I'm about to hit the big 30, a father who's never done a combat sport in my life unless you include club football. But now that I'm officially the man of a house I'm essentially the first line of defence and feel a bit inadequate if I was ever required to fight.

The question I ask is which martial art is best used in the street. As an observer I would say boxing maybe followed by karate or kickboxing. What do others think though? Would judo or MMA be more useful?

I'm talking basics here. Obviously a black belt in anyting will be able to handle themselves.

General discussion / The Forgotten Seven

Has anyone been watching this on TG4?

Each episode is a documentary about one of the seven of the 14 rebels executed after the Easter rising. These are the lesser known seven that did not sign the proclamation. I'm not sure how many documentaries have been on but I've seen the ones dedicated to Michael Mallin and Con Colbert. Two great shows. The courage those men showed was something else. But it's a massive pity that they probably died thinking that the public thought of them as parasites.

Has anyone seen it?

Please sign the petition above to stop the minority ruling the majority! The persistant denial of development in the west is corruption at it's finest and a message needs to be sent.

General discussion / Why hang a Jack Russel?

Why hang a Jack Russel?
I'm sure you've all read or heard that yesterday someone in Limavady saw fit to take a family owned Jack Russel out of its kennel and hang it to death. In the past few months we've also heard of people setting dogs on fire and sticking fireworks to cats. I remember when I was young I heard about boys in Strabane putting a cat in a plastic bag and playing football with it.

Am I missing something here? Why would someone commit an act of such evil against small animals? As a society we are more educated than ever. Even people who don't have an exam to their name still went to school and were taught the basics of right and wrong not that we should need school for that.

Basically what I'm asking is: Will an element of evil always exist in society no matter how well educated we are?

To posters of a more advanced stage in life than my 28 years: Has this sort of thing always gone on or is it a new phenomenon where people get a kick out of torturing and murdering defenseless animals?

All people in Ireland and all Irish citizens abroad should have the choice to vote for the president of Ireland.
