When was the last time that Sligo and Wicklow had managers from the same club?
Very disappointing to see only one Tourlestrane player on the county panel. Hopefully some will be drafted/will agree to join as the league progresses. Having said that, this is overall a very young panel which bodes well for the future and a good few of the U21 connacht winning team in there. Tough first game for us v Laois.

Unfortunately that has become a rather famiiar tale for the last few years now. It is remarkable that a team that has been so totally dominant in the county for the last decade or so is contributing so little to the county setup.
Big game on Sunday, you'd imagine Laois really should get promotion with little hassle but they've been in a bit of a rut over the last while so it mightn't be too easy to turn that around, and there are a few teams fancying a shot at getting out this time compared to the more predictable outcome that we had last year. Win that and we'll be in a good place, problem is you couldn't confidently bank on them beating any team, save maybe Waterford. The last game in Carrick is likely to be a crucial tie for one or both of the teams re the promotion race.
I can't believe Laois are in Division 4. Used always be a solid Div 2 team or so I thought.

Good result for London away to Wexford. 1-9 each goal in the 4th minute of injury time
Carlow Wicklow a draw also 2-10 each.

Good away win for Laois indeed. Our old habits of giving away the ball too easily returned and we got caught out a number of times. Still hopeful that we can produce a better result the next day. Not the start we hoped for especially playing at home.
One result tonight. Carlow 1-11 Waterford 0-10

Laois have had a good start but and in real transition and this division I think will be won by Sligo despite the 1sr day results
McConville might be doing a Gary Neville at this rate...
We (Laois) are three from three now but honestly were very unimpressive yesterday. I wouldn't suggest lumping on it or anything but I would give Wicklow a decent chance of turning us over next Saturday night in Portlaoise. It's a very flattering league table.
Surprise win for Wicklow in O'Moore park. Wexford with a comfortable win.

I wouldn't back against Laois but I knew it was a decent bet.
Laois had flattered a bit in Carlow and Sligo.
Luckily Laois are not facing Leitrim this weekend. Playing a poor Waterford team this weekend should give Laois a chance to regroup and hopefully revive their promotion challenge. With Donie Kingston not available, Laois are heavily reliant on Evan O'Carroll and with him being suspended for the Waterford game there was no focal point to our attack.
One match played tonight. Laois 2-13 Waterford 1-5
A six point win in Markievicz today that really should have been closer to twenty. One Sligo got on top as the first half wore on it was an impressive display right up to the Wexford sending off with about 15 mins to go, up 1-16 to 1-3 and with a chance to really push on and build up a score difference in case it might be needed, and while McEntee used the opportunity to give lads a run which is fair enough, his switch in the FB line cost us 1-1 within minutes of being made, and the general sloppiness never really went away til the end, another soft goal conceded in injury time and then Wexford hit the post right at the death. Fortunately two other subs Spillane and Walsh made their impact with some fine runs and scores otherwise it could have been a mortifying outcome. A good win to get despite that given how Wexford had done in recent games, but the ending does leave a bad taste. However Leitrim losing today means that promotion is in our hands, win both the remaining games and we're up and even a draw in Carrick will do if they can get the win in Carlow in two weeks.
After a poor start McConville seems to be getting a tune out of Wicklow, two good wins in a row now. But they'll need Leitrim to do them a favour in either of the last two games.
There is a fair old chance in the next round of results ourselves and Laois could be promoted with a game to spare.
If Sligo beat Carlow, Laois beat Leitrim and Wexford beat Wicklow we would both be up with a game to spare.
Obviously it could also go the opposite way too and tighten things up even further.
Wicklow backed up their impressive victory over Laois with another good victory yesterday. Two very winnable league games left for them as well. They may rue the two farcical goals they conceded to Carlow yet if they miss out on promotion by a point.
I'm expecting Laois v Leitrim will be a close enough game. From a Laois perspective, you would hope that we have the slightly more dangerous scoring threat that will get us over the line.
It's all up for grabs now if laois loose to leitrim but beat London it still won't be enough if wicklow win their two games .
But sligo v leitrim the last day could make for a twist too .
I think it will be wicklow and 1 other from Sligo laois and leitrim
Division 4 looks really interesting
Wicklow finishing strongly but would still expect the two favourites before the league started (Sligo, Laois) to gain promotion.
Two results from 5pm games
Waterford 2-9 London 2-5
Carlow 0-11 Sligo 2-10

Wicklow need us to win or draw and they will be promoted with us because of the head to head with Laois. Interesting side note is McEntee and McConville will be sharing notes on both leitrim and waterford during the week.
Winner takes all in our derby with Leitrim. A draw will do us too. Leitrim did fantastic to win today so they'll be on a high. Id have them as favorites at home. The score difference could screw us.
Cracking last day, last year they changed the days and times of the games to make it very unfair so this year id imagine it will all the same time. Hoping Leitrim v Sligo is on GAAGO.

