Not one bit surprised Junior, managers are like sheep, what works for one they all will try, with no regard for the future health of the player or the fact that all players are not teachers or work in an office. Having said that the problem could be down to under recovery rather than over training.
True, I think under recovery is the problem in the weaker counties where managers are depending on a few top players to carry the team whereas in the stronger counties lads are training their butts off to clinch a place in the team and disregarding their own health in the process..

Work underway on new terraces at O'Moore Park, which is to be upgraded to 25 thousand capacity
O'Moore Park set for €1m upgrade
21 May 2015
O'Moore Park is to receive a €1 million makeover in a bid to attract more high-profile games to Laois GAA headquarters.
Works have already started on the upgrade which is in response to a recent Health and Safety report which capped the Portlaoise venue's capacity at just 18,000. The improvements will see the capacity restored to about 25,000.
According to Midlands 103, the three terraces at the ground will have all stairwells and handrails replaced, a new walkway and support wall is to be built behind the main terrace, the toilets at the Abbeyleix Road end have been demolished and will be rebuilt, while all other toilet blocks in the stadium are to be refurbished.
A new press box will also be constructed on the main terrace.
Laois GAA has received €800,000 from Central Council, with the remainder of the project to be funded by Leinster Council. The project will take 22 weeks to complete.

Wow !!! The best article I've read on this issue.
It's a great article and it might even work, given half a chance. I've never agreed with professionalism in the GAA but if transfers of players could be kept out of it then I think I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Junior
I've posted on this a few times before and I still think the only way this will work is to move away from the " County" model towards a number of super clubs based around major population areas.
The traditional club(rural) as we know it would continue more or less as it is today all amateur.
The elite player would however move/ transfer to the super clubs much like what happened in Rugby.
We're a bit away from this scenario yet but the gap between the top and 3or 4 was never more apparent and growing, something has to give.
Rugby was in this same situation 20 years ago and many said at the time it will never happen but happen it did and almost overnight.

I really wish everyone would stop talking about playing Dublin before they play Wicklow. They're really lining themselves up for a nasty fall....
1 : "It would have been a big event, the All-Ireland champions coming down to wherever it is, Wicklow or Laois. It's huge and should be huge."
2 : "But two teams now have to travel for no reason and we're supposed to have a home game — or Wicklow are supposed to have a home game."
Woops - I'd take that back if I was you, Giovanni. Looks like Begley was very respectful - you were just too lazy to read the article.
Another one of your typically asinine comments....
Until Wicklow lads are quoted in the same article saying the same things, I remain of the strong view that it's better to keep the mouth shut.
The same approach might serve you well on occasion
Colm Begley was asked what did he make of the decision to play Dublin in KK if Laois beat Wicklow. He gave an answer to the effect of "If Wicklow win or if Laois win, it would have been nice to play in their prospective back yards."
You're clearly wrong. He has the right to answer that question (why should he not) and he did so very respectfully.

Just seeing this now. I'd love to know how much of a structure Dublin had before the money started rolling in. I suspect that all they had was a plan and Croke Park jumped at it. The fact is that Croker sees a block of Dublin supporters (1.5m of them) as a single unit of customers and compares that to the 33 other teams, none of whom come close to those sort of numbers. Offaly wins an All Ireland, 80,000 people happy. Dublin wins, it's 1.5m.
Dublin came up with a plan (or were told to), the plan is funded, then all and sundry justify the funding. Volunteerism? How many in clubs around Laois are not volunteers. They hardly reinvented the wheel there.
I'd love to see the funding stopped and see how Dublin fares after. This is the end justifying the means. At this stage, the rest of the country is on catch-up. GAA in Dublin is sexy, because winning is sexy. If the GAA are not careful, we'll have such a boring championship because Dublin will keep winning. When Croker kills the golden goose, who will answer for that?
Having said all that, the CB have to step up to the plate now. We do have (4/5) GDOs that my club has not seen in about three years. Apart from the odd match for their own club or Cul Camp weeks, I'd say nearly the entire CB has not been out to our club in that time. There's no proactive thinking at all. They get a reasonable idea (eg OMP Experience night) and run it until people are bored of it.
What club are you? The two hurling lads have been out to us for some great sessions on a regular basis. In fairness to them they come any time we ask them. I agree with you on the Experience Night. Time to bin it or replace it with something else.
Just one question...Exactly who's bored of the experience night....can't be the kids cos it should be new kids coming through at least every 2 years so therefore it must be the adult mentors/club officials. That's part of the underage problem. Adults get bored and stale. Instead of renewing and reinvigorating the whole set up it eventually just fades off and kids suffer. It's not entirely the adults fault. They should be helped to maintain their interest and upskill themselves. Hopefully the likiof these new pathway workshops will be the start of that
What are the workshops? When are they?

