High Fielder

This should be a priority for the CB. They need to get both sides of the story and they need to mediate so that a resolution can be found. There is no such thing as the perfect scenario in all age groups for smaller clubs, which is why these arrangements exist in principle. There will always be the odd bumper harvest, a baby boom or an upsurge n interest, but this should never be mistaken for the norm. Clubs need to be mature enough to co exist with neighbours for the overall wellbeing of their underage players. This sort of stuff does not serve Laois well, but more importantly, it is harmful to the clubs themselves. Killeshin/Crettyard was a success story, and there is no reason why it can't be in the future.

hope your right high fielder ,dont think it will be resolved  could be something both teams regret but if one club is not happy what can you do ,thats the impressions for the last few years ,its not the kids that are the problem ,its the adults are the problem

As I said above, Laois' infrastructure and its mechanics are a soap opera.

In these sort of arrangements, I have seen first hand the pressure that exists to get everyone on the field. People can no longer accept that their youngster, their player, does not deserve to start. So some bright spark said when we have enough of one age group, we'll register them as a single team. This is not the first time this has happened. I think this is what brought Ballylinan Genmore to its knees as well. It needs to be discussed at length and arrangements need to be set in stone. There is a feeling of Open Season about everything we do, and it's very divisive. Talk about area teams and players getting access to senior football can be shelved until this sort of nonsense is resolved
Have to agree 100% Ballylinan went on their own a few years back due to one team initially pushing for it. The Rock split with St Pauls over one team. St Josephs and Barrowhouse probably over one player but it was hard to blame Barrowhouse. The word is that Crettyard pulled the trigger on their split with Killeshin while Kilcavan went on their own once they were able to. This is only football and hurling is probably similar.  Have to admire Stradbally Parish Gaels for going the distance. There is no problem with any club going on their own if they have the numbers but they can't have it everyway. Killeshin were dead right to pull the whole thing if Crettyard initiated the latest split. Why deal with a club who will let you down when it suits them.

SPG came very close to disbanding last year over the Stradbally name in the team's name and no recognition of the other 2 clubs
That and one club poaching another's players

Really Don

When was there poaching in the past few years?
Buggie

Interesting to see signs in Portlaoise town trying to recruit players to Clonad. Similar situation to Killeshin going into Graigue?
Not even remotely. Portlaoise patently can't handle the numbers in the town, this is a foolish riposte

As already outlined Clonad have long history of players from Portlaoise Portlaoise town can't even handle the number of kids to go to school in town. Kids from Portlaoise going to school as far as Timahoe and Emo. Gone are the days where you'd have 5-6 kids from same family on the one team.

It would be a much better system if any pupil going to The Heath etc would align to that GAA club as a result.

High Fielder

I like that idea Don, but would the home address not cancel out the school address?

Then go to a school in town.

High Fielder

It could be something worth looking at. It could help to regenerate the rural school (building and capacity) and contribute to the local GAA club. It's initiatives like that that will help to balance the numbers between town and country but as long as the home address dictates your club, this won't happen.

The Heath is in Portlaoise Parish. Home address means little in that regard. You go to school in The Heath, you play for The Heath. I could make an exception for "club of the parent".

I would like to see transfers on the basis of 'club of the parent' suspended until they progress out of U-17 and are into adult football, at least in cases where the transfers are within a parish. If the parents want them to play for their home club, and that club is within the parish, then they should bring them there as a 6 year old, don't wait until they are 12 or 13, showing some promise and an integral part of their team at their age grade, and then whip them out. If the player decides themselves to move as an adult then fair enough, but the original club have put the time and effort into developing them, and they shouldn't suffer because of a lack of foresight or laziness on the part of parents.

That's an excellent suggestion.

I don't as a matter of fact, but thank you for the heads up.

St. Paul's who have existed for the past 50 ??years  always seem to put in two teams if they have the numbers. We've played their second teams in lower divisions. Why couldn't Killeshin crettyard do that you name 17 I think on a panel possibly 15 and anyone outside that first 15 can play on both teams gives young lads who might not be as strong as others plenty of exposure to football.  Seems to work okay for Paul's anyway. With regards to school does a school rule not apply for young fellas going to play with clubs where they go to school