Four at most. Laois looking for a Leitrim win if they can win in London. Wicklow need a Sligo win or draw to edge Laois on head to head (again if Laois beat London).

https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2023/0320/1364205-nfl-permutations-plot-lines-aplenty-ahead-of-final-day/
Sligo hold a two-point advantage over the other main promotion chasers, Leitrim, Wicklow and Laois, while Wexford, back on six points, have a miniscule chance.
A draw in Leitrim would be good enough for Tony McEntee's Sligo team but defeat would leave them sweating. If they were to lose and Laois won in London, they'd likely miss out as their scoring difference is currently just two points better off than the O'Moore County while Leitrim's would be guaranteed to be better.
Even if Wicklow win, along with Leitrim and Laois, to leave four teams on 10 points, Sligo would almost certainly miss out. In that scenario, Wicklow would need to be bettering Laois' winning margin by 19 points. In theory, bettering it by 18 points could be enough, but highest total scores for comes next after scoring difference and Laois hold the advantage there currently.
A draw in Leitrim will be enough for Paul Kilcoyne and Sligo
Laois will do what they can, a winning margin of more than a point in London, and hope for a favour from Andy Moran's Leitrim.
The fly in the ointment for them is Wicklow. If Sligo don't lose and Laois win, and Wicklow defeat Waterford, it will be Oisín McConville's side who go up as they have the head-to-head advantage over Laois.
If Sligo avoid defeat and Wicklow win, then it's a Crossmaglen one-two as McEntee and McConville's sides would populate the promotion places regardless of what Laois do in London.
Leitrim know that a win would all but guarantee their place in the league final. It would ensure that they finish above Sligo and even if Laois and Wicklow were to win, the latter would have to annihilate Waterford to overhaul them. Currently Leitrim's scoring difference is 23 points better than Wicklow's.
The fifth team that can go up is Wexford, but the Model County really would require a final day miracle.
They would need to defeat Carlow to move to eight points and they'd also require Sligo to beat Leitrim, Wicklow to lose in Waterford and Laois to lose in London.
That would leave Wexford, Wicklow, Leitrim and Laois all in a tie for second on eight points and it would come down to scoring difference. At just +2 currently, Wexford would also need some big winning and losing margins to come into play.

Lowry from Laois ended up on a stretcher and in Sligo hospital. Laois were trying to break out fast out of defence at the end and Lowry was taken out of it off the ball. I don't know what happened but the Leitrim player got black carded.
Wicklow and Sligo go up. How did Laois throw it away?
Andy Moran wasn't happy at the end of the game, felt the ref blew up a minute early. Sets up the Connacht meeting very nicely providing they overcome London and New York.
Wicklow did well to claim a promotion spot, that win against Laois proved key.

Sligo score at end, lad took about 15 steps.
As in other games we made life far harder for ourselves than it needed to be, but they dug it out at the end when it looked to have slipped away so credit where credit is due. After 4-5 pretty bleak years at senior level to get promotion and back up to D3 was vital, so hopefully they can build on it and see where the championship will take us. Big disappointment for Leitrim when they were on top for much of the last 20 odd minutes.
Best of luck to our nicest Connacht neighbours in the Final.

FT Sligo 2-10 Wicklow 0-14. Well done to Sligo a nice boost to win a trophy in Croke Park as they make the trip to London in a couple of days.

Niall Murphy is a class act.
Wicklow won the Tommy murphy cup.
Decent standard I thought for division four. Sligo were a bit better tbh. Murphy could get scores when they got the ball in and Wicklow had less options / were that bit more open.

Always had thst cushion on a miserable night for football.
Good thing is both teams go up so progress for Wicklow also.
My predictions for Division 4 2024.
1. Laois
2. Longford
3. Wexford
4. Tipperary
5. Carlow
6. Leitrim
7. London
8. Waterford
This is going to be one hell of a Group.
I hope to get to most of the games. Not sure I have attended a football match in Waterford.
South of the Bann may be close - but I think Wexford are in the mix.
So for me it's Laois, Wexford and Longford (I hope) duelling it out for promotion.
With 4 home games and trips to Laois, Waterford and Wexford it will certainly be a Magical Mystery Tour.
I think Leitrim could be in the mix. Were they not very unlucky last year?

Leitrim did the hard work last year beating Laois but then fell flat against Sligo.
Actually finished 5th in the end up which if i'm not mistaken effected them in their Tailteann cup seeding.
Opening game massive for both Laois and Longford who ever wins that will have a big say in what happens later on. Andy Moran will be expected to deliver for Leitrim although Keith Beirne is a big loss.

Laois full value for their win. Score flattered us. Their goalie was immense - played as a 3rd midfielder for most of the game. Scored 3 points and stopped at least one almost-certain goal.