NFL DIVISION 3
Meaney and Lillis add to Laois injury woes ahead of clash with Tipperary
Experienced duo added to lengthy list of absentees
Rory Delaney
21 Feb 2017
Laois senior footballers have been dealt yet more misfortune on the injury front as both Kevin Meaney and Kieran Lillis look set to miss this Saturday's game against Tipperary in O'Moore Park.
Meaney picked up an injury in the loss to Armagh last weekend, and it has not responded to treatment as well as was hoped. Kieran Lillis suffered a hamstring injury in training last week, and he too looks set to miss the game with Tipp.
They join an ever-increasing list of absentees for manager Peter Creedon. The Cork man revealed to the Leinster Express yesterday that Brendan Quigley was still six weeks away from action, with John O'Loughlin 'touch and go' to feature this weekend. The game against Sligo in Round 4 is more likely to see his return.
Gary Walsh, who missed the Armagh game with a hamstring injury, will hopefully be part of the panel for Saturday night, while Evan O'Carroll could also make the subs bench, after he played for Crettyard Gaels in the Kelly Cup over the weekend.
Damien O'Connor has also returned to training after his collar bone injury, but he has not yet been cleared to take part in any contact sessions. Mark Timmons also remains on the long-term injury list after hip surgery.
Laois will be looking to carry the good form shown in the closing stages of the win over Armagh into this Saturday's clash with Tipperary. Division 3 is already shaping up to be as tight as everyone expected, with just two points separating Sligo in second with Armagh in seventh.
Throw in this Saturday night is at 7pm, with the game also live on Eir Sport.

The man has premium tickets for Anfield and sponsors the rugby club in Portarlington. Baffling isn't the word
I'm glad to see Laois GAA distancing themselves from these comments. GAA in Laois at juvenile level has been in decline when with the population growth the county has witnessed in last decade or more it should really be the opposite. Maybe Laois county board should look at structures they have in place at present and identify how they are promoting and developing football and hurling in the county. If you make a sport appealing to children at a young age and get them involved through their schools and clubs then they will want to play. Blaming the influence of other sports for me is a lazy excuse. Naturally, you will lose a few talented players to other sports when they get to a certain age but that has always been the case. However, if lads see poor structures, little chance for success etc. then you are likely to lose even more than you should.

Good article from Joe Brolly on it here
http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/joe-brolly-super-eight-proposals-are-a-private-club-for-the-big-counties-a-commercial-juggernaut-35475716.html
I'm in two minds . On one hand it will definetly add and create a different kind of excitement to the summer . On the other hand it would be unlikely for counties such as Tipp to reach an All Ireland Semi Final again given the Super 8 set-up . Lots more pros and cons but maybe it's worth a go . A shake up is needed .

