Title: End of an Era
Post by: Jinxy on August 22, 2018, 12:53:26 PM
The Big Tree is closing down.  :'(

Animals roaming the bar, Sam Maguire going 'missing' and Cavan's big day out - staff share memories as iconic GAA pub set to close

'Some staff members have less enjoyable memories about culchies descending on Dorset Street, however.

"That time Cavan got to Croke Park for the first time in years back in 2013 was like the animals in Dublin Zoo had been let loose," says one former barman, choosing to remain anonymous for fear of a Cavan reprisal.

"I was trying to get through the crowd with about ten empty pint glasses when these bunch of yahoos decided to try tickle me. Glasses smashed everywhere and I prayed that day that Cavan would never get to Croke Park again," he laughs.'

I think I was only in there a couple of times myself mind.
Always preferred Gills or Phil Ryans.
Where does everyone here typically go to meet up and/or have a couple of pints before heading in for the game?

Yahoo's. I love that word.

For me it's Johnson in Newbridge. #newbridgeornowhere

Yea Gills or Ryans myself. The odd one in the Old Triangle.

Liam Mc Carthy was in there sunday evening. Haven't been inside it in years. Cassidys before and Gills after for me.

Is it right Gills only opens on match days?

Fagans - although it was 10 deep outside on Sunday so I can't imagine there was much movement inside.

Some amount of hotels flying up in Dublin.
I could see the govt cracking down on AirBnB before long.

Meaghers - always busy but a huge yard and outside bar means there is always space to stand and chat with your group.

The Hut in Phibsboro is another great spot if you've parked around there.

The Hideout is back on the go too.
I hadn't been there until after the U20 final, but it's a decent tidy-up job on what was a good, but smell little spot...

Never liked the Big Tree to be honest.

You should pop upstairs in Mayes Dinny, you'll be made feel very welcome  ;)

Meaghers or McGraths usually if I was going for a pint.

One pub I always refused outright to go anywhere near was Quinns.
Possibly unfair, but I always assumed it would be full of first year Ag students.

McGraths

Always found Gills to be a bit of a kip.

Does anyone go to MacGowans - I would think it would be good but i never be coming in that way.

Quinns is a kip.

Does anyone bother with Kennedy's on the Drumcondra Road?

Quinn's had sewage and dead rats sloshing about the cellar a few years ago. It's in a prime location but better alternatives nearby.

McGowans in Phibsboro? It's not bad but it's slightly off the track. More for a night out then around a match kind of spot.

When I was Belfast based back in the days of black and white TV it was The Cat & Cage.  More recently the Big Tree and Gill's.

If Cavan ever make it to Croke Park again, I guarantee Quinns is where the unwashed hordes will set up shop now that the Big Tree is gone.
They can tickle away to their hearts content in there.

We used to head to Quinns without fail but when the picture of the raw sewage leaking all over the kegs and stuff in the basement surfaced that was the end of that.

Yes - the Brian Boru. Always a big Meath crowd and they have Beamish. I remember a few of us chatting to Brendan Gleeson in there after a Meath-Dublin match - strictly football talk, fan to fan and no mention from either side of who he was or that we knew who he was.

The Temple/Kavanagh's

Was there on my last visit to Croke Park a decent spot with good pub food. Haven't been to the Big Tree since 2011 was after the Donegal v Kildare quarter final. Donegal supporters were over the moon to win that game little did they know they would be celebrating All Ireland win the following year.