I must find more enjoyable ways of torturing myself!
Two big wins for Laois at the beginning of the league. Should have too much for Carlow, Waterford, Leitrim and London and with Tipperary in re-build mode I'd expect them to finish the campaign with seven wins and 14 points. The real test of this Laois side to see what kind of improvements have they made will be in the Tailteann Cup when they face some of the higher ranked sides.
Tipperary got back on track with a good win in Longford - Semple Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for Laois in recent years. Leitrim tripped up Laois last year and will be hopeful of a repeat. Laois V Carlow is a local derby where form goes out the window. Wexford are still capable of claiming one the the top spots. I would not rule out any of those 5 teams at this stage and indeed Longford could still be in the running if they win all their remaining games.

The expectation alright. Waterford's last 16 Div 4 games has been 14 defeats, one win against London at home last year and draw at home to Tipp in 2022.
We laboured to a 3 pt win in dire conditions. A game to forget really. Late switch to Ballygunnar grounds. How in the name of f**k can a club as famous as Ballygunnar not have a stand?
Good result for London less so for Tipp. 1-8 to 0-11
Another result Leitrim 3-7 Wexford 2-9. Three goals for Ryan O'Rourke including the last score of the game a penalty in the 74 minute.
Next week:
Wexford v Waterford
Longford v London
Carlow v Leitrim
Tipperary v Laois
It was one of the most dubious penalty decisions you will ever likely see that cost Wexford in the end. I'm not sure what the referee thought he saw. With the head to head rule it pretty much now ends Wexford's promotion push for this year which is unfortunate for them.
At the end of last season, it looked like the wheels were starting to come off for Leitrim and with a few of their better players not available this season I thought they would struggle to be in the shape up for promotion. Glad to see I was wrong with three wins from three to start the league.
Laois only had five starters to team that lost to Down in Tailteann Cup. Chalk and cheese to compare this year's side to last year in terms of structure, game play and buy in from players to what McNulty is trying to achieve.
Next Week in Div 4:
Carlow v Wexford
Laois v London
Tipperary v Waterford
Longford v Leitrim
Div 4 hotting up.
We has a less than convincing win over London but still 2 points.
For Longford it's really down to next week's game at home to Leitrim. Win and we have a solid shout of being in the mix. Lose or draw and it's curtains.
Smart money will be on Leitrim. We have been very unconvincing so far.

Seriously though, it was great to see the passion in Doctor Cullen Park with the last minute goal to seal victory over Leitrim. It is a real pity these games are not giving more time/consideration in the Sunday night show. Considering that the games that do get most air-time were already shown on RTE or TG4 live already it would be nice to see more focus to the stand out game in the lower divisions.

Think CB saw the succes of football as a threat to the hurling. Banned dual players at underage. They won Munster in 2020 but a couple lads that left returned to panel due the pandemic.
Have been hit with number of key players leaving the panel in recent years.
Quote from: Armagh18 on March 03, 2024, 09:22:30 PMMadness. Always liked Tipp I think from they beat Galway that time in 2016 and they caught us in Armagh in the league game as well that either cost us promotion or relegated us one year which was sickening. Is Quinlivan still playing? Great player.
That was some day out , Quilivan Hat Trick , the winning goal with 6 seconds to go . Quinlivan living in Dundalk now , probably continue to Play with Commercials . If Mickey Harte was still Louth Manager would he be tempted ? Anyhow we have brought in a lot of young Players this year and lost a lot of quality , Kevin Fahey for example gone travelling . New Manager and 8-9 of our starters this year it`s their first year playing Senior . Still Sweeney, Russell and Steven O`Brien to return from injury so not all doom and gloom for The Premier ! As our Manager Paul Kelly said we were naive yesterday and should have won but the inexperience showed and not just yesterday . It`s a learning curve . So hopefully with the return of the 3 above mentioned we will give promotion a shot next year .

Must be frustrating for the genuine football people in Tipp though.
Yous had the makings of a team to be competitive with Cork and Kerry on a more regular basis there.
Remember they beating us [Derry] as well to make the quarters in 2016. Both the full forward Quinlivan and Sweeney well stood out.
Colin O'Riordan, who went playing AFL, was another quality forward.
They would be an excellent football county but hurling is just dominant in the hearts and minds.