One thing from Brolly's article that's worth noting is the extra revenue from TV, tickets and sponsorship that this will generate.
We all know how the GAA works, if they fall upon something that boosts the coffers, that something is here to stay.
If this is given 3 years the GAA are then able to show the massive increase in revenue it produced, and then what they are particularly good at is showing us how we all benefitted from this money "trickling down". If it get's in, it's here far beyond the 3 years.
I don't see anything it it except giving more chances to the stronger status quo and reducing the chances of those trying to catch up.
Oh, and the extra money!
It's not proving very popular according to this poll:

Creedon: we'll shake hands after
22 February 2017
There will be no room for sentiment when Peter Creedon sends his Laois players out on to the O'Moore Park field for Saturday night's Division 3 encounter against his former Tipperary charges.
The Cork native laid the foundations for the Premier County's run to last year's All-Ireland SFC semi-final during his spells as minor, U-21 and senior manager.
"I've worked with all of the Tipp players, many of them for nearly ten years, so they'll be trying to get one over on me and I'll be trying to get one over on them," he remarked to The Irish Independent.
"We'll go at it hard for the match and then shake hands after.
"I wasn't one bit surprised at Tipp's emergence, they'd been knocking on the door in previous years. There's huge talent within that squad, they'll be hoping to push on and will be a huge challenge on Saturday night.
"I'd be hoping Tipp will do very well in the league and push on in the Munster Championship but on Saturday night I'll be planning the best performance for Laois."
Creedon is planning without the services of Kevin Meaney and Kieran Lillis who both picked up knocks in recent weeks while midfielder Brendan Quigley is not set to return for another six weeks at least.
The Super 8 is a crock of shit.

Yeats County guilty of breaking subs rule?
http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=271835
If my memory is correct didnt Kildare fall foul of a similar situation a few years back (Ironically against Sligo). And Sligo's manager is Niall Carew who was involved with Kildare at the time. Or was it Sligo who fell foul ????
I think the Kildare subs controversy was against Offaly back in 2006.
Twice in two consecutive years.
The first time was the first game of the 2002 league which was Micko's last year. Kildare and Sligo drew in Newbridge in the first game of the campaign. It was the first year of the blood sub rule which there was some confusion over. Kildare used six subs and Sligo were awarded the points.
The following year Kildare beat Sligo in Markievicz Park by a point. Kildare hadn't listed their substitutes on the teamsheet and Sligo objected. The game was replayed at the end of the league which Sligo then won and Kildare were relegated.
Carew wouldn't have been involved in either year.

Brilliant tribute to the great Ross Munnelly, what a fantastic player...

What a player he was at his peak, a great servant to his club and county. He would be one off the Leinster winning team that would make an all time great laois team IMO (alongside Tom Kelly and Joe Higgins).
My main memory of him was the 2005 Leinster final when although they lost they lost the fact that they should have won was due mainly to Ross. I had the perfect view a couple rows from the front of the upper Hogan that day, he was telling players to get out of the way and make room for him, as he would sprint from one side of the pitch to the other to win possession and take on the Dublin's defence, demanding the ball off his team mates when Laois needed it most, scoring points, setting up team mates and winning frees. He was incredible to watch.
The other memory is of watching Arles Kilcruise play in their first Leinster championship game on TG4 24 hours after winning their first county title (a disgrace of course), we saw the professionalism of all the Arles players that day but in particular Chris Conway and Ross. The fact the they won was incredible.
We've had some fantastic forwards during my time watching Laois ( 50 years ;D) some with outstanding natural talent and much acclaimed.
But for me, for his ability ( he must be our all time highest scorer no) his determination his longevity and most of all for his attitude Ross would be by far the best Laois forward I have seen.
It would be great to keep him involved in years to come. What a great attitude he has, toss up between him and Cahir Healy as most committed, dedicated Laois GAA player. Would love to see him in underage development - he speaks very well and has time for everyone. He's really someone to look up to in Laois GAA.
He should be brought in as a GDO alongside Colm Begley even if it means moving someone elsewhere. The kids really look up to him and he has a great work ethic.

Agree but dont hold your breadth. The present set up is embedded and will take a lot of changes at the top for that to happen. The
GDAs as they stand have been a total failure ( Begley, a recent addition is not included in that opinion).
That may be so but are they getting the support they need.
It was disappointing to see Laois u16s getting a bad beating from Meath in the Gerry Reilly Cup at the weekend. A reflection on the under age coaching in the county again?
I thought this team was supposed to be fairly good.

