charitably gave and Burke was never gonna be beaten. Slightly worried that we never pushed on after that great opening as you knew once Kildare got to the santuary of the dressing room at half time that they were going to come out reorganised. As expected it's Kerry in the final and while it's nice to be back there we really owe them one after beating we took off them earlier in the campaign. Glad to see the final is in Croke Park, the lads deserve a run out there after that display...

Brilliant result for Kerry, great to see them getting to a national final in Croke Park and I hope they can bring Christy to Kerry for the first time.

Should be a good evenly balanced match this one, when is it on?

Ye do have a penchant for looking after cups named after lads from the rebel county it seems!

July 3rd in Croke Park. Last year it was part of triple header with the Rackard and Meagher Finals. But The Christy Ring is ending much earlier this year so the other 2 competitions won't be anywhere near finished.

I would like to think it would be played before the Leinster Final the next day. Regardless it's some fall from grace when it was on before the AI semi finals...

The finals of the Rackard and Meagher are both scheduled for July 3rd as well.

Fair play to Kerry they've come on well this year under Meyler. It would be good to see them win it but I suspect Wetmeath will have too much experience of a Croke Park final to lose this one.

Kerry Mike

Great to see the Kingdom getting to a national final in Croker , huge day for the Kerry Hurlers and for the hurling folk of Kerry who have slogged hard for years to scrape teams together and to keep the game alive in only a very small pocket of clubs, and always in the shadows of the footballers.

Great for fellows like Shane Brick and John Mike Dooley and others to finally play on the biggest stage, and I am looking forward to seeing scoring prodigy 19 year old Darragh O'Connell doing his thing, great weight on this young lads shoulders but I wish him and the rest of the team well.

Musha will you go away out of that, the fecking cup has never been in Munster let alone the Kingdom & ye want to bring it home??? Jaysus, you'd think ye would be happy enough having the Sam Maguire resting by the lakes of Killarney most year without trying to lay claim to our trophy... Well it will be after tomorrow when we raise it to the heavens for the third time (ourselves & Carlow are currently on two each). No news on the team yet, are you heading in yourself Mike?

Is Shane Brick and JM Dooley getting on in years as they were some operators in their day?

Well done Westmeath.  The core of that panel now have 3 Christy Ring Cups won.  Time for a bigger challenge.

The Wedger

These competitions were given a disgracefully low amount of coverage by the GAA.
You would hardly have known the finals were on.

This picture shows exactly how important this match was to the players:

Croí na hÉireann

Well done Westmeath on bringing the Christy Ring Cup home, now we have 3 years to settle into the Liam McCarthy. At the end of which, if we're to progress, we should aim to be ahead of the lower tier group of Laois, Carlow and Antrim and putting it back up to Dublin. I think Offaly will push on from this year, hard to know what Wexford will do.

Hard luck to Kerry, John Meyler has done some job down there, I'm sure ye'll be back next year.

No disrespect to Westmeath (and well done on their success) but I really wanted Kerry to win this one.