Was a rumour doing the rounds last year that he was transferring to Silverbridge.
Looking back now, that Tipperary minor winning team deserves even more credit that they possibly get. The Dublin team that they defeated that day was considered one of Dublin's finest ever minor teams and many of them went on to backbone the all conquering 6 in a row All-Ireland side. Kilkenny, Mannion, McCaffrey, McDaid, Costello, Lowndes and Small were all starters on the team and Niall Scully was only a sub. It was an incredible feat looking back now. Thanks to Covid lockdowns they were able to get some of the stars of that team back for the year they won Munster. A nice reward for those mentors and coaches who invested so much time, energy and commitment into underage football in Tipperary during the mid to late 00s and early 2010s.
The 2020 Munster final on the centenary of Bloody Sunday was really special

Venue for Tipperary v Wexford changed from Templetuohy to Enniscorthy - Tipp conceding home advantage.
Very unfair on the other counties involved in the promotion race.
With the way the remaining fixtures play out, Tipperary are still not out of the running for promotion as they have Wexford and Leitrim in their final two games. Win both of those and then it comes down to Longford beating Carlow and home and then Wexford beating Longford at home in the final round of games and they will finish level on points with a number of other teams in second. Score difference will become the deciding factor then. By conceding home advantage it appears that they are waving the white flag to trying to gain promotion from the league this year.

Yeah if Tipp beat Wexford they have a gimme next weekend v Leitrim so definitely not out of the running but it would be unlikely.
Due to the weather there are no Pitches available in Tipp except for Fethard Town Park , an All Weather Field which Wexford would not agree to and from what I hear most Tipp Players did not want it there either . Semple Stadium was closed for all games a couple of weeks ago for a month !
Results
London 1-13 Waterford 0-11 (London's first win of this league, Waterford haven't won a league game for two years)
Longford 0-14 Carlow 0-8 (Longford looking good to bonce straight back to Div 3)
A surprise result in O'Moore park with Leitrim beating Laois 0-17 to 1-13.
Tipp v Wexford called off.
Longford v Carlow not one for a dvd collection. A win is a win.
Poor from Tipp. Second biggest county in Ireland had no pitch. All not well I hear with Tipp management on verge of quitting over perceived lack of support from County Board..
Surprised that Leitrim beat Laois but it will be academic if we beat Wexford next Sun. Laois will surely beat Waterford.
From Tipperary GAA Twitter:
FIXTURE CONFIRMED: The #AllianzLeagues Division Four game - @TipperaryGAA
v @OfficialWexGAA
- will now take place tomorrow, Sunday March 17, at Fethard Town Park, 4pm throw-in

A shame and disgrace from Tipp co board. They've surely the talent in the county to be at least a strong division 3 if not lower end division two team. Its not as though the hurlers are cleaning up anyway so no point using that as an excuse. Said it here before a real pity and I always liked Tipp as a team.

First time hearing this , I been to every Tipp game this year bar London and I know people on the Tipp Football Committee and the FoTF and have heard nothing . Do you have a source for this Info ?
I heard from what I would consider a good source in Longford that would have their ear to the ground (don't want to go any further than that).
But if it's rubbish then that's fine and really happy to hear it.
Half time scores

Waterford 0-3 Laois 4-9
Wexford 2-10 Longford 1-3

The tension is unbearable
Leitrim 0-15 Tipp 0-9. Leitrim are promoted along with Laois.
Wexford 2-18 Longford 2-9
Waterford: 0-9 Laois: 5-19
Carlow 1-17 London 1-11
You have to feel for Wexford.
Well done Laois and Leitrim. Wexford beat us off the park today. We were outclassed everywhere. Their half backs were monsters and we couldnt cope.
Another year in Div 4 and, tbh, it's where we belong.

;D
Apparently this will be only the 6th time ever in the history of the GAA that a Leitrim men's football side will play in Croke Park.
Best of luck to the neighbours and their Roscommon native manager.
Leitrim score the first point. There is great noise from the crowd.
A goal for Laois, not the best of defending by Leitrim leaving number 12 Shaun Fitzpatrick totally unmarked. 1-3 to 0-3 after 19 minutes of action.
A Cavan man in goal for Leitrim and Clare man in goal for Laois.
Half time Laois 1-7 Leitrim 0-6
Laois getting frees a lot easier.
That last one was not a free, O'Carroll held on to the corner back arm and just then went down. Made ut look so obvious, well to everybody but the ref.
Game over.
Laois far too good. They look much physically stronger.

Laois 14 point winners. Leitrim fell away badly it was 1-8 to 0-9 after 47 mins.

Getting out of d4 ahead of Wexford was the real achievement for Leitrim. They don't have the panel to compete with Laois who shouldn't really have been in d4 in the first place
Quote from: seafoid on March 30, 2024, 07:20:30 PMLaois who shouldn't really have been in d4 in the first place
What does that actually mean though? Laois were very deservedly relegated from D3 to D4 two years ago and failed last year to get back up.
Laois wouldn't be entitled to any delusions of grandeur about not being a D4 team. We've a lot to do to get back to being at the level we were at 15 to 20 years ago.
In football, Derry were in the Div. 4 Final five years ago and got their house in order, via clubs, a progressive county board and a plan.
Look where they're at now.
A good template to use for other counties who want to improve their lot.
