Title: The Masters - 2024
Post by: lurganblue on April 09, 2024, 10:41:00 AM
The best major (IMO) is almost underway again. Who are the fancies?

Is this finally the time for Rory to add the green jacket to his collection?

I'll go for Rahm back to back. Though would love to see Rory win it.

I see Stephen Watson has got his annual week away to Augusta from BBC NI anyway.

There is a guy every year who does analysis the rules out most of the field bar 15 ish. I thought I had him saved but can't find it now. Can anyone recall?

Ludvig Aberg probably gets ruled out by his analysis but might be a shout. I thought he would be a bigger price.

My OH flies out on Thurs to attend Saturday and Sunday.

He won't like that longlist that doesn't include either Rory or Shane, but as long as at least one makes the cut, he'll be OK.

Could be McIlroys year, he has to win one eventually surely?
Hopefully Shane does well also.

McIlroy just always seems to have 1 horrible round in him at this course over 4 days.

He needs to ensure that horrible round doesn't kill his weekend, he is usually excellent on the Sunday but firing from too far back. Limit the damage on the bad round and put himself in contention and he is as dangerous a competitor as there is in in the field.

The masters should be perfect for Mcilroy who hits the ball high and long, unfortunately his wedge play and putting in recent yrs has been poor.

Frustrating from Rory played well in difficult conditions but could easily be on about -4, too many sloppy shots on the back 9. Fitzpatrick is another one who managed to turn a great round into something quite ordinary

16 and 17 were the holes that could have turned it from an ok start to a good start. He has to be making those putts on 16 and then bogey on 17 rubbed salt in the wounds. Level par for the Par 5s probably wasn't in the plan either. At least he's not out of it but Scheffler looks very good.

Tiger going along ok though 23 holes today could take its toll.

Good round from McIlroy. Wasn't at it on the first 6 holes, whether it was mental or swing but kept himself in it with some great patient play. That's probably the worst score he could have shot from round where he didn't bring his A game.

Scheffler is the opposite, played great and got lots of lucky bounces. On the 13th he should have been in the water and staring at bogey rather than simple up and down for birdie, but you need luck to win too. McIlroy was inches from a tap in birdie on 13 rather than a tricky downhill putt, that could have easily been a 2 shot swing. DeChambeau similarly blessed with luck. The 17th for McIlroy on another day the drive isn't as penal on the swing and the approach rolls into the bunker (what he was trying to do) rather than out the back, so he has a chance of getting up and down.

Bar the 16th missed opportunity, I think the rest was ok. He could have been 4 under with a few breaks (13, 16 and 17 cost him) without being anywhere as at the level of the 2 leaders. He's still well in this.

Certainly not the disaster round that he can sometimes have. If he does his usual and has a very low scoring round then he will certainly be well in the mix.

Scheffler was so impressive last night. He's so steady and very rarely makes a wrong decision it's hard to see him making too many mistakes.

Bryson was brilliant too apparently he has newly engineered clubs more forgiving for his game that only got approved at the start of the week. They seem to be working.

McIlroy will need a 5/6 under to get into contention and possibly need Scottie to have a mare on the greens!

One mistake on Augusta can lead to a big number and a big swing. He doesn't need to shoot the lights out today, just keep in touch as plenty up players up there.

Scheffler got the best out that round last night and despite Scheffler's form for 2 years, he's only picked up one major. I wouldn't be giving it to him just yet.

Scheffler be hard to beat with his levels of consistency, but if McIlroy can hang in he is more likely to have epic round, if he can remain close enough. Last few he has made a charge on the Sunday but has been too far back.

Shane going to need to pick something up in his second round.

Homa the danger man. He's completely on it and if play hadn't stopped last night I'd say he'd be 6 under.

Awful rubbish. He has no business being anywhere near the water on 11 it's as if he has never played the course before. Too many missed short putts and too many   brain farts. Will probably do the usual and end up with a couple of good rounds to finish in the top 5 after he has played himself out of contention. Defo needs a proper caddy to sort his head out.

Got a complete schooling from Scheffler on course management. That trip to see Butch in Vegas doesn't appear to have improved much.

His course management has always been atrocious. I remember Jay Haas calling it yrs ago and Rory couldn't handle his criticism. That was way back when he had JP on the bag who was also just a yes man. Funnily enough one of the few times he really needed to go for it was that last round at st Andrews a couple of yrs back and for whatever reason didn't.

I actually turned it off with a couple of holes to go. Scheffler was never going to lose that and the chasing pack were mostly crumbling.

That swing follow through of scheffler's is mad. It looks to be an injury waiting to happen.

Yeah its hard to beat a back 9 meltdown at one of the Majors. Never looked likely from Scheffler.

All the other contenders had a double, Morikawa had 2 of them. What looked like a very close contest as the last group were  around 7/8 became a procession. No pressure on Scheffler. He seems like a good guy so fair play to him
