GAA Discussion / Largest deficit over turned?
August 08, 2011, 12:04:06 PM
Just wondering what the largest deficit ye remember being turned around?
Mayo were 12 points down to Dublin in the league this year and got back to level terms but then lost the game.
6 down to cork the last day, 7 to the dubs in '06 and was it 7 to Galway in '04?

There was also some game there in the mid 90's that we were 6 points up but we drew that thank God  :-\

Edit: maybe keep it to intercounty

General discussion / Swimming

Many of you swim?
I never learned when i was younger, bar a few lessons in national school which ended up scaring me more than anything.
So learned a couple of years ago and started doing triathlons but i plow through the water, technique is brutal.
Recently started reading a book called total immersion, making my way through it, idea is that you streamline ur body and use gravity to push u rather than what i was doing just pulling myself with my good arm through the water.
Just wondering if anyone else has tried this? Any tips?

Anyone watching this? I reckon the farmer lad from Tipp will win from the lads.
Ignatius is from down my way, not awful popular, apparently has left a lot of boys without money and hasn't been too friendly about it either. Owes the bank a few mill as well.

General discussion / Cowen Guilty of Treason?

Cowen reacts to Labour charge of 'economic treason'

MICHAEL O'REGAN

FIANNA FÁIL colleagues applauded Taoiseach Brian Cowen when he reacted sharply to a charge of "economic treason'' by Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.

Mr Cowen said the Labour leader should be under no illusion about the motivation behind every decision he (Mr Cowen) had made during the difficult times he was Taoiseach, irrespective of whether he agreed with them.

"They were the very same laudable motivations that would have moved him had he been in my position,'' Mr Cowen added.

"I would never come into this House to accuse another Irishman of what he accused me.''

Earlier Mr Gilmore said the Taoiseach had asserted that the Government's decision on Anglo Irish Bank was taken in the national economic interest.

"Nothing I have heard since September 2008 convinces me that was the case.

"I believe that the Taoiseach and the Government made that decision in September 2008 not in the best economic interest of the nation but in the best personal interests of those vested interests who, I believe, the Government was trying to protect on that occasion.

"I believe the decision was made to save the skins of a number of individuals, some of whom were connected to Fianna Fáil and whose property interests and prosperity were bound up with the fortunes of Anglo Irish Bank.''

Challenging the Taoiseach to publish all the advice he had available to him on the issue, Mr Gilmore added: "If my belief is correct, and I have not been convinced to the contrary, that decision was an act of economic treason for which this country is now paying very dearly.''

He said people had received "a very big bill for Anglo Irish Bank'' on Tuesday.

"That rotten institution acted as a piggy bank for property speculators, was described in strident terms by the Minister for Finance as having been reckless in the manner in which it conducted its business, and has caused the huge problem we now face in our economy.''

He said the bill was equal to the sum total of the pay cuts and pension levy in the public sector.

"The responsibility is on the Taoiseach to explain why it was necessary to provide Anglo Irish Bank with the extensive and broad guarantee that has now landed us in a situation whereby it will cost €40 billion to keep it going and even more to wind it up,'' said Mr Gilmore.

Mr Cowen said he had respect for Mr Gilmore as a deputy down the years.

"It is reciprocated,'' said Mr Gilmore.

Mr Cowen added: "If, as he says, this respect is reciprocated, I want to tell him very sincerely that in my 25 years in politics I have been beholden to nobody.

"Every decision I ever made in the privileged positions I held in this and other offices has been in the best interest of my country as I saw it.

"I accept that in a democratic debate, irrespective of how arduous or tough it may be, people may hold contrary opinions, but I will not be accused of seeking to commit treason against my country.

"I consider that to be beyond the Pale.

"I understand that people are angry about what has happened, and rightly so, but I also have the responsibility to say that anger in itself is not a policy.''

Mr Cowen said he was a politician, and he knew how it worked.

"I can see the opportunity which the Opposition wishes to grasp in terms of seeking to inflict political damage. I can defend myself by arguing and debating. I am well able to look after myself when it comes to that.''

Took this from the Irish times, heard it on yesterdays news. Not a fan of Cowen at all but way too far to call the leader of our country a traitor.
Even less of a fan of Gilmore, even more of a union lover than most labours, would hate to see him in government, either be an economic disaster or he'd have to suck it up and tell the unions where to go. But this sort of comment has no place in the Dail, and can only help FF support IMHO.

Can't see either team busting themselves, a draw will see them both through to the final & I think Cork will prefer us to the Dubs in the final.

May as well start this.
Dont think it will tell us too much about Mayo, I'll be honest and say that I dont think Dublin have changed from the last few years.
Trouble is we dont know if mayo have either

January 14, 2010, 12:37:34 PM
For those of you interested in prediction leagues this is one which involves picking the scores & scorers for Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea. It's run by an old boss of mine, costs €15, €5 of which goes to the Niall Mellon &€10 back in winnings.
They have set up a website this year & are running a trial for this weekend so people who haven't played before can get an idea of how it works. Go to www.mulacleague.com for more details or send me a PM.

General discussion / Gaelic Tag
June 25, 2009, 11:47:12 PM
Hi guys,
I'm in the process of setting up a Gaelic Tag league in the Iveagh Grounds in Crumlin. Its due to begin when the Tag Rugby finishes, end of July.

The idea is the same as tag rugby, mixed team, tags instead of tackling, no contact, we've taken out kick passing for lads, and goals and points are worth more for girls, 5 points for a goal, which can only be scored by girls, 2 points for a girls point and one for a lads point. 7 Players on a team, 4 lads & 3 girls, in pitches played on the width of the pitch.

We're hoping to make a big deal of the social side of it as well, table quiz, bands, BBQ, speed dating etc.
We're launching it next week, fingers corssed the website is up and running, and we'll be having 1 or 2 open nights so people can see whats involved and try it out before signing up.

I'll post again with details of the website and of the open night.

All comments/suggestions welcome.

General discussion / European & Local Elections
May 13, 2009, 06:57:14 PM
With the local & european elections only a few weeks away this will be a good oppurtunity to see how far FF will fall and what gains the rest will make.

For my money I wouldn't vote for FF, SF, Libertas or socialist, so that leaves me a smaller field.
Labour are out, if the unions got a grip of power in this country it would be an absolute disaster, dont agree with anything they have to say, even though they are very capable in getting their message across.

That leaves the greens, doing a very good job in their departments, esp Ryan, or FG, who have the most capable man in the Dail in Richard Bruton or capable local independents.

Chances are we'll prob be left with a core FF vote that shows us we have the government we deserve, rather than them getting wiped out as should happen.
Their argument that "well you couldn't trust FG", is old and annoying and holds no weight, for once FG are coming up with aternatives bt not getting their message across. The public has made up their mind on Kenny, which is disappointing.

On a sidenote a lot of younger, even better looking candidates, the Mary Lou effect no doubt. And has anyone seen Ben Doyle, FF, in Dublin South, a ringer for Ricky Gervais.

EDIT: You have 3 votes in this one if you please

GAA Discussion / Match day problem
April 15, 2009, 09:58:45 AM
Lads any ideas, so for this year my team has either been ahead or just 1 point behind at half time in every match. At the start of the second half we get blown out of the water, last nite it was 6 points before we got going again ourselves. Any ideas on what can be done at half time to keep the team on its toes?