They aren't looking to fund a laois Gda,they are looking to fund their OWN one,the 2 clubs are going to fund a GDA to work exclusively within the 2 clubs, they are also looking to offer considerably above the €28k in order to find the right candidate.

It's actually very good thinking if you think about it. Same weekend as the picnic. What would 2/3 days in Stradbally cost you? I'd imagine this didn't cost them anymore. There was never any danger of games clashing with it, considering the weekend that was in it. So flights etc could be booked well in advance.
Great organisation, innovation and dedication. Well done McNulty et al.

Some very prominent club officials couldn't wait to get rid of him, the county board didn't exactly fight to keep him and now we want him to go away, study other models of excellence and come back and implement it here.
Ignoring the fact that he already did this here 5 years ago!
The CB should hang their heads in shame over the way Cheddar was treated at the end.
After everything he gave to the Laois set up it was a joke the way he was treated.
Best of luck if he gets involved with Dublin, he is better off away from this county.

Couldnt agree more. Jesus what I'd give to get Cheddar into the County Board Chairmans role, could you imagine?
It's a disgrace the way the county board handled the whole Cheddar situation. It's a pity common sense couldn't prevail and Cheddar was given a role within Laois hurling.
Maybe a board shake up will see him being asked back in in some capacity.
What is the job situation with Cheddar? Maybe he's not in a position to give all his time.

No but it is a valid question. Hard to see value for money in Laois. We haven't been competitive in either code at any level or age group for many years.
We can't stand on both sides of the fence. We can't argue that we need more money to be successful because Dublin got more, while at the same time denying that counties that got less than us are more successful.
I'm not looking to blame anyone individually, but it would seem our county development model is not working. I have had some experience of the hurling development squads over the last five or six years and I have to say hand on heart it hasn't been great. Similarly our Setanta programme has been poor in terms of the coaching delivered. Some of our intercounty players have been involved and while I thank them for their effort, their coaching skills leave a lot to be desired. It takes years to become an effective coach and some of the greatest hurlers make the worst coaches.
Development squads can only be as good as the players coming from the clubs and as anyone involved in underage coaching will tell you, that is a very mixed bag.
Forget about the development squads, put more resources into up-skilling club coaches and you will see better county teams.

On the topic of development squads, some of the underage hurling squads aren't bothering with running trials this year.
Whoever was on last years squad will do for this year.
Disgraceful

There's a lot to play with. Dublin would have been successful, simply with the money. That this f**king "plan" is there as well, is either a smoke & mirrors job, but producing some good or is actually working and
The financial doping of Dublin has and is continuing to be a disgraceful blight on the GAA. If the CP plan was to make them successful, then the tap should have been turned off after 2011. If the Dublin plan was to completely dominate football, then they want the tap to keep flowing.
One journalist made a good point, in that he said that the Dubs are getting money based on potential numbers, but spending it on much smaller, current numbers.
The money without the plan would have worked. The plan without the money would never have worked. Therefore, the money is the key and thus we have financial doping.
Re Laois, I think that we have (at least) four issues:
(1) We're too small. We've a population that puts us in the bottom 10 in the country and it tells.
(2) We're a dual county. We have divided the county 1/3rd hurling, 2/3rds football. That leaves both our hurling county (c.28,000) and our football county (c.56,000) even further down the pecking order. It's also reduces focus, even within the 'other' area.
Ideally, we pick one sport and drive our way forward with that.
(3) Our structures are not good. Our CB has lacked leadership for years and permitted such debacles as the 2014? SFC to happen, when they should have faced down the clubs and stuck to the agreement, that EVERY club agreed to for that championship. We have had problems with clubs sidling into B & C competitions, just to win shitty titles, instead of aiming for the top division as much as possible. It should be an honour to hurl or kick ball in the A and B or C should be entered into, when you've really no choice.
We have 48 clubs in 26 parishes (or so), which is retarded and lazy. Galway, in the 1960s, FORCED clubs within parishes to amalgamate. We could still have as many leagues & teams, just amongst fewer clubs. We'd also have a richer, more competitive pool of players in our top divisions. Of course, that would mean less money for the CB.
(4) Generally, we're a poor county. If we had fewer clubs to run and more people per club, we could manage to start financing our clubs to better standards.
Do we have the leadership to restructure the club setup, impose rules on clubs, implement a county-wide plan and use the funding wisely? Just not sure that we do.

