Was always going to be the outcome unfortunately.
Anyone able to think of suitable or potential replacements? I would definitely favor another outsider.
David Herity?
Henry Shefflin? Why not if Mickey Harte is gone to Louth.
Ken/Derek McGrath?
Ciaran Carey?
TJ Ryan?
This is the caliber we should be aiming for - and the next appointment will tell a lot about what the county board think of Laois hurling. I only hope if one of the above is approached he doesn't ring Eddie for advice.

Would happily subscribe to fund the hurling team - but i would not send my money to the county board, no way. I think there-in lies the issue that a lot of people have.
The county board is holding Laois hurling back - I am willing to pledge money to the team(s) but i wont because i dont trust the county board.
Just one small example.

IMO next weeks meeting  is for one thing and one thing only , so the lads on the CB get their pound of flesh .No matter what the public think the CB will not give Brennan the extra year.

It just shows one thing, the CB have an open door to push to do the right thing and say to Brennan yes you shouldnt have said that about us and more fool us for making you think that but let's build on the last 2 years and finally make Laois hurling progress at a national level.

Just a pity they wont push that open door, they will revert to type because they are more important than the players who committed,  more important than laois supporters sitting in Croke Park on all Ireland 1/4 final day going toe to toe with Tipp who thought they would never see the day and far more important than Laois hurling succeeding.

Is it any wonder players/supporters give up .

That's it in a nutshell, well summed up.

Lets be honest the county board have spent the last couple of days deciding what to do next in this situation to not make themselves look bad - they will not have given a thought to what was said or how to improve Laois hurling/football.
What Brennan said was 100% true and everyone knows it. Leaked accidentally my eye - Brennan was stitched up for publicity and personal gain. Im sure it was no surprise to any genuine Laois supporters - i didn't bat an eyelid when i heard it anyway. Was hardly breaking news.
I dont subscribe to the notion that the county board shouldn't be criticized because they "volunteer" - thats boll*cks. Volunteers or not they are responsible for the running of Laois GAA and if they are doing a bad job why shouldn't they be held accountable and criticized? Woops we made a mess of another generation of hurlers but its ok we are volunteers, dont worry we will have another group come along in a few years. Look at our environmentally friendly lights though.
I dont see any change coming from this - If men like Sugrue and Cheddar walked away that tells us everything we need to know.
Brennan will walk shortly, Quirke not far behind i would imagine and the cycle will start all over again.

In 10 years time -
Remember the hurling team we had in 2019. We had some great days following them. Twice in Croke park that summer, TWICE! Laois hurlers in Croker. Knocked Dublin out on a magical day in Portlaoise. We were the talk of the country. On the news, in the papers. Ambitious panel and a good young manager. Rowland was robbed of an All Star, John Lennon was sweeper not a singer.
What ever happened them afterwards? County board made a balls of it, had no plan to back it up, no ideas to sustain success, wouldn't support the manager and eventually he walked as they had no ambition.

No Niall Rigney Leixlad? Almost completely aligned otherwise. However, I think the current crop will eclipse many of the lads on the list when they have enough service under their belts. Especially the likes of Aaron Dunphy, Mark Kavanagh, Ryan Mullaney, Podge Delaney, Lee Cleere, Jack Kelly and John Lennon.

For what it is worth:

Rowland

John A
Campion
Healy

Joe Fitz
Paul Cuddy
Rigney

Purcell
Young

Cha
Zane
Hyland

Roddy King
Liam Tynan
Damien Culliton

Not for me, probably is next in line. Agree that in 4/5 years we will see (hopefully) more of the current crop on the team.

On a side note - who would you consider our best hurler from that period?

Im young enough - but for me Joe fitz the best i have ever seen hurl with Laois. He would have been a superstar if he was a kilkenny/Tipp man. Always did it with R/E too which i admire.

O Loughlin

Ian Fitz

Couldn't leave anyone of full back line out so Healy at 3
Always liked Ian Fitz, when in full flow he was some player (leinster final 03 for example)

Wasnt at the game so cant comment on how it went - but as a neutral  delighted for Roddy to get winning goal. Fair play to him he showed real class the last 12 months and after scoring the goal. What goes around comes around.

