He's just getting old. They tell me that's what happens as you get old. The human psyche seems to be wired to value the culture of its relative youth and dismiss anything else.

There was just as much shite (in percentage terms) published before Dan Brown was ever heard of as there is today. In absolute terms, there's more shite today because there's more everything because there are more people and therefore more stuff being produced and most of all there are more media to carry their output. And I'm sure too there's just about the same proportion of new good stuff in new genres being produced as there always was but most people over forty seven who would consider themselves interested in culture probably just don't understand it.

For instance, I'm just old enough to think The League Of Gentlemen is absolute manure. But I'm probably wrong. Stuart Lee and I are both right about Robert Lindsay-type stuff, though. That's probably because true shite stays shite forever.
