Hurt was great in The Field. The sandwiches scene was brilliant. But for me, I'll always associate with him, one line... "Well said, well said, well said. You're The Bull, you're The Bull, you're The Bull!"

He loved ireland and felt irish. He wad gutted when he couldnt find any close links to the country on who do you think you are. His voice was great and featured in countless ads. He will be missed.

Not really. Harris, for whom subtly was anathema, butchered every scene he was in by chewing all round him. Ray McAnally (with Donal McCann, probably the best male actors Ireland has ever produced) was an infinitely better Bull McCabe. The film was largely unworthy of Hurt's abilities. The Elephant Man was maybe his best onscreen performance.

What a brutal disease. I can't imagine Fernando Ricksen has much longer either.

Quite scary when you saw what and absolute beast he was in his prime and how motor neurone disease impacts upon people.

Loved him as a player, RIP Joost.

Never heard of him but watched an interview with him just now. Very sad.

I had a relative who had it, but passed away suddenly before it really got a grip. Looking back, it was better for them because they were going to go through hell.

There's a lot to be said for a trip to a Swiss clinic though.

Just awful

So sad. If you were trying to clone a rugby player he would have been high on the list. Up there with Gareth Edwards as one of the best  2 no. 9s I've seen. Brilliant player.