I think of all the media, articles and podcasts this one is my fav! Who'd have believed we would be ranked one place behind Kilkenny in hurling and have them playing a curtain raiser to us in Croke Park!  ;D
What a great few days to be a Laois hurling fan and roll on Sunday! 8) 8)

Ranking the last 6 hurling counties standing
When the final whistle blew in O'Moore Park on Sunday the scenes were akin to Jones Road in September.

Laois had pulled off the biggest shock of the year, dumping Dublin out of the championship and securing their spot in the All-Ireland quarter final against Tipperary.

Cork were also in action, they racked up 1-40 against Westmeath in their preliminary quarter-final.

As the dust settles on another weekend of hurling it's time to rank the remaining six counties.

1. Limerick

John Kiely's side are still out in front in the race for the Liam MacCarthy. Their impressive display against Tipperary in the Munster final gives them an invincible tag.

It was expected they might struggle to deal with the target on their backs but it certainly doesn't appear to weigh heavy.

Their defence has been particularly impressive and John Kiely will undoubtedly be happy with the way they contained Tipperary's sharp shooters.

2. Tipperary

Despite Tipperary losing to Limerick they haven't gone away.

Their resurrection under Liam Sheedy is still on track however the injuries to Bonner Maher and Cathal Barrett will be cause for concern.

They will face Laois on Sunday who are on a three-week run of games so Tipperary will look to exploit that tiredness in the wide open spaces of Croke Park.

3. Wexford

How the Leinster teams will fare against their Munster counterparts is still up for discussion but Davy Fitzgerald's side are the only remaining unbeaten Tier 1 team left.

They look very comfortable tactically under Fitzgerald's watchful eye and have a solid defence and attack.

Their form is peaking at the right time.

4. Cork

Cork remain the hardest to figure out and even after their demolition of Westmeath it's hard to know how consistent they will be in the latter stages of the championship.

Back to back semi-final appearances show they are capable of getting to the top table but can they deliver the ultimate prize?.

Patrick Horgan, Alan Cadogan and Shane Kingston scored 20 points between them against Westmeath.

5. Kilkenny

Kilkenny are not the force they once were but are still a force to be reckoned with.

They haven't won the All-Ireland since 2015 and the Leinster final was their third game in-a-row without a win.

Their injured players have returned to fitness but Cody will be hoping a return to form follows.

6. Laois

Laois surprised everyone when they defeated Dublin in the All-Ireland hurling preliminary quarter-finals. Next up is Tipperary who will be wounded after their loss to Limerick.

It will be a third came on the trot for Eddie Brennan's side, although they looked fresh against Dublin meeting Tipperary in Croke Park will be an entirely different prospect than the Dubs.

After Sunday's victory Laois manager Eddie Brennan commended his side.

"They could have been forgiven for going through the motions this week, and saying we're going to enjoy the summer, but they really tucked into it.

"Today we were absolutely brilliant in the execution.

"As the year went on, the skill and the heart grew in them. They're the things that stand to a team when you're in a battle, and your back is to the wall.

"It was their spirit today."

Well done to Laois finished league section unbeaten and getting a few lads a run which will benefit in long run no doubt. Im not familiar enough with Westmeath - did they do the same does anyone know?
Really looking forward to Croke Park - the only time i seen Laois hurl there (minor final aside a few years ago) was Wexford in 2005. I remember going in hope that year after beating Dublin handily in Nowlan park (I think?!) Should be a great occasion with Wexford v KK on afterwards (strange having the curtain raiser on second!!) My only hope now is fixtures fall my way for club championship - sadly the county i live in now have no regard for Laois playing in Croke park on Sunday 30th and there is a round of hurling championship scheduled that weekend.  :-[

I have to admit i didn't feel sorry for Offaly going down. You make your own bed - they wouldn't feel sorry for us. Its a sad sight Offaly in tier 3 however. My only hope and perhaps in one way i was hoping they would get relegated is maybe it might provoke the GAA to act not just with Offaly but to all teams of that level now (Laois, Antrim, Westmeath Carlow ect) and set up a strategic plan and proper funding and it might benefit us in the long run. Maybe thats wishful thinking however. Or maybe Offaly will get all the funding and over take us again and il regret seeing them relegated in the first place!!
