Quote from: square_ball on June 02, 2024, 10:07:09 AMNot doubting his ability and he's still very young but god the English are going overboard with the hyping up of Jude Bellingham. Watched majority of Madrids QF, SF and final and felt he had no major impact in any of the 5 games. By the looks of it he has had a good season in La Liga which in fairness I don't watch a big pile of. The way the English are going on you'd think he was Ronaldo and Messi all mixed into the one player.
To be fair one of the team on TNT last night said he didn't really show up for a lot of the latter games in the UCL. It might actually have been Rio Ferdinand and it's not often he says anything insightful.

I've watched plenty of Madrid games this season, both domestic and European, and for the majority of the season he was outstanding. He won player of the year in la liga

Saying that, he has definitely slowed down this last month or more, hasn't had the same impact on games. Not sure if he is struggling with an injury (seen him stretching his calf from about the 60th minute), or if it's an age thing, you forget he is only 20

Quote from: SouthOfThe Bann on May 28, 2024, 11:07:35 AMA lot of negativity around the current championship format among the media in recent weeks.

I'm wondering would a open draw championship with a back door work?

Round 1 - Open Draw

Round 2 - 8 losers play each other in round two (losers round) and 8 winners play each other in round 2 (winners round).

Round 3 - The 4 winners from the winners round progress to the quarter finals whilst the 4 losers from the winners round play the 4 winners from the losers round. (Slightly confusing but bare with me)

Round 4 - Quarter Finals

See below how it might play out

Round 1
Derry 1-16 v 0-08 Westmeath
Armagh 2-09 v 0-11 Clare
Dublin 3-17 v 1-12 Cavan
Kerry 0-19 v 0-11 Monaghan
Mayo 0-18 v 0-07 Roscommon
Galway 2-19 v 0-04 Meath
Tyrone 0-13 v 0-10 Louth
Donegal 0-17 v 0-09 Cork

** 8 Winners play off and 8 losers play off

Round 2 - Losers round
Cavan 1-16 v 0-08 Westmeath
Monaghan 2-09 v 0-11 Clare
Roscommon 3-17 v 1-12 Meath
Cork 0-19 v 0-11 Louth

** Cavan Monaghan Roscommon and Cork progress to play the losers of the winners round

Round 2 - Winners round
Kerry 1-16 v 0-08 Dublin
Galway 2-09 v 0-11 Mayo
Donegal 3-17 v 1-12 Tyrone
Derry 0-19 v 0-11 Armagh

** Kerry Galway Donegal and Derry progress onto quarter finals.
** Dublin Mayo Tyrone and Armagh play off with Cavan Monaghan Roscommon and Cork in round of 12.

Round 3
Dublin 1-16 v 0-08 Cavan
Cork 2-09 v 0-11 Tyrone
Armagh 3-17 v 1-12 Roscommon
Mayo 0-19 v 0-11 Monaghan

** Dublin Cork Armagh and Mayo progress to quarter finals

Round 4 Quarter Finals
Kerry 3-17 v 1-12 Armagh
Mayo 0-19 v 0-11 Derry
Dublin 0-14 v 0-11 Galway
Donegal 0-17 v 0-11 Cork

Round 5 Semi Finals
Mayo 3-17 v 1-12 Kerry
Donegal 0-17 v 0-11 Dublin

Round 6 Final
Donegal 0-18 v 0-17 Mayo (AET)

I think it this is a decent system where everyone has a second chance but no dead rubbers or meaningless games and every game means something.

Not bad at all,  reduction in games be an issue though for the GAA. Would have to increase prices further to compensate.

A trade off that could be accepted. Think I'd be happy to pay a bit more if I knew I wouldnt be attending as many matches, and the matches I am attending have more jeopardy

Quote from: RedHand88 on May 17, 2024, 10:21:34 AMIt's June in 2 weeks ffs. Why was it even left this late to begin with? Derry have their 6th found of club fixtures this weekend and have played more county games than us this year!
Don't be ridiculous. The May start has been the best thing Tyrone GAA have done in the last decade. The season has ran brilliantly the last two years with the Friday games and the May start date. League played through the best months of the year. Unfortunate change for Senior clubs having to wait an extra week this year but give me the current structure and calendar over a March/April start and lengthy gaps throughout the season.

Aye agree on the Friday nights, but last year club football went on to October, with training from January. So it's still taking up the most of the year.

No need to be training from January

Quote from: Armagh18 on May 17, 2024, 12:35:20 AMArmagh club leagues round 13 is 26th July and round 14 (final round) is 2nd August. Championship will be towards end of August. What are club players doing from March until Tyrone are out apart from playing 5 league games?
I see they had some Jim Devlin cup competition running for seniors some slog for non county players to keep them interested without any meaningful games to do late in year.

Yeah Jim Devlin cup so teams either got 1, 2 or 3 games in that. I don't think many entered the Ulster league either. I'm sure the players have been in the gym since Christmas and then whenever pitch sessions started plus friendlies etc. I see last night the league has been put back a week so now starting on 31st May. It would have been a long slog to the start of the league.

No need to be starting training so early then when league doesn't begin until mid/end of May

Quote from: Look-Up! on May 09, 2024, 09:13:12 AMJoselu is something else though. Doesn't matter if it's the Bernabeu or Stoke on a wet windy night, the man delivers!!!

More like he couldn't do it on a wet windy night in Stoke. Crazy that 2 failed former Stoke strikers were leading the line at the end of a Champions League Semi Final.
Who's the other one?

Always great to see stories like this. Only got his first Spain cap last year too at 32. Unbelievable night for him and his family.

And county boards aping this trying to get county players more games with their clubs

Championship structures at intercounty and club level are a bit of a mess

Is the all-star team still decided by trial matches?

Just seen the team posted there and no players from Omagh, Dungannon or Donaghmore
