Title: Underdogs- Tasty
Post by: Under Lights on September 07, 2018, 09:30:46 AM
Anyone watch Underdogs on TG4 last night- there is a catch up on the website.

Thought Paul Galvin came accross real well- I think he imagines himself as a Roy Keane type figure lol.

Anyone know anyone on the panel? Don't see anything listing players online but maybe we can compile it here:

Ronan O'Neill- Derrytresk- Tyrone
Conor McKenna- Eire Og- Antrim
Anthony Durney-Moorefield- Kildare

Hasn't been revealed yet, but for the year that is in it I would hope its Kildare in Newbridge.

Was absolutely cringe McKenna's woman saying she didn't know the GAA existed and the mentioning of he possibly moving to a bigger club like he was playing soccer.

Too many sob stories for me. Pure X Factor. "i stopped eating cakes/keep getting sent off/my puppy took sick" etc.

Didn't see any football in the 1st episode at all. Just lads running about

Hopefully it improves

LOL at the goalie who came in and said - I am the underdog!  Silke & Galvin were totally taken aback that they couldn't tell him first time that he was cut.  Which is surprising as its the easiest part of any managers job

Watched the first episodes there, some lads from my own county on it

Ronan O'Neill of Derrytresk
Ryan Trainor of Dungannon
Ruiri Cunningham of Clonmore (sure it's Dungannon parish ;))

Seems like a decent bundle of lads they have so far, the army camp wouldn't have been for myself either but its true the lad from Sligo near blew it with his antics - pity they don't really show too much football on it, maybe that'll change with later episodes, would like to hear how the management actually tell the lads how to go out saying as they've basically pulled them all together.

Galvin comes across quite well on it, indeed so to Valerie Mulcahey and Ray Silke. Agree with some of the X-Factor like build up, not for me - but that's what engages audiences these days.

Fair play to the men who applied, takes some heart to go for it.

Enjoyed it, but once again gaelic football is more about turning out a team of commandoes rather than footballers; physical fitness++, nothing about the actual skills. This is where we are going wrong

I haven't watched any of this but I think I know the Sligo lad involved and it wouldn't surprise me at all that he'd be up to something!

I've only watched the army camp episode but I thought Silke came across as a bullshitter, full of clichés. Overall a decent enough watch though

They're not good are they? I'd imagine Dublin will play their O'Byrne cup team with a few established players thrown on?

Looking forward to the pre game interview with Jim Gavin.

2-8 to 0-2 to the Dubs at half time. No energy or movement in that underdogs side its like the shite has been run out of them.

One of the Underdogs backs looked completely gassed after 15 minutes.

The Underdogs are making it very easy for the Dublin defence with some shocking attempts at putting the ball into the forwards. Horror show stuff.

The Dublin no 15 looks a real prospect.

The ladies finals is it. The days of our men getting hammered are long gone. I can't remember a hammering in the last decade.

I was a bit early alright on the underdogs. The 1st ten minutes they held their own though.

a shower of eejits, managed by a bigger shower of eejits against a 2nd/3rd string of a 4 in a row side, it's was always going to be shooting fish in a barrel for dublin, at most they  should have been playing a div 3 side

Jesus them underdogs were brutal last night. No wonder none of them have played county football. Most Senior club teams in ulster woukd beat them and I would go as far as saying every intermediate championship winning team in ulster would beat them.

Comfortably. The only guy I was familiar with has never been able to make his club team. And they are merely a middle of the road senior team in Westmeath. They clearly didn't get the quality of applicants they were hoping for.

UCD with a load of lads that didn't play senior college football before also hammered that underdogs side. Some decent individuals but as a team they were worse than useless on and off the field last night.

People watched it because it was Dublin. If it had have been any other team no one would have bother to tune in.
I hadn't followed the series but tuned in to watch the game because of Dublin.
Underdogs were very poor. Lacked any real ability, couldn't execute the basics and as a result got the tanking they deserved.

When it was going the way it was going could Dublin not have pulled up a bit to make it seem like half a spectacle??

I'll only be tuning in for the game, what date is it due on? i suppose Mayo will line out with their junior team along with few senior subs?

Interesting to see Israel Illunga on the 30 man panel. He's played Under age with Westmeath and maybe O Byrne Cup.
He's hardly far off  the full Senior panel..

He's a long way off it at this stage I'd say. Stood out a mile at underage due to his physicality.

Maybe it's the current climate of Inter-county football. But this seems a hard sell. Playing a slapped together inter-county team as the finale looks cheesy.

Won't be tuning in!

Double that I'd say. There is a Mayo legends game as the curtain raiser which will bring in a crowd.

That's a decent crowd - I watched it on tv last year but can't remember what sort of crowd was in PP.

Great idea to have a Legend's Game before it - gets the crowd in early.  Hopefully weather will hold up.

Gary Boylan showing well, bar the penalty miss. I remember watching him in 2014 playing with Mayo minors. He's been playing soccer the last few years with Sligo Rvrs and Cork City. He left Cork in July, so obviously available to Mayo now

Awful scutter. Some of the wides and goal misses are shocking. A lad with a pair of wellies on would do better.

A group of strangers from all over the country beaten by a county ''C'' county group of strangers team.

I might be in a minority but I enjoyed the series. Maybe playing a bigger county is not a great spectacle but it does give a few players a short time in the limelight.  For Mayo I am sure Boylan (?) was glad he could show what he could do. For the underdogs O'Sullivan of Kerry maybe got a chance to show that he could still play inter county if Kerry can forgive his earlier error. From an Armagh point of view it was good to see 3 players involved and Aron McKenna showed he can take a score. He has a tough task though trying to break into the Armagh full forward line.

Mayo 's C team would be better than many counties A team. Maybe if tier 2 keeps going the underdogs could be expanded to include players who haven't played Tier 1 championship- provincial excluded.

Apart from Fionn McDonagh,Brian Reape,Matthew Ruane,Stephen Coen,James McCormack has any of that Mayo team last night ever play a NFL or senior championship game for Mayo? I find it a bit odd that Mayo supporters elsewhere are taking up players and having the view they should be on the county panel next year after watching that exhibition/challenge match.

I like the concept of the underdogs. I'm not keen on the whole reality TV/X Factor sad stories that goes with it but can live with it.

Perhaps they should look at the level on competition or something however though or at least give them half a chance - maybe make it pre Xmas to try and even the playing field on a county that will only be back training 2/3 weeks at that stage.

Anything that gives lads a chance to try and aim for the top of the game should really be welcomed, some of the comments are fairly negative towards lads who want to try their best. I admire anyone for giving it a good lash.

Hardly a "C" team when you've 1/5 of the regular starting team.

Yeah, it's not bad.  I always watch it.  No harm done in it and, as you say, fair play for the lads committing to it.

I used to watch it regularly but since the producers have turned it into an x factor type show with all the back stories etc.
There is enough of that shite on the tv.

If they would concentrate on the football/training/tactics part of it I feel it would be watchable again

Nice Donal Reid article in this week's Democrat about a lad from Castlederg (Gallen) who appeared on Underdogs this season. His father is from Reid's club, Red Hughs.