I want to compliment Laois Today on their excellent reporting on all things Laois including the sport reports. Reporting is almost instant after matches and great for ex pats like myself. I was able to access most match results on Saturday evening and yesterday. The result from the Kileen/mountmellick intrigued me. Kileen including the Kingstons were hammered by Intermediate outfit Mountmellick. Are the wheels falling off the Kileen wagon... :'(

Killeen had 14 men for most of the game. Might have been a factor. But long term Killeen are going backwards.

Love him or hate him it's hard to disagree with any of the factual information he has supplied. Facts are that the GAA has massively favoured Dublin in money terms over the past 10 years and they are showing the benifits now. Fair play to them but it's still totally unfair on the rest of the country.
With regards to the funding Dublin get directly from the GAA, how has it been allowed to go on by the rest of the counties and when are they going to say stop enough is enough.

Clueless. The money was given to the GAA. The LGFA have consistently turned down advances regarding a proper amalgamation with the GAA.
Ask yourself this question. If Michael O'Leary threw a million euro at the LGFA in the morning, should the local GAA club be entitled to cut?

It's bullshit. How many f**king age grades do we need?
Sure it's no more than before I think. U13 replaced 12, 15 replaced 14, 17/16, 19/18,and 21 became 20. I think they may be phasing out u21 in a year or two. It moves lads strong years away from exam years apparently
The under 19 is a good idea. Lets next year under 20 manager look at every young lad in the county.
There really is no need for an under 21 club championship though. It's crazy having it and it won't start for another few weeks!

Of course you did, you have a strong panel up to that age.
Doesn't make it right.
If you stop underage football after U19 a lot of lads could be left in limbo with having little or no football if they do not make the transition to senior straight away. I can't see a problem with running an U21 competition if a different time of year was found for it within calendar. With Portlaoise's dominance at senior level set to last for another decade or more it will probably be the last chance most footballers in Laois have of winning a county championship title with their club.
Has the U20 grade disappeared or something?

Can they not play Junior? If they're not fit to at least be a sub for a Junior side at the age of 19, what are they planning on doing?
All underage championships should be played during summer when lads are off school/college and before club championship is up and running in earnest. It's not like there's 20 games for each club to play....... how much football did lads of 19 play from March on to July. Just club league I reckon. Would 3 or 4 u20/21 matches do any harm. A few elite players might be affected but not by a whole lot. Shoehorning it in in October when a lot of clubs are finished 3 or 4 weeks is an insult to the competition in my opinion
Underage competitions played wholly during the school holidays are a pain in the arse from a mentor and scheduling viewpoint as you have any number of chaps away on hols and in the Gaeltacht.
More games could and should be played in September
And then you'll have lads playing with adult teams and away in college for the likes of u19 /20. There's no ideal time but an October start is a hike

Have to agree with you. If a chap isn't playing adult by 19, I think we can forget about him.
We had a system that was working well and kept fellas playing until they were 21. Many had passed through college before they were overage. It was win-win for GAA clubs.
It was a simple system of 12/14/16/18/21.
One rule fucked it all up- changing the age that you were allowed play adult at from 16 to 17. (Are you listening L. O' Neill?).
Now we are pussyfooting around trying to rectify a self inflicted problem.
Some counties have changed like us to 11/13/15/17....some haven't. It's a joke trying to get challenge games.

You probably have, but the aim and ethos is community involvement and fellas who drifted a bit at 18/19 were often coaxed back at 20/21 to play with their mates.
The implications that "do-gooder" decision has had is very frustrating.

