General discussion / The Good American in Haiti
January 25, 2010, 07:39:47 PM
listening to the radio this morning with irish aid workers saying how nothing with be getting thro or working in Haiti without the US (both military and civilians) i was reminded of john o shea of goal asking people NOT to donate to the hurricane Katrina humanitarian fund in the new orleans area. i remember thinking 'what a bollix' i wonder would he say that now? america like the rest of the world has the good the bad and the ugly but i think more than other countries its gets bad press and little praise for the good it does. .

a record even beyond the famed 4 in a row team kerrys win on sunday puts them in their 6th all ireland in a row. this matches the record held by wexford and dublin. the question now is can kerry make the record their own next year by reaching 7 finals in a row?

the rest of the country may consider it a bore but in the home of football it'll be greeted with equal amounts of glee and dread. for kerry to lose an all ireland to cork would be cathastrophic but to beat them would be the ultimate. definately the two best teams left standing this year. cork will deserve their favourites tag, theyre a hardened team at this stage and have had some great performances this year against kerry, donegal and tyrone. but as we know only too well anything can happen in football. . .

tyrone have a hard road ahead of them if their to achieve their dream of back to back all irelands and be in contention for team of the decade. if they overcome kildare they could yet have to beat cork in the semi final and maybe face kerry in the final. thats a tough ask but back to backs aint easy

Loach accuses Ahern of hijacking premiere

Former taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his brother Maurice present a jersey to Eric Cantona on Tuesday.

RONAN McGREEVY

FILM DIRECTOR Ken Loach has accused former taoiseach Bertie Ahern of trying to hijack the premiere of a film starring Eric Cantona.

Loach said he was "disgusted by the cheap interventions" of Mr Ahern, who turned up at the premiere of Looking for Eric on Tuesday evening at the Light House cinema in Dublin's Smithfield.

Mr Ahern appeared with his brother Maurice, who is standing for Fianna Fáil in the Dublin Central byelection.

Just before the premiere started, the Ahern brothers presented Cantona with a No 7 Dublin shirt with the legendary former Manchester United footballer's name on the back. The brothers then left before the film started.

Loach said Cantona had "not a clue" who Bertie Ahern was, although Mr Ahern, a life-long Manchester United fan, said he met the Frenchman "a good few times" in the players' lounge at Old Trafford.

"He [Bertie Ahern] tried to take advantage of the fact that Eric would not know who he was meeting and yet he managed to get a photograph of his brother so his brother could bask in the reflected glory of Eric Cantona. I just thought it was cheap and I hope that people saw through it," Loach told The Irish Times .

"It made us irritated that this was just a political operator trying to hijack someone who was famous and well-respected for his own ends. It just demeans him, really, and his brother."

Loach won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes film festival for his Irish civil war film The Wind that Shakes the Barley in 2006. A well-known socialist, he said he would "not endorse any candidate like that".

In an interview with Newstalk's Tom Dunne, Loach later described Mr Ahern as a "rather dodgy right-wing politician".

Screenwriter Paul Laverty, who wrote Looking for Eric, raised a laugh after the premiere when he told the assembled audience that a line which he had to leave out of the movie was appropriate for Mr Ahern's behaviour. "The higher the money climbs, the more you can see its arse."

A spokesman for Mr Ahern said the row was "silly" as Mr Ahern and his guests had been invited to the movie by the production company.

"He decided to take his brother Maurice as a guest. As a note of kindness, and to appreciate that Eric was over in Ireland and that he was such a great servant for Manchester United, we got a Dublin jersey with his name on it to present to him. It was a nice gesture and most people involved would see it that way," the spokesman said.

"Under no circumstances did we try to hijack the film. Bertie is a great fan of Ken Loach, especially of The Wind that Shakes the Barley ."

Loach said that if Bertie Ahern was such a big Eric Cantona fan he would have stayed to see the film, but the former taoiseach's spokesman said the brothers had to go canvassing with the byelection imminent.

"He's looking forward to seeing the film over the next few weeks when the election's over," the spokesman added.

he raped a 14 year old, got her pregnant, killed her, put her body in a sleeping bag and got his daughter to help him dump her in a river and doesnt get murder but manslaughter ??? I havent followed it closely as i didnt want to get sick reading it but Ronald McManus got convicted of manslaughter yesterday. go figure that out

as for the thing that raped the 86 year old apparently he also raped the 13 year old in the infamous 'c' case a few years back and was out of jail. go figure

the legal system in this country is more focked up than the economy

GAA Discussion / Indoor Gaelic Football
April 30, 2009, 09:04:09 PM
In light of new gaa president Christy Cooneys highlighting the need for the gaa to grow in urban areas and as I said on another thread I have played more indoor soccer than gaa anyone got any ideas of how gaelic football could be played indoor? It would have to be played in your typical indoor hall that's used for soccer or basketball. Why bother? Anyone who has played indoor soccer or basketball will know how good the games are so why wouldn't a gaelic football game that lets face it comprises both of them not be good? It would be simple to organise and I've often wanted to pick up the ball during indoor soccer and give it a lash! Obliviously its not gaelic football in the same way that indoor soccer isn't the same as soccer. There are countless clubs around the country with suitable halls and if an indoor All Ireland blitz was set up there would be no shortage of club teams willing to enter. My idea would be

1)   5 a side
2)   You can carry the ball like basketball but must bounce it on a run
3)   You can kick the ball off the hands but not over head height (6 feet)
4)   you can punch the ball at any height
5)   You can play it on the ground like indoor soccer
6)   Scores are goals only with 2 upright bars only (lines) 4 feet apart 20 feet high, no crossbar (like afl posts (shut up micky harte))
7)   Scores can be from punches or kicks

Any other ideas?? would it/wouldnt it work?