This was discussed a few months ago on a different thread and someone said it was to undergo a major revamp but nothing seems to be happening. Its very up to date on fixtures and results but the rest of it leaves a lot to be desired..
Agreed the fixtures / results are excellent but I would like majority done through an automated system like sportlomo.
The rest of it is pure brutal.
It needs a volunteer to step up and take it on. Someone from the communications sub committee or an external person to go in there and just run it unilaterally. Cahir Healy in todays indo. A great read. Also worth checking out Paul Coady on twitter about Carlow hurling. Pity no one from the big counties will stand up and come out with some sense. Fair play to the 2 lads.
'Semi-professionalism is like the GAA's Brexit and we're teetering on the edge of a cliff right now'
When laid up rehabbing a second cruciate knee ligament injury in as many years, there's a lot of time to think about matters close to the heart and Laois dual star Cahir Healy has a lot to get off his chest.
Without the usual fear of a newspaper appearance possibly affecting his playing performance, Healy tells it as he sees it - the "alienation" of county players from their clubs top of his agenda.
The Portlaoise defender describes "feeling like a stranger in my own club" when he attends league games which he can't play in due to county involvement, and he's calling on the GAA to go back to the future.
He feels the principles of the GAA have been lost in the continuous expansion of the all-conquering inter-county scene and believes the emphasis must revert back to clubs before it's too late.
Citing the example of international soccer and rugby, Healy suggests that inter-county players should stay with their clubs throughout the season and only be released for county duty for the week of a game.
"County players get the worst deal of everyone. They have a s**t schedule with their county and they never get to play with their clubs, while club players don't know what's going on for half of the year," Healy says.
"I hear about the split season and it scares me because county players are so alienated from their clubs in my opinion that you're just going to alienate them more if you say, 'Don't go near the club for six months'.
"To me, it's a simple fix: you play with your club all of the time. County training is banned except for the week your team is playing a match and you police it by having no expenses, no insurance. There's no money there to pay for it all.
"Streamline the county games throughout the year. If you take the 12-14 games between league and championship, space them out every second week and have 24 weekends of the year for county games.
"Why can't a county manager just pick a squad that he gets access to the week of a championship match? So that's a minimum of 12 weeks' action for each county over seven or eight months with roughly 30 weekends left for club action.
"That's 30 weekends for the county board to run competitions and have clubs thriving. Otherwise, the GAA club scene will mirror the club rugby scene where the AIL is nearly non-existent and it's all about the four provinces.
"It'll be a sad state of affairs if that happens in the GAA and I don't understand why the status quo has to remain. What are we going to lose by being exclusively club players and the county game becoming representative?"
Healy believes the "GAA's Brexit" is on their doorstep and feels talk of semi-professionalism must be nipped in the bud or irreversible damage will done to the Association.
GPA chief Paul Flynn recently mooted the possibility of some form of pay-for-play in the future but Healy despises such notions and believes players are ignoring the catastrophic long-term implications of such a move.
"If we start entertaining semi-professionalism, we'll lose everything that makes the GAA what it is: the love of place and being part of the community. We're slowly losing that," Healy said.
"The GAA seem to be fixated with making money rather than standing by their principles and we're well on the road to a sorrowful day.
"Semi-professionalism is like the GAA's Brexit and we're teetering on the edge of a cliff right now."
Healy added: "If someone asked the GAA president what the GAA is about, what would he say? Is it to promote Irish culture and games and to have strong community links? That's what it should be.
"Going semi-pro and making it even more elitist at the top is paying lip service to the values of the Association. The custodians of the GAA are going to have to press the nuclear button and do something about it because at the moment they're tippy-toeing around it and doing nothing."
Healy believes the benefits for such a system are tenfold for all the key stakeholders - namely players, county boards and fans.
"It levels the playing field across the board because the county game is like an arms race with astronomical money spent on coaches and preparation to try and turn teams into All-Ireland contenders," he outlines.
"What will happen is the counties who are able to coach their coaches in the clubs and have a high level of coaching going on at grassroots, they're the ones that will be strong, not those with the deepest pockets.
"The financial pressure on county boards to pay for county teams is crazy. How many millions are spent on preparing county teams? Imagine an average of €10,000 spent preparing each county player going into every club instead.
"Imagine how many players you could get playing at a young age and keep them at it, what you could do in schools, what you could do socially and make your club a part of your community once again.
"I don't get why we have this obsession with preparation of county teams.
"Everyone should just be with their club all the time, that's the way it was 40 years ago and supporters still went to watch their county.
"The whole focus of the GAA is so backwards," Healy adds. "TV companies will still pay for the games because there's still such interest in it, they don't care whether lads are training the whole year round together or not.
"As well as that, how many players nowadays are saying, 'Ah the commitment's not worth it, I'm a bit busy with the county'? If you only have to train with the county a couple of times the week of a game, no one will turn it down.
"It would be an honour again to be called into the county squad like it should be and lads would take your hand off for an invitation. Lads in some counties are nearly hoping they don't get the call these days because of what it entails."
D
espite his many issues with how the GAA go about their business, the 32-year-old has no intention of letting his latest injury, or his work as a teacher in London, finish his Laois career. He plans on returning for the O'Moore men in 2020.
Whether it's football or hurling, that remains to be seen, but there's plenty of life in him yet.
"As bad and all as it is and as much giving out as I do, I do want to go back with Laois next year, sure I love it," Healy says.
Fair play to the two lads, but no ones listening now. No one listened a few years ago when the warnings were there. Dessie Farrell and his merry band of pricks have run roughshod over the association and no one cried halt. Now we have Horan shiteing on in Croke Park whitewashing the millions landed into Dublin. It happened on our watch.
Completely agree. The example of rugby and the AIL is very pertinent. The club game in this county (and I assume it's the same in others) is a shadow of what it was before professionalism came in, despite the massive 'popularity'.
Agree with Don. It's gone too far. What Dublin are doing in particular can in no way be replicated in the like of Laois. We're way too many rungs down the ladder to care about. The GAA, in typical firefighter mode, start pumping money into what they believe are the two nearest challengers in Leinster in the hope that they can "raise standards" or hopefully give Dublin some sort of game. The whole thing is a sham. The GAA have completely lost sight of what they're about and have inadvertently promoted professionalism.

Couldn't agree more more. As for the club game and player - the gaa dont care about them.
Club football is a wasteland. I disagree wholeheartedly with the system we have in Laois, because it lends itself to absolutely nothing. It's of no real relevance and it doesn't make players better. But it might just be the most player friendly system in counties who are going nowhere. It at least allows you to play an "amateur" sport in an enjoyable, hassle free way. I am grateful for the sacrifice and effort that our county players put in, but I wouldn't do it myself. Give me 2/3 months in America any day of the week

It's fair stupid out of the Leinster Express to interview him about last Sunday.
Now, John Horan is a president who in not afraid to protect the interests of his own county, Dublin.
I wasn't a fan of the Sky Deal which will be the legacy of his presidency, but it's not fair to say O'Neill did nothing for Laois, sure where do ye think we got the money to buy the land for the Centre of Excellence? Central Council of the GAA bought that for us during his tenure. It saved us millions. We wouldn't have that facility if it wasn't for him.
This is great! https://www.laoistoday.ie/2019/08/16/laois-hurler-to-be-part-of-sunday-game-panel-after-all-ireland-final/
"A Laois hurler is set to appear on prime time television as part of the Sunday Game panel this weekend after the All-Ireland Final between Tipperary and Kilkenny.
Laois goalkeeper Enda Rowland will be joining Des Cahill, Brendan Cummins, Derek McGrath, Jackie Tyrrell, Ursula Jacob, Cyril Farrell and Graham Mulcahy on Sunday night at 9.30pm."
Wow, from not a whisper about Laois during the entire Joe McDonagh run (until the Final) to having a Laoisman as part of the discussion panel. The Sunday Game must be finally getting a clue.
